MORGANTOWN, W.V.—Freshman forward Andy Bevin scored twice late in the first half, leading No. 12 West Virginia (2-1) to a 2-1 victory over Binghamton (1-1) in the first round of the WVU/Nike Men’s Soccer Classic on Friday night on Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The game marked the first of two games over the next 10 days that the Bearcats will play against nationally-ranked opponents.

The match also marked a homecoming for Bearcats head coach Paul Marco, who played for the Mountaineers from 1987-90 and was the program’s head coach from 1996-01. In 1999, he was named the BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year.

On Friday night, junior forward Jake Keegan got the Bearcats off to a quick start, netting an unassisted goal in the ninth minute. It marked his second goal in as many games for him this season.

The Bearcats stayed on top of the match until Bevins deadlocked the game in the 31st minute when he finished a cross from Paebo Doue. Ten minutes later, he put West Virginia ahead to stay on a goal that was assisted by Uwem Etuk.

West Virginia held a 14-7 advantage in shot, but the Bearcat defense limited the Mountaineers to just five shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Hayen made three saves for Binghamton.

“We came out fantastic and were on top of the match early,” head coach Paul Marco said. “West Virginia, however, is a great time and is definitely worthy of its ranking. We had some lapses late in the first half, which you can not have against a team like them.”

Up next for the Bearcats is a noon match on Sunday against Houston Baptist in the final round of the WVU/Nike Classic.

NOTES: The Mountaineers came into the match ranked No. 12 by the NSCAA and No. 14 by College Soccer News.
