Binghamton wrestling positioned second in CAA Preseason Rankings

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University wrestling has four top-ranked individuals and will start the 2010-11 season ranked No. 2 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

The CAA released its Preseason Rankings with team position determined by a compilation of individual placement in each weight class. The defending champion Bearcats (36 pts.) have eight ranked individuals and are behind only Hofstra (10 ranked, 44 pts.) in the seven-team conference. Behind BU are Old Dominion (33 pts.), Rider (31), Boston University (24), Drexel (21) and George Mason (21).

Talented freshmen Tyler Beckwith (174) and Lance Moore (Hwt.) were named to the CAA Preseason All-Freshman Team, which consisted of one wrestler from each weight class.

Beckwith was a two-time state champion at Greene High School and became the first wrestler in history to win NHSCA national championships in all four high school grade-levels.

“This is a testament of the success Tyler had in his high school career,” Popolizio said. “We see this as just the beginning of an illustrious collegiate career.”

Moore is another local recruit with a storied scholastic career, having won the state title in an undefeated senior season at nearby Johnson City High.

“Lance finished up a great senior campaign and we hope his growth and development continues to build in our room, propelling him to a great year,” Popolizio said.

Defending CAA champions Anwar Goeres (141 lbs.), Justin Lister (157) and Nate Schiedel (184) received top-billing in their weight classes. Also ranked No. 1 is sophomore Donnie Vinson at 149. Junior Matt Kaylor is positioned No. 2 at 165, Moore is fourth at heavyweight and Beckwith and freshman Nick Meinsen (133) are each ranked fifth.
