Bearcat Volleyball Blog

During the Binghamton volleyball non-conference tournament schedule, a different Bearcat will be writing a weekend blog discussing life on the road as a BU student-athlete.

This weeks blog was written by senior captain Michelle McDonough. BU traveled to the nation’s capital this past weekend to compete in the Georgetown Classic, finishing out their non-conference tournament schedule. BU went 0-3 during the tournament, losing a heartbreaker to East Carolina. The Bearcats will be in action this week against the Siena Saints in a non-conference matchup.

Our trip to Washington, D.C. was packed with excitement and emotions. As a team, we felt excitement, disappointment, laughter, anxiety, togetherness, etc. We opened the weekend with Georgetown on their home court in McDonough Gym. We put up a tough fight losing two of the sets by 2 points. We were right there in the fight, but we were unable to finish in the end. It was a tough match and one that we learned a lot from.

From there we got back on the bus and drove around the monuments and the D.C. area in general. Our fantastic bus driver doubled as our tour guide and informed us of all the in’s-and-out’s of the D.C. area. It was a great time bonding with teammates, as we walked around the Abraham Lincoln monument and Vietnam Memorial. We cherished and shared our American history with our three international teammates Anna, Kseniia, and Iva. We even raised a debate on the bus about the history and cause of WWI. It was a great time, shared with great people.

As night came upon us, the water fountains and lights that lit up the monuments were a breathtaking sight. We were able to see the White House and Capitol, but only from afar. We didn’t have time to go in or walk around either building. After our sight-seeing tour, we went for a late dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s. It was delicious especially because we were all starving.

The next day was all business as we woke up to face both Furman and East Carolina University. We had a rough match against Furman University losing in straight sets. We were disappointed with our performance and made a pact to play better later that afternoon. Our match against ECU started in the same format as the morning match. However, we were able to pull ourselves out of a hole. We tied the match by winning the third and fourth sets of the match. We were able to rally together and leave it up to the decisive fifth set. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to pull the last set out.

We lost the ECU match in five games, yet that was the moment we proved to ourselves that no match is ever over. There is always that chance to win, you just have to believe. We look forward to learning from and improving on these matches as we head into of conference play.
