Publicizing a Prospective Student-Athletes Visit to Campus
Prospective student-athletes (PSAs) visit our campus all the time, for a variety of reasons. Some come on recruiting visits organized by our coaches, some come through a high school or club team program and some participate in on-campus programs being hosted by our Admissions Office. Whatever the occasion may be, please keep the following in mind:
It is not permissible for us to publicize that they are here on campus!
- It is not permissible for current student-athletes to tweet about an upcoming recruiting visit;
- If institutional staff members see students/fans/boosters holding up a sign at a game with a prospective student-athletes name, we’re required to take steps to stop the activity; and
- We cannot provide any form of public recognition to groups of PSAs (grades 9-12) who might be attending our on-campus contests as part of a “Club Day” in any sport.
Bylaw 13.10.5 Prospective Student-Athlete’s Visit: A member institution shall not publicize (or arrange for publicity of) a prospective student-athlete’s visit to the institution’s campus. Further, a prospective student-athlete may not participate in team activities that would make the public or media aware of the prospective student-athlete’s visit to the institution (e.g., running out of the tunnel with team, celebratory walks to or around the stadium/arena, on-field pregame celebrations).
