VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton wrestling has six wrestlers among the top-33 in their respective weights in the final NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, released by the NCAA. The NCAA also released its allotment of qualifier allocations and the CAA received 23 spots - a jump from the 17 awarded to the conference last year. The CAA received one spot at 125 pounds (champion), two berths at 133, 141, 149. 157, 174 and 184. The conference earned three NCAA qualifying spots at 197 and heavyweight and four at 165 pounds.
For the Bearcats, the six individuals who have been ranked all season long remained among those listed in the Coaches’ Panel. Heading the list is junior 149-pound Donnie Vinson (30-4), who is No. 4 in the rankings and also No. 4 in the RPI. Senior 157-pound Justin Lister (23-5) is No. 9 in the Coaches’ Poll and is No. 3 in the RPI, meaning he’s wrestled the third-hardest schedule of any 157-pounder in the country. Freshman heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski (23-6) is No. 17 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 8 in the RPI. Junior 184-pound Nate Schiedel (26-7) is No. 19 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 18 in RPI. Senior 165-pound Matt Kaylor (22-8) is No. 24 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 27 in RPI and sophomore 197-pound Cody Reed (20-12) is No. 30 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 27 in the RPI.
The RPI is important in determining the 40 at-large berths that will be up for grabs after the CAA Championship, which Binghamton will host at the Events Center on March 3. Four days later, the NCAA will announce the at-large selections. The NCAA Championship will be held on March 15-17 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
