CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Bri Arthur was named the America East Rookie of the Week after leading Binghamton to a 20-6 season-opening victory over Howard, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon. Arthur helped the Bearcats win its first season-opener in program history.
“Bri has quickly acclimated to the Division I level of play,” head coach Stephanie Allen said. “She’s an absolute workhorse on the field and we are excited to see what the season will bring for her. This honor is very well deserved and we look forward to seeing her develop as the season progresses.”
Arthur highlighted Binghamton’s win over Howard scoring a game-high five goals in her first appearance in a Bearcat uniform. The five goals tied a Binghamton freshman mark for goals scored in a game set by Becky Green against Vermont in 2004. The Watertown, N.Y. native added an assist to her stat line for a total of six points, two shy of the single-game mark of eight set by Green in the same contest.
Binghamton raced out to an 11-3 lead behind Arthur’s four first-half goals. The first-year player recorded her first career hat trick with 3:14 remaining in the opening 30 minutes. With just under a minute to play in the first half, Arthur maneuvered through the Howard defense and notched her fourth goal of the day.
Behind the efforts of Arthur, Binghamton won its first season-opener in program history. The Bearcats were previously 0-12 in season-openers since the program was established in 2002. Binghamton and Howard, who competes in the Atlantic Sun, met for the first time ever Saturday.
Six Binghamton players have earned Rookie of the Week honors since the program was created in 2002. Arthur is the second BU players to earn the award in as many years. Last season, America East All-Rookie Team selection Erin McNulty garnered the honor after helping Binghamton halt a 14-game losing streak.
Binghamton turns its focus to a pair of Patriot League teams this week as the Bearcats travel to Bethlehem, Pa. Tuesday for a meeting with Lehigh before heading to Easton, Pa. on Saturday for a matchup with Lafayette.
