VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton women’s soccer coach Sarah McClellan has finalized her team’s 2011 schedule and the 17-game slate features eight home games, games against teams from seven different conferences and four contests in the month of August as the season opens one week earlier.
‘We are excited for the 2011 season,” McClellan said. “This schedule highlights several 2010 NCAA tournament teams and conference champions including Lehigh and Siena and some historically talented teams in St Joe’s, St. Bonaventure and Bucknell. We will have to take full advantage of our opportunity to utilize our nonconference season games as critical preparation for the America East conference season.”
After the team reports for preseason training on August 4, BU will play two scrimmages before welcoming Mid-American Conference member Buffalo to the Bearcats Sports Complex on August 19 for the season opener. It will be just the fourth meeting between the longtime SUNY members.
After a road game at Delaware State on August 21, BU returns home to host Atlantic-10 member St. Joseph’s - the first of back-to-back games against A-10 foes. An away contest at St. Bonaventure finishes up the flurry of August games. The Bonnies won 12 games and advanced to their conference semifinals in 2010.
Another strong test awaits in early September as BU plays at Patriot League champion and 2010 NCAA participant Lehigh (Sept. 2), which went 11-5-4 last fall. Binghamton then plays back-to-back home games against NEC member FDU (Sept. 4) and Bucknell (Sept. 7). The Bison were the Patriot League co-champions in 2010 after going 5-2 in league play.
The Bearcats hit the road for their final two non-conference games - at MAAC champion and NCAA team Siena on September 11 and at Ivy League member Cornell on September 14. The Saints went 17-4 in 2010.
From there, BU embarks on its traditional eight-game America East slate with four home and four away games. The Bearcats make the long trek to Orono to face the Maine Black Bears in the opener to finish off a three-game road stretch (Sept. 25). Binghamton then hosts Hartford on September 29 in its home conference opener.
As the season winds down in late October and playoff spots are on the line, BU will have the luxury of playing its final two games at home - October 20 against Vermont and October 23 vs. UMBC. The postseason begins with America East quarterfinal play on October 27.
The 2010 Bearcats (4-11-2, 2-4-2 AE) narrowly missed their seventh straight postseason berth, falling short by one goal in each of their final two games and missing the sixth and final America East playoff spot by one point.
“Our spring team has taken significant strides forward heading into the summer,” McClellan said. “I expect us to hit the ground running come preseason.”
