VESTAL, N.Y.—Freshman defender Sophie Therien drilled a 21-yard free kick into the far left corner with 6:13 remaining in the second overtime to lift visiting Buffalo to a 1-0 win over Binghamton in the season-opener for both teams Friday night from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

After a tripping foul just outside the right side of the box, BU set up a four-man wall, but Therien struck a hard left-footed kick past the wall and into the lower left corner.

The result was disappointing for a BU team that owned a considerable advantage in ball possession and shots, particularly in the first half when BU outshot Buffalo 7-1. But after struggling to mount an attack over the game’s first 60 minutes, the Bulls gained momentum midway through the second half and cashed in on the team’s best scoring chance.

“It was a well-played free kick ... give full credit to the Buffalo player,” BU head coach Sarah McClellan said. “I thought we played well and deserved more, but that’s the way the game of soccer is. We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities. I thought we created some good chances but we were just a little off tonight. But we competed and defended well. It was a great crowd tonight (479 fans) and hopefully we can build on this effort.”

The Bearcats pressed on the attack throughout the first half, earning four corner kicks and a handful of chances. Then late in the second half, BU had several good looks from the right side of the box - sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Cook met a through ball and shot wide left and junior forward Sarah Furminger drilled a shot high to the near post.

Sophomore keeper Carrie Martin made four saves for the Bearcats. Senior back Jennifer Abbate was named the team’s America East Player of the Game.

Binghamton plays at Delaware State on Sunday afternoon.
