BU wrestler McGarity earns national All-Academic honors

NWCA release

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton wrestler Ryan McGarity capped his final collegiate season with All-Academic honors, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced. He is the first BU wrestler since 2004 to earn national academic distinction and third honoree during the program’s Division I tenure. The awards are based on a combination of grade-point average (min. 3.0) and wrestling achievement (min. NCAA qualifier).

McGarity, a four-year letterwinner and 2011 NCAA qualifier, received his bachelor’s degree in marketing and now has a 3.46 in graduate school working toward his MBA. Earlier this month, he was selected as a BUAC Citizenship Award winner at the athletic department’s annual awards banquet.

On the mat, McGarity produced his finest collegiate season in 2010-11. He advanced to the CAA semifinals at 174 pounds and was rewarded for his 30-win season with a first-ever NCAA berth. Along the way, he placed third at the New York State Championship, fourth at the Cornell Body Bar Invitational, sixth at Penn State Open and was ranked 29th in the nation.

“Not only was Ryan a tremendous athlete on the mat for us the past five years, he was tremendous in the classroom,” head coach Pat Popolizio said. “He is the complete student-athlete. He has shown that hard-work in the classroom and on the mat pays off. We are extremely proud of Ryan and what he has done for our program. It is our goal to always produce All-Americans, both in the classroom and on the mat, and Ryan has shown that it can be achieved here at Binghamton University.”

McGarity joins Jerome Joe (2003) and Josh Ruff (2004) as BU’s Division I All-Academic wrestlers. The program also produced 15 Division III All-Academic recipients in the 1990s.
