VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball has seized all three America East weekly awards after a 4-0 week that ended with a series sweep of UMBC. Junior left fielder Jake Thomas was named Player of the Week, sophomore pitcher Jake Cryts took home Pitcher of the Week honors and freshman catcher Eddie Posavec earned Rookie of the Week honors. It’s the second time in as many seasons that BU has swept a set of weekly awards.
The announcement comes hours before the Bearcats (9-13) host Bucknell (16-12-1) in a non-conference tilt at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Thomas hit .438 (7-for-16) with two home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored in the four games. He drove in two runs and scored three in a non-conference win over NJIT and then went 6-for-8 in Sunday’s twinbill sweep of UMBC. Thomas twice visited the right field bullpen in Game 2, belting a three-run shot in fourth inning and adding a solo shot in sixth for his team-high and America East-best fourth home run of the season. In his first eight conference games he has a .714 slugging percentage and .438 on-base percentage. Thomas has three home runs and nine RBI in his last five games. Thomas leads the entire America East in home runs and slugging (.526) and is fourth with a team-high 16 RBI. It’s the second time Thomas has earned Player of the Week honors in his career (March 2, 2013).
Cryts tossed 10 scoreless innings in a pair of appearances last week, allowing just five hits while striking out nine. He threw three clean innings in a mid-week game against NJIT and then fired seven scoreless innings against UMBC. He allowed three hits and struck out five in a 7-3 win. In the process, Cryts lowered his season ERA to 3.21 in eight starts. He has a paltry 0.45 ERA in three America East starts (1 ER in 20 inn.), which ranks No. 1 in the conference. It’s the first Pitcher of the Week honors for Cryts, who was Rookie of the Week once last season (March 2, 2013).
Posavec hit .636 (7-for-11) with 6 RBI in the three-game sweep of UMBC. In addition he caught all 25 innings in four games during the week. The rookie catcher has started eight straight games behind the plate. He went 4-for-4 with three RBI in the series-opening win over Retrievers and then pushed across the go-ahead run in Game 2 with a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt single. Posavec had a .818 slugging and .583 on-base percentage against UMBC. He was also honored as BU’s Athlete of the Week.
Binghamton has won four straight games and five of its last six.
