VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University’s student-athletes continue to surpass the national average in their academic achievements, according to the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data released by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon.  Binghamton’s 21 sports teams earned a GSR rating of 83 percent for the 2004 cohort year (students who began college in 2004).  The single-year national GSR was 82 percent.  Additionally, Binghamton’s GSR for the last four graduating classes (2001-04) was 85 percent, above the NCAA average of 80 percent.

The BU men’s basketball program stood alone in the America East as the only men’s team to achieve a perfect 100 percent GSR for the entire four-year period (2001-04).  The average GSR for America East men’s basketball programs was 77 percent, which is still 11 points higher than the national average.  Other BU teams to score a perfect 100 percent during the four-year range were women’s swimming and diving (2002-04), golf (2004), softball (2003), men’s soccer (2002), women’s lacrosse (2002) and women’s track & field (2001).

The GSR data indicates the number of student-athletes earning a degree within six years.  The NCAA developed the GSR to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes.  The GRS holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate.  The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.  Under the GSR calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing transfer students who leave in good academic standings.  These outgoing transfers are essentially passed to the receiving institution’s GSR cohort.  The NCAA began compiling these figures with the entering freshman class of 1995.  The last entering class for which data are available is 2004.
