VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball was undone by the weather Wednesday afternoon at Cornell. The Bearcats led the Big Red 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when the rain took its toll on the pitcher’s mound and the teams were cleared from the field. After trying to wait out the rain and subsequent lightning for 45 minutes, officials canceled the game. No make-up will be played with both teams’ schedules already crowded.
Binghamton had one run in and the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the fifth when play was halted at 5:20 p.m. Three BU pitchers had combined for a no-hitter at that point.
The Bearcats scored two unearned runs in the second inning to jump ahead and they added the run in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk. None of the statistics will count.
After 80 consecutive games away from home dating back to the end of the 2011 season, BU is scheduled to make its 2013 home debut at the newly refurbished Bearcats Sports Complex this weekend when America East rival Albany comes to town. The Bearcats (14-11, 5-6 AE) and Great Danes will play a twinbill Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and then finish up the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
