VESTAL, N.Y.— Binghamton head women’s basketball coach Nicole Scholl continued her support for the local Binghamton Humane Society when she presented a check for $650 prior to Binghamton’s game against Cornell on Nov. 14 at the Events Center.

Since the start of the 2009-10 season, Scholl has pledged $50 to the Humane Society for each Binghamton victory. The check for $650 represents the Bearcats’ 13 wins during the 2011-12 campaign. Since Scholl began her pledge, she has donated $2,150 to the local Humane Society.

For Scholl, her interest in working with pets goes back to her childhood. She grew up on a farm north of Fargo, North Dakota and had plenty of animals to be around during her youth. In May 2009, Scholl started volunteering with the Humane Society as her way to “give back.”

“At an early age I learned the joy and unconditional love that you can experience from having a cat or a dog,” she said. “I have always had a soft spot for them and when I saw what the staff at the shelter was doing to give back to the animals there, I was hooked. The best part about being involved is when I go there and find out that a dog or cat has gone to a permanent home.”

As Scholl continued to volunteer, she began to consider ways her program could help out the Humane Society.

“I met with the Humane Society and we talked about ways that we could possibly help as a program,” she said. “I love volunteering but I also thought it would be great for us to help get more information out to the community as well.”

The Humane Society is an independent, non-profit animal welfare organization. It receives no government funding and is dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and finding homes for companion animals. It serves the community by sheltering animals, finding them homes, investigating reports of animal cruelty, educating people of all ages and rescuing animals from threatening situations.
