VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball has been picked to finish third in the 2013 America East Preseason Coaches’ poll, the conference announced on Wednesday. The poll is based on votes submitted by the league’s six head coaches, who weren’t allowed to vote for their own teams.
Binghamton received 18 points in the voting, behind defending champion and preseason favorite Stony Brook (23) and 2012 runnerup Maine (19). Albany (13), Hartford (12) and UMBC (5) rounded out the rankings.
“I’m not a big fan of the polls ... especially all the preseason ones,” 21st-year head coach Tim Sinicki said. “Nobody knows our team like my staff and I do, and that is all that really matters to me. I like our team, I like it a lot. The makeup, the personnel, the chemistry ... but we have to continue to work hard and develop in the coming weeks and months, and if we do what I think we are capable of, then I believe we can be right in the mix of things come May.”
Binghamton returns 23 letterwinners from a team that won 23 games and went 13-9 in conference play last spring. That 2012 squad placed third in the America East standings and also placed third at the conference tournament, despite playing all 49 games off campus while the team’s new facility was being constructed.
Eight of nine players from the starting lineup return as well as three starting pitchers. Sinicki will have to replace two MLB draft picks (pitchers Mike Augliera and Lee Sosa) as well as one of the program’s all-time elite players (first baseman Dave Ciocchi).
Binghamton begins its 2013 season with a four-game set at James Madison on February 22-24 in Harrisonburg, Va. The team’s home opening series is slated for March 23-24 against Stony Brook.
Binghamton’s Preseason Baseball Media Day has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 20 at 3 p.m. in the Events Center Media Room.
