BU basketball programs lead America East in attendance
Bearcats men's and women's teams soar above conference averages
March 23, 2011
VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University men’s and women’s basketball programs led the America East in average home attendance for the 2010-11 seasons - the first time the two programs have swept the honors. It marks the eighth consecutive season that the men have won the conference attendance crown and the first time the women have drawn the most fans.
“During my 20 plus years at Binghamton, the campus and community have always been extremely supportive,” interim director of athletics Jim Norris. “We are pleased to once again lead the conference in attendance and we want to thank our loyal fans. We look forward to surpassing our attendance totals again next season.”
The BU men’s program drew 45,209 fans to 13 home games at the Events Center for an average of 3,478 per contest. That figure was nearly double the conference average (1,749) and more than 900 more per game than second-place Vermont (2,548), despite playing five home games while students were on break. The men drew 4,000 or more three times, including a season-high 4,309 for a November 30 game against Canisius.
The women averaged 1,515 fans for their 12 home games. That average was nearly double the conference average (837) and ahead of runnerup Hartford (1,327). The women used that home court advantage to go 10-2 at the Events Center. A regular-season high of 3,263 watched BU take on Vermont on February 12.
