BU men’s basketball coach Macon gets contract extension

VESTAL, N.Y.—After providing critical stability to the men’s basketball program during the last two seasons, Binghamton University interim head coach Mark Macon has signed a contract extension through the 2013-14 season, the athletic department announced today. Macon, who had one year remaining on his current deal, will shed the “interim” label and continue as the Bearcats’ coach for three more seasons following the current 2010-11 campaign.

“We have been very pleased with the leadership, stability and integrity that Mark has brought to the program as head coach,” said Jim Norris, interim director of athletics. “Mark and his staff have worked very hard to build the type of program that our department, our campus, and our community wants and expects. Above all, Mark has demonstrated a full commitment to the education of our young men and to their roles as students within the larger structure of our University and also as role models and ambassadors in our community. We are very fortunate to have Mark in a leadership role at this important time for our basketball program.”

Macon is a former three-time collegiate All-American at Temple who went on to play six seasons in the NBA. He remains the all-time scoring leader at Temple (2,609 pts.) and the Atlantic 10 Conference. He graduated from Temple with a degree in education in 1991. After serving as an assistant coach at Binghamton for two seasons, Macon took over the head coaching reigns on October 14, 2009.

“The University is proud to have Mark become the head coach. He is extremely dedicated to this university and our athletics department. Mark will provide exceptional leadership to our student-athletes and coaching staff,” said Interim President, C. Peter Magrath.

Macon steered the 2009-10 team to a surprisingly-successful season, finishing in fifth place with an 8-8 mark. This year’s squad has battled injuries and a handful of narrow defeats but is poised to compete at the America East Championship on March 3-6 in Hartford.
