BU volleyball’s Lammert chosen as America East Woman of the Year finalist

Conference Release

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - Senior middle blocker Dawn Lammert has been named as one of three finalists for the 2010 America East Woman of the Year award. The honor recognizes the conference’s senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.

Lammert graduated last month with a master’s degree in biology in just her fourth year at Binghamton. Lammert also received an undergraduate degree from BU. She will now begin a dual MD/PhD program at SUNY Upstate Medical Center.

Lammert was a team captain of the 2009 America East Volleyball Champion Bearcats and was among the conference’s leaders in blocks in each of the last three seasons. She also competed on Binghamton’s track and field team, placing fourth in the high jump at the 2009 America East Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Lammert received her undergraduate degree summa cum laude in biology with a German minor and a 3.93 grade-point average, and was named to the America East All-Academic team in 2008 and 2009. This past season she was also voted to the ESPN/CoSIDA District I Volleyball All-Academic First Team. Lammert served as a graduate student researcher since 2008, teaching undergraduate lab techniques, and received the Dr. Joseph J. Eron Undergraduate Research Grant to conduct cell culture work related to fetal alcohol syndrome. She has received several other academic honors, including the 2008 NCAA Award of Merit and induction into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.

In the community, Lammert has volunteered her time both on a continuous and one-time basis in various organizations. She has served in Peer Pride with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) since 2007 and mentored with the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier since 2008. Lammert has also spent time with the Binghamton University Scholars Program and the Merton Area Running Club, coaching a middle school summer track club. Her one-time projects include Habitat for Humanity, Binghamton Flood Relief, the Susan G. Komen Dig for the Cure and a letter-writing campaign with St. Jude’s Up Till Dawn.

The three finalists were selected from a pool of the 13 America East institutional nominations, which were announced on May 11. To be nominated, student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2010 spring season, received her undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2010 term and had a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.500 (4.000 scale).

In conjunction with the changes in the nomination process for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, the America East Woman of the Year award was established for the 2005-06 athletic season. Beginning in 2006, the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) started receiving conference-designated nominees in lieu of the previous institution- and state-based nomination format.

The 2010 America East Woman of the Year will be announced on Monday, June 7 at the conference’s Annual Meetings in Lake Placid, N.Y., as well as via a news release on

The America East Woman of the Year will then be forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee. The selection committee will select the top 10 winners in each NCAA division (I, II and III). From among those 30 honorees, the selection committee will determine the top three in each division. Finally, the members of the CWA will vote from among the top nine to determine the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year.
