2009-10 Feature Stories: A Closer Look Inside Binghamton Athletics

Twelve years ago, Michelle Burrell went of to college after graduating from nearby Owego Free Academy. She was an all-state shortstop in softball in high school and was recruited to play at the University of Maryland. Since then, she has tremendous success both as a player and coach. On June 16, she returned to her hometown to become the new head softball coach at Binghamton University.


On the Rise

Since 2005, few Binghamton athletic programs have improved as much as men's cross country. In the past four years, it has gone from being a struggling program to a legitimate conference contender.

On Masters Sunday, golfer Katz delivers his own magic with record 66

Junior Jake Katz is enjoying another outstanding golf season as the Bearcats' No. 1 man. Katz has six top-10 finishes and five runnerup honors in 2009-10. At the Lafayette Invitational on April 11, he made history by shooting a 6-under-par 66 at the Center Valley Golf Club. That round is the lowest in school history. Katz, a chemistry major with a 3.42 GPA, shared insight into that record-round as well as his background and future goals.

Four years ago, Jeff Rurey joined the men's lacrosse team as a walk on. Today, he is a team captain. As he has progressed on the field, he has kept his academics as a key priority.

Making His Mark

Binghamton university runner Chris Gaube. He was an integral member of the Bearcats' 2009 America East Cross Country Championship Team, but he has also had a significant influence as a student and in the community. Gaube will be busy this winter competing with the indoor track & field team, which finished second at last year's conference championship meet.

Long road back to the NCAAs for volleyball's Brianna Strong

Libero Brianna Strong experienced an America East Volleyball Championship and an NCAA First Round game against Penn State as an all-rookie hitter in 2005 as a freshman. Now four years later, Strong is back in the NCAAs as a fifth-year senior, in a new position and the lone remaining Bearcat from 2005, preparing to take on national powerhouse Penn State once again in the NCAA First Round.

Former BU men's soccer player starts third season in MISL

The 2009 Binghamton men's soccer campaign concluded last week but one of the Bearcats' alumni is just starting up his season. Ryan Pierce, a 2006 graduate, is beginning his third year with the Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).

Former BU women's basketball standout Shea Kenny runs in NYC Marathon

When a student-athlete graduates from Binghamton, they are sometimes hard pressed to find something to fill the void of competition. That has not been a problem, however, for Shea Kenny, a 2007 BU graduate and a two-year starting point guard for the women's basketball team. Two weeks ago, she took part in the New York City (NYC) Marathon. She hopes it is the first of many such races that she enters.

Senior Jen McEachron and junior Erin Iman have split equal time during BU's record-breaking 2009 women's soccer season. While the two goalies have united in this unique and successful strategy, each has forged her own successful path off the soccer field.

Family Ties

Since 2005, the Binghamton men’s soccer team and the Yusuf family have been an integral part of each other’s lives. Ibrahim Yusuf was with the Bearcats from 2005-06. Current junior back Yusuf Yusuf joined the squad the following year. The Bearcats have always been a close-knit team. The same can also be said, however, of the Yusufs.
