ORONO, Maine—Already assured of postseason berths but jockeying for seeding, Binghamton (21-24, 13-8 AE) and Maine (27-22, 16-6) split a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The Bearcats rolled to an 8-0 win in the opener before surrendering a ninth-inning walk-off hit in a 2-1 nightcap loss. The host Black Bears clinched the No. 2 seed with the win and BU will grab the No. 3 spot with a win on Sunday or an Albany loss to Stony Brook. The Seawolves clinched the top seed with their first place finish, ending BU’s run of four straight regular season crowns.

In the opener, senior James Giulietti and two relievers held Maine scoreless on five singles and BU scored twice in the first inning, three times in the fifth and three more in the seventh for the 8-0 decision. Giulietti (5-5) scattered four singles in 5.0 shutout innings. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. With the America East tournament just four days away, Giulietti and game 2 starter Mike Augliera were used judiciously with firm pitch counts.

Sophomore Lee Sosa and senior Zach Juliano each tossed a scoreless inning to finish off Giulietti’s win.

Senior right fielder Peter Bregartner continued his assault on America East pitching with a 2-for-3, four-RBI performance. Bregartner belted a two-run home run over the right field wall in the first inning - his fourth of the season. He then added a two-run double in the fifth. Bregartner is hitting .417 with 20 RBI in 21 league games.

Senior designated hitter Jeff Skelhorne-Gross added a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 5-0. In the seventh, sophomore catcher Mike Danaher delivered an RBI single and sophomore third baseman Jordon Smucker and freshman shortstop John Howell brought in runs with bases-loaded walks.

Danaher went 3-for-3 with an RBI, raising his season average to .295. Senior left fielder Corey Taylor went 2-for-3.

The Bearcats outhit Maine 10-5 and snapped the Black Bears’ 11-game win streak.

In game 2, junior pitcher Mike Augliera allowed just one hit in 6.0 shutout innings before departing. The Bearcats nursed a 1-0 lead until Maine struck for two deciding runs in the bottom of the ninth. A solo home run to open the inning tied the game. An ensuing walk came back to bite loser Morgan Smith, who struck out back-to-back Maine hitters before a two-out double plated the winning run.

Sophomore reliever Joe Swindells tossed two scoreless innings.

Junior first baseman Dave Ciocchi drove in BU’s lone run with a two-out RBI single in the third inning. The hit scored Howell, who had walked to lead off the frame. Ciocchi had half of BU’s four hits in the game.

The two teams finish the regular season with another twinbill Saturday.
