VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore second baseman Jessica Bump has been named the America East Softball Player of the Week for May 7. It marks the first time in her career that she has earned a weekly accolade from the conference.
Bump led Binghamton to a 6-2 week by hitting .520 (13-for-25) with three home runs and seven RBI. She reeled off five extra-base hits and recorded a slugging percentage of 1.000. In the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Cornell, Bump recorded the first two-home run game of her career. She also had three hits in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader against Colgate and Sunday’s doubleheader against Niagara. In the field, Bump was a perfect 1.000 in 32 chances.
“Jessica finished the season playing really well and with a lot of confidence,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She has been more aggressive with each at-bat and has worked on having a better approach at the plate.”
With her torrid stretch, Bump finished the season with a career-high six home runs and 23 RBI, numbers that ranked second on the squad. Off the field, Bump was recognized for her academics two weeks ago when she was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society.
Bump is the fourth Binghamton softball player to earn a weekly award from the America East this year. Freshman shortstop Caitlyn Friis was the Rookie of the Week on Feb 20. Junior outfielder Jessica Phillips was the Player of the Week on March 5 and senior designated hitter Chelsea Horne was named the top player on April 2.
Binghamton concluded the 2012 campaign 22-29, including a 7-11 mark in the America East Conference.
