COLUMBIA, MO.—The Binghamton volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Mizzou Tiger Invitational, Friday afternoon. In their first match of the season the Bearcats fell to host Missouri in straight sets (15-25, 9-25, 17-25). Later in the day BU fell to North Dakota State 3-0 (13-25, 12-25, 19-25).

“It was a good learning experience for everybody and we got some nice things out of the matches,” said head coach Glenn Kiriyama. “A few of the new players got extended playing time, so it was nice to see the freshmen contribute. We had a lot of unforced errors and our serving needs to get better, so we have a lot to work on. But we are looking forward to playing again tomorrow and having another opportunity to get better.”

Against Missouri the Bearcats played well early on matching the Tigers point-for-point in the first set. Binghamton performed well, forcing Missouri mistakes and putting away sets. However, with scored tied at eight midway through the frame Missouri went on a 17-7 run, taking the first set 25-15. Freshman Kristin Hovie led the offensive charge for the BU, putting away five kills in the first set.

The second set was not a particularly good one for Binghamton, as they quickly fell behind 10-1. Unable to dig themselves out of a deep hole, BU dropped the second set 25-9. The Tiger defense held Hovie to just one kill during the set, limiting the Bearcats’ offense.

In the third and final frame Kiriyama was able to motivate his team after a poor second set. BU once again matched the Tigers point-for-point, taking a 12-11 lead on a Missouri service error. From there Missouri rattled off a 14-5 run to win the set 25-17.

Hovie led the Bearcats with 11 kills in her collegiate debut, compiling a hitting percentage of .304. Fellow freshman, setter Amanda Dettmann handed out 20 assists while adding two digs and two blocks. Sophomore libero Xiomara Ortiz picked up 10 digs for Binghamton.

As a unit Binghamton hit at rate of just .041 while Missouri compiled a hitting percentage of .438. The Tiger’s defense was stout, outblocking BU 10-6 and picking up 11 more digs than the Bearcats. Five of Binghamton’s six freshmen all saw their first collegiate action against Missouri.

In their second match of the day the Bearcats fell by the same score, dropping their match against North Dakota State 3-0 (13-25, 12-25, 19-25). In the first set the Bison jumped out to 10-0 lead and never looked back as the Bearcats had no answer early. A pair of service aces by freshman Emily Litwin cut the score to 10-5, but the deficit was too much as North Dakota State took the first set 25-13.

During the second set BU took an early 3-2 lead on a Hovie kill and NDSU attack error. A 4-0 run by the Bison gave them a 6-3 advantage as they began to pull away. A kill by freshman Jordan Snapp made the score 13-9, but a pair of 5-0 runs by the Bison closed out set two, 25-12.

The final set of the day was the most successful for the Bearcats as they scored a match-high 19 points. At one point in the third frame BU held a 11-7 lead thanks to a kill by freshman Annelot Nieuwenhuis. However, North Dakota State went on a 5-0 run to take a slim 12-11 lead. The turning point of the set followed a kill by Nieuwenhuis that gave BU a 19-17. The Bearcats were unable to score again while the Bison scored eight straight points to take the set 25-19.

Hovie led the Bearcats with five kills, while Nieuwenhuis added four of her own. Dettmann tallied 15 assists and Ortiz collected 11 digs.

Binghamton attack percentage went down in their second match, totaling a hit rate of .000 and only 19 kills. The Bearcats were outblocked 10-0, as the Bison put away 35 kills.

BU plays twice tomorrow, first against Idaho State at 10:30 a.m. (EST) and then again versus Tulane at 4:30 p.m. (EST).
