VESTAL, N.Y.—The National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA) has released its list of 2013 All-America Scholar-Athletes, which includes seven selections from the Binghamton softball team. In addition, the Bearcats earned the NFCA’s All-Academic Team Award after posting a 3.223 combined GPA for the 2012-13 academic year.
In order to earn NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore status and have posted at least a 3.50 GPA for the academic year in consideration. For All-Academic Team status, a combined GPA of 2.90 was the cutoff point.
Current seniors Jessica Bump, Mikala King and Colleen Dougherty each earned the accolade for the second consecutive year. In addition, all four players from last year’s graduating class also were cited by the NFCA (Jessica Phillips, Kate Price, Shannon Kane and Rhoda Marsteller).
“Our upperclassmen have worked very hard in the classroom,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Their recognition by the NFCA is well deserved.”
Since 2010, Binghamton has posted 31 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete selections.
Binghamton finished the 2013 campaign with a 30-17 record.
