LOWELL, Mass.—After conceding to the poor weather in Lowell, Binghamton baseball (29-23) and Maine (37-21) will instead travel 90 minutes south to Kingston, R.I. and play the America East championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday on the campus of University of Rhode Island (Bill Beck Field).
The deciding game of the championship required a change in venues after unrelenting two-day rain made the conditions at LeLacheur Park unplayable. The Bearcats were at the ballpark at noon on Saturday and idled in the clubhouse for two hours while officials made the determination and scheduled an alternate site. After a flurry of phone calls to secure last-minute hotels and alter travel and meal plans, BU is now en route to “The Ocean State,” where they will get in a workout Saturday night and prepare for the winner-take-all game.
Maine forced the tournament’s seventh and deciding game with a 6-1 win over BU Friday night. The Bearcats had opened the championship with back-to-back wins, including a 10-2 win over the Black Bears. The teams, in essence, will play a rubber game to determine the conference champion and NCAA representative.
