MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—Sari Noga finished with a game-high 16 points, leading Minnesota (2-2) to a 65-40 win over Binghamton (2-1) in the opening round of the SUBWAY Women’s Basketball Classic on Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena. The loss knocks Binghamton into Sunday’s consolation game, where they will face either Nevada or North Dakota State at 5:30 p.m. EST.
For the Bearcats, who led for most of the first half, senior guard Orla O’Reilly led the squad with 13 points, senior guard Andrea Holmes finished with 12 points, three assists and three rebounds while senior forward Viive Rebane chipping in 11 points, four rebounds and tied a career-high with three blocks.
O’Reilly scored nine of her points in the first 12 minutes of the game as Binghatmon held a 19-16 lead at the eight-minute media timeout. From there, however, the host Gophers went on a 20-3 run to take a 35-22 lead at the break. Noga scored six of her points during that spurt.
Holmes cut the lead to 35-26 with 18:07 left in regulation but a 14-6 Minnesota run over the next five minutes stretched the lead to 49-32.
“I thought the start of the game was fantastic for us but Minnesota is a good team and they were able to adjust,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “I thought we kept our composure coming out in the second half and defended them well after the break.”
Junior forward Kara Elofson, who attended nearby Hopkins High School, finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.
