VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior second baseman Jessica Bump has been named the America East Softball Player of the Week for April 22. It marks the first time this season and the second time in her career that she has earned the conference’s weekly accolade.
Bump finished .467 with three home runs and six RBI as the Bearcats went 3-2 last week, taking two out of three conference games at Hartford in the process. She scored nine runs, recorded an on-base percentage of .600 as well as a slugging percentage of 1.113.
In the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, Bump recorded the second two-home run game of her career. She ended the three-game series at Hartford with a team-high .429 batting average.
For the season, Bump ranks fourth in the America East with a .358 batting average, is tied for second with eight home runs and is also tied for third with 33 RBI. In addition, Bump leads the conference in runs (38), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.717) and triples (five).
“Jess has been doing a great job all around for us,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She is carrying herself very well both at the plate and in the field. She has done a tremendous job in the leadoff spot and in setting the tone for our offense. She is a leader both on and off the field and continues to work hard all of the time.”
The first time Bump was named the America East Player of the Week came on May 7, 2012. In 2011, she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team.
Also on Monday, the America East confirmed that Binghamton and Albany have clinched berths in the America East Tournament. The four-team championship event will take place May 9-11 at the site of the America East’s regular season champion. The Bearcats (21-13, 10-2 AE) sit in second place, just one game behind the Great Danes (28-10, 11-1 AE).
Up next for Binghamton is a non-conference doubleheader at Colgate on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES: Bump is the second Binghamton player this season to earn the conference’s Player of the Week award. Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan got the nod on March 18.
