Binghamton’s Anna Lejina named America East Player of the Week

America East release

VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior outside hitter Anna Lejina was named America East Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon. Lejina stood out in a pair of conference wins for BU last week.

“Anna was able to come through with some big time hits throughout the weekend but really shined near the end of both matches to help us secure the wins,” head coach Glenn Kiriyama said.

This marks the first conference Player of the Week honor for a Binghamton player this season (Julie Chambers has earned Setter of the Week honors twice - Sept. 7 and 13).

In their second match of the week Binghamton had a dramatic come from behind victory over Stony Brook, 3-2. Lejina led the way for BU putting away 20 terminations on .255 hitting. Her final two kills of the fifth set closed out the Seawolves and secured Binghamton’s fourth straight win.

The win over Stony Brook coupled with Albany’s loss to Hartford put Binghamton into a tie atop the conference standings with the Great Danes. Each team is 4-1 as they face-off Friday evening in Albany. The match will be the first time the two teams have met since last year’s championship game.

Lejina played a solid game against Hartford last Friday, helping the Bearcats to a sweep of the Hawks. She recorded 15 kills on .419 hitting while picking up nine digs. For the week, Lejina recorded 4.38 kills per set with a total of 35 on .321 hitting.

Binghamton is 9-11 overall heading into a home-and-home with Albany this weekend.

Lejina’s play last week moved her up on Binghamton’s Division I top-ten list for kills. She is now fifth with a total of 1,040 passing Megan Hoag (2003-06) and Jacki Kane (2004-07). With 38 more terminations Lejina can take over sole possession of third place.

Binghamton travels to Albany, N.Y. Friday night to take on the Great Danes. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
