Preliminary List for NCAA East Regional Meet

VESTAL, N.Y.—The NCAA has released its list of Division I East and West Region Track & Field qualifiers, and the Binghamton men’s squad has a program-best five individuals and one relay quartet that have advanced to the East Region Championship. The three-day event will take place May 29-31 at Indiana University.

The top 48 ranked individuals and top 24 relay squads from each of the two regions will take part in their respective championships. From there, the top 12 finishers in each event at the two meets will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will take place June 9-12 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

“This is the biggest group we have had at a regional meet,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “Now that they don’t take conference champions, it is even harder to make it.”

Senior Erik van Ingen, who earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, is seeded No. 26 in the 1,500 (3:45.70). Two weeks ago, he won the America East outdoor title in that same event for the second time in three years.

Fellow senior Cazal Arnett is ranked No. 16 in the 400 (46.42) and anchored the 4x400 relay team which is ranked No. 20. Also running on the relay team is sophomore Casey Gilbert as well as seniors Christian Smith and Andy Haupt. Two weeks ago, the Bearcat quartet captured the America East outdoor title for the second consecutive season.

Sophomore Jeff Martinez, who is the two-time defending America East outdoor champion in the 10,000, is seeded No. 26 heading into the Regional Meet (29:48.60). At the 2010 East Regional Meet, Martinez placed 30th overall.

Making his first appearance at a regional track championship meet is senior Adam Quinn, who is No. 42 in the 3,000 Steeplechase (9:01.08). He was the runner-up at the recent America East Outdoor Championships.

Junior Robb Quiller got the 48th and final slot in the pole vault (16-4). He won the 2009 and 2010 America East Outdoor titles and was the runner up two weeks ago.

NOTE: Also announced was the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) final Northeast Region Poll for the 2011 outdoor season. The Binghamton men’s squad is ranked eighth. At the conclusion of the 2011 indoor season, the Bearcats were ranked a program-best fourth.
