BU athletics makes elite list for academic and athletic excellence

NCSA Power Rankings

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University athletics has earned inclusion on a national list of Division I universities with high academic standards and athletics achievement. Binghamton is ranked No. 90 (out of 311) in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, released by the association.

Binghamton is the lone SUNY school and one of just four America East schools to be recognized on the Division I list.

NCSA Athletic Recruiting’s Collegiate Power Rankings assess the academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country. The Power Rankings were developed to help prospective student-athletes and their families evaluate the particular strengths of the top colleges and universities at the Division I, II and III levels.

The Collegiate Power Rankings from NCSA Athletic Recruiting are calculated by averaging student-athlete graduation rates, academic rankings provided by U.S. News & World Report, and the strength of athletic departments as determined by the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup ranking.

“What a great accomplishment this is for our student athletes and staff,” interim athletics director Jim Norris said. “We’re extremely proud of this recognition which essentially verifies that our student-athletes represent our outstanding academic institution in a tremendous fashion.”

Binghamton ranked 80th (out of 231) in the U.S. News & World Report “Academics” category and ranked 146th (out of 311) in the “Athletics” component. The high finish in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was due to the national success of BU’s volleyball, wrestling and men’s tennis teams. It marked the second-straight year BU has finished among the top half of Division I programs in the Cup standings.
