BU men’s soccer tabbed fifth in America East Preseason Poll

Conference Release
VESTAL, N.Y.—The America East Conference has released its 2011 preseason poll and Binghamton has been picked to finish fifth in the eight-team league. The voting was done by the eight head coaches with no one allowed to vote for their own team.

Defending regular-season champion Boston edged out 2010 tournament champion UMBC for the top spot. New Hampshire and Stony Brook also finished ahead of the Bearcats while Vermont, Hartford and Albany rounded out the rest of the teams.

Leading the Bearcats this season is two-time second-team all-conference midfielder Ryan Walter, who is the team captain for the second year in a row. Junior forward Jake Keegan, who led the PDL in scoring this past summer, has scored 10 goals the past two years. Sophomore midfielder Tommy Moon was an America East All-Rookie selection last year and junior forward Adam Whitehead led Binghamton in total points in 2010.

In the backfield, junior Austin Hughes and sophomore Tommy Klim started every game last season while sophomore Chris Hayen recorded four shutouts in his first year as the starting goalkeeper. Other veterans returning include senior midfielder Santigui Tounkara and junior back/midfielder Trey Jasenski.

With 11 freshman and just eight upperclassmen, Binghamton has its youngest team since Paul Marco took over as the head coach in 2002. Still, the 10th-year coach is optimistic based on what he has seen through a week of the preseason.

“Our team is coming together nicely,” he said. “This is a very deep freshman class and the chemistry within the team is quite good. We are heading in the right direction.

Binghamton kicks off its 2011 schedule at Bucknell on August 26 at 7 p.m. The Bearcats have made the America East tournament as a top-four seed eight consecutive years and reached the finals six times in a row (2003-08). Binghamton won the 2003 and 2006 conference tournaments and captured the regular-season title in 2006 and 2007.
