SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—The Binghamton University golf team
fired a 307 in the opening round of the America Sky Championship Monday at Troon North Golf Club. Senior Jake Katz carded a 2-over-par 73, trailing first round leader Jordan Weir by five shots.
Sacramento State leads the 12-team field on the strength of a 296 in the opening round.
A breezy morning that featured swirling winds at times created difficult scoring conditions at the par-71, 7,025-yard Tom Weiskopf design, which holds the top golf ranking in Arizona.
“The course is visually intimidating, but our guys became more comfortable with it by the end of their round,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “With the conditions today, a team score of 300 would have been a great goal. But we didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot today. We are looking forward to posting some better scores out there tomorrow.”
The reigning America Sky Tri-Player of the Year, Katz managed a 2-over-par for a share of sixth place. Junior Mike Surdey carded a 5-over-par 76, which was good for a tie at 16th.
Sophomore David Cellura, senior co-captain Andrew Marler, and freshman Bryce Edmister are all tied for 30th after firing a 79 in the first round. Edmister made an impressive recovery on his second nine after carding a 45 at the turn. His back nine total of 34 was the lowest total on that side for the entire day.
Second round action will continue Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. (PST).
Jake Katz 73 (+2)
Mike Surdey 76 (+5)
David Cellura 79 (+8)
