Missed Class Time for Practice Activities

Date Published: June 11, 2010

The committee determined that a student-athlete may not miss class at any time (e.g., regular academic term, mini term, summer term) for practice activities, except when a team is traveling to an away-from-home contest and the practice is in conjunction with the contest. [References: NCAA Bylaw (no class time missed for practice activities) and a staff interpretation (8/20/97, Item No. a), which has been archived]

And by the way, this interpretation still applies:

Missed Class Time for Practice Activities: Reviewed Bylaw (no class time missed for practice activities) and 1991 Convention Proposal No. 38-E (time limits for athletically related activities), which stipulates that Divisions I and II must impose restrictions related to missed class time; determined that a member institution may allow its student-athletes to miss a class for an on-campus practice prior to departing to an away-from-home contest, provided the practice activities take place on the day of departure.
