BU men’s golf climbs to third-place through second round of America Sky Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—The Binghamton University golf team
moved up the leaderboard with a score of 298 in the second round of the America Sky Championship Tuesday. Posting the second-lowest total of the day, Binghamton jumped three spots up to third place and trails Sacramento State by nine shots heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Sacramento State leads the 12-team field on the strength of a 36-hole total of 596. The Bearcats followed up a 307 in the opening round with a 298 on Tuesday. BU is the only team in field who hasn’t had a player card a score of 80 or higher.

Binghamton managed a three-spot jump on the strength of consistent play from the entire lineup. All five Bearcats sit within the top-20 as the team tossed in a pair of 74’s and 75’s in Tuesday’s second round.

“The intimidation factor wasn’t there today,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “They played really solid today and we are definitely optimistic about our chances tomorrow. If we can put together a great putting round, which we are due for, we have a shot at pulling it off.”

Senior co-captain Jake Katz hit 16 greens en route to a second-round total of 5-over-par (76). The reigning America Sky Tri-Player of the Year, Katz trails 36-hole leader Nick Bisogno by four shots.

With a two-day total of 150, junior Mike Surdey is tied for 10th and lies five shots behind the leader Bisogno. Senior co-captain Andrew Marler tossed in the team’s other 74 in a consistent round.

Sophomore David Cellura and freshman Bryce Edmister have matching scorecards of 79-75 following the first two days of competition. Both players are tied for 19th in the individual standings.

Binghamton will compete in the final pairing on Wednesday with Sacramento State and Weber State at 8:00 a.m. (PST).
