VESTAL, N.Y. –  Junior Shavonna Hinton of the women’s cross country team and freshman Shannon Knapp of the women’s lacrosse program attended the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum this past weekend in Providence, R.I.  They were part of a group of over 350 student-athletes and 125 athletic professionals from the Northeast Region that took part in the event.

Held this past Thursday-Sunday, the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum was designed for student-athletes to discuss key issues collectively and provide them with an opportunity to enhance personal awareness and leadership skills needed to positively impact their development at the campus and conference levels, as well as beyond the collegiate realm.

“As student athletes, we spend so much time on perfecting our skills as athletes and hardworking students but this leadership conference allows us to grow and develop our skills as leaders, role models and young adults,” Hinton said.

“I have been involved in lots of leadership activities throughout my high school career, and I look forward to continuing that role into college,” Knapp said. “The opportunity to network with other college athletes is a great experience.”

Throughout the Leadership Forum, representatives from NCAA member schools led small group discussions about a variety of topics such as: behavioral styles, branding, social media, decision-making, emotional intelligence and values.

The student-athletes also heard from several speakers including Chris Herren, former NBA player and founder of Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren and The Herren Project, about decision-making. They heard from Rayna DuBose, a former basketball student-athlete about facing adversity. Additionally, participants heard from keynote speaker Sam Davidson, President and Co-founder of Cool People Care, about leadership lessons that he learned at a young age.
