VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman attack Bri Arthur was named America East Rookie of the Week after leading the Binghamton women’s lacrosse team to a pair of home wins last week, as announced by the league office Monday. Arthur has earned her second Rookie of the Week honor in the last three weeks and is the first player in program history to win two conference honors in the same season.
“Bri continues to raise the bar and display exemplary play on the field,” head coach Stephanie Allen said. “She continues to push herself daily and brings a tremendous amount of passion and fight to the field. We are proud of her achievements thus far and look forward to seeing her continued development.”
Arthur led the Bearcats to a pair of home victories over Niagara and St. Bonaventure to continue Binghamton’s best start (4-1) in school history. The Watertown, N.Y. native netted four goals in each contest including the game-winner versus Niagara. Arthur has recorded a hat trick in four of her five games in a Bearcat uniform.
Against Niagara, Arthur tallied a hat trick in the first nine minutes and scored all four of her goals in the first half to lead Binghamton to a 10-3 advantage. Binghamton went on to cruises to the 17-7 victory after scoring the second half’s first three goals. Versus St. Bonaventure, the first-year player netted a pair of goals in each half and handed out her second assist of the year to propel the Bearcats to a dominant 19-3 victory.
“The team has come out of the gates hard the last two games and we expect nothing to change for Cornell,” Allen continued. “Our focus right now is improving from game to game and playing cohesively. We are excited to take on Cornell - as the short distance brings an added rivalry and competitiveness to the Upstate New York battle.”
The standout freshman leads Binghamton with 18 goals and ranks 13th nationally in goals per game (3.60). Arthur ranks among the top five in the America East in goals per game and points per game (4.00).
Winners of four of its first five contests, Binghamton has continued its hot start and is off to the best start in program history. The Bearcats’ program record for wins in a season is five and Binghamton is one away from tying the mark with five more games before conference play begins.
Binghamton concludes a three-game homestand on Wednesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. when the Bearcats host Cornell. Binghamton then heads to Canisius on Saturday, March 17 at 1 p.m. for a meeting with the defending MAAC Champions.
