VESTAL, N.Y.—For the third straight season the Binghamton men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs have earned Scholar All-America Team honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The men placed 25th in the nation with a overall GPA of 3.12. The women ranked No. 90 out of 200 programs with a 3.09 GPA. In order to earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors, a program must have at least a 3.00 GPA.

The women’s swimming and diving team continued their academic excellence by making the list for the seventh year in a row. The Bearcats posted a GPA of 3.0 or better nine of the ten semesters under head coach Sean Clark.

“We’re pleased to have more recognition for our academic efforts this past Spring,” Clark said. “The men had their second-best semester in my time here (behind a 3.16 in the Spring of ‘09), and we’re happy to be in the top-25 teams based on GPA. It feels good. Our women were solid as usual with almost two-thirds of the team over a 3.0 GPA, and finishing 90th in the classroom is a decent showing. I do know that we can be better, and the team will continue to strive forward in and out of the pool.”

Both teams have had success in the classroom throughout the year. The men’s team placed the second highest number of swimmers on the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll (nine) while the women tied for third with 11. The swimming and diving program placed a total of 34 student-athletes on the honor roll, 20 from the women’s squad and 14 from the men’s.

In addition, to the Scholar All-America recognition, the swimming and diving program swept the America East Scholar Athlete awards. Junior Joe Perez-Rogers won the men’s award and senior Amanda Ciccone was honored with the women’s. Ciccone was also the first Bearcat to earn America East All-Academic Team honors, the men place four student-athletes on the team. The Bearcats also had three members inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society (Chi Alpha Sigma) this spring rounding out their impressive academic accolades.

Binghamton finished their season on a high note, earning Clark and his coaching staff top honors at the 2011 America East Championships. The Clark’s staff swept the Coaching Staff of the Year awards, after the men finished third and the women fifth at the championships. Each squad had two gold medal winner apiece as the staff shared the honors with UMBC (men) and New Hampshire (women).
