Wrestling gains membership in prestigious EIWA

Bearcats will shift conference affiliation, compete alongside Cornell, Harvard in 18-team league

Wrestling gains membership in prestigious EIWA

Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University wrestling scored a big victory off the mat on Thursday when the Bearcats were accepted into the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) beginning in the 2013-14 season.

The EIWA is the oldest and one of the most prestigious conferences in the country and in gaining membership, BU will wrestle alongside such elite programs and institutions as Harvard and Cornell. The EIWA announced today that it will add four teams to its current membership (14) for next season, and earning invitations along with Binghamton were Hofstra, Drexel and Boston University – all previously aligned with the CAA.

“We are honored to have our wrestling program invited for membership in the EIWA,” Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “The EIWA represents scholarship and athletic achievement on a national level and we are excited to compete alongside such renowned institutions and wrestling programs.”

The composition of the EIWA features six Ivy League and five Patriot League members. The current 14-school membership is: American, Army, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers, Sacred Heart.

“This is monumental on a number of levels,” head coach Matt Dernlan said. “Academically, it speaks volumes about Binghamton as an institution and President Stenger’s vision moving forward that we are seen as ‘in line’ with some of the most elite private schools in the country. From a wrestling standpoint, to be viewed as adding value to one of the most powerful wrestling conferences in the country speaks to what the future holds as we progress as an emerging national power.

“We are grateful for the efforts of Greg Strobel, executive director of the EIWA and Associate AD at Lehigh, as well as other administrators and members of the committee. We also are indebted to Steve Erber, current Cornell administrator (and founder and former coach of Binghamton wrestling). Steve’s been instrumental leading the charge on our behalf, and it took many hours and months of deliberations to make this a reality.”

The EIWA has crowned 88 individual NCAA champions in its storied history, which dates back to 1905. The conference held its 109th championship this past March at Rutgers, and the strength of the conference has resulted in 50 NCAA automatic berths being allotted to member schools in 2012-13 (45 automatic). That number of qualifiers was second only to the Big Ten and was more than double the allotments given to the CAA. The EIWA crowned 13 All-Americans in 2012 and had three teams finish in the NCAA top-10 (Cornell, American, Lehigh) in 2011. Cornell has captured the last seven EIWA titles.

The 2014 EIWA Championship will be hosted by Penn and the Bearcats will be eligible to compete for NCAA berths and the team title immediately.

“The EIWA Championship is one of the premier NCAA qualifiers in the country,” Dernlan added. “It will be a great challenge - one we’ve positioned ourselves for – and an opportunity to move Binghamton wrestling forward on the national scene. What better platform to do that than at arguably the second-most competitive qualifying tournament in the country, behind only the Big Ten.”

The Bearcats will likely add many of the EIWA members to the team’s dual match schedule for the upcoming seasons.

“We’re excited to forge new relationships and grow new rivalries with some of the premier institutions in the Northeast.”

Binghamton has churned out 21 NCAA qualifiers in the last four years.

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton men’s basketball program has announced its 2013 summer camp schedule. Head coach Tommy Dempsey and his staff will conduct two different camps during the months of June and August. Registration is available by clicking on the green button below or filling out the camp flyer and mailing it back to the Events Center. Check in for all camps will be held in the Events Center.

Dempsey’s series of basketball camps coined, ‘Net Results’ offers area youths the chance to learn the game from his staff and players. The program has a proven record of individual improvement and enhancing one’s knowledge of the game. Coach Dempsey has constructed a camp designed to develop players by using methods he and his staff employ at the Division I level. Both skill and educational sessions will be provided for all camps.

The first of Dempsey’s two instructional forums is a day camp held from June 24-28. The camp is open to all boys ages 8-16 and will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily. The cost of the camp is $250 with registration beginning on the first day of camp (June 24) at 9 a.m. in the Events Center. During the five-day session, campers will be divided into leagues based on age and ability. On day one, players will be drafted onto teams and assigned a coach for the week. A game schedule will then be created for a week full of competition. Parents are welcome to attend the camp and spectate.

Dempsey will hold his ‘Elite Prospect Camp’ from August 2-4. The three-day overnight camp is open to boys grades 7th-12th and costs $150 for day campers and $250 for overnight campers. The ‘Elite Prospect Camp’ is for 7th-12th graders who are looking to further their skills and play at the collegiate level. The camp is a perfect place to showcase one’s skill and abilities as well as learn what it takes to be an intercollegiate student-athlete.

Blogging our way through the 2012 season (As of August 13)

August 13, 2012

AUGUST 13, 2012

Going the Distance

During his four years at Binghamton, Ryan Walter was always one of the fittest players on the men’s soccer team. Each summer, he won the preseason fitness run by a substantial margin. So it was little surprise to any of his teammates when he decided to run the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club Winter Marathon in March.

“I have always wanted to run a marathon just to experience it,” he said. “It seemed to be a great a challenge, especially for me since I am not a big runner to start with. Other soccer alum before me like Kyle Kucharski and Chris Terry also ran a marathon after their senior season. Really, it was just a challenge that I wanted to test myself with.

Walter started training for the February 19 event, which was held at the University of Albany, in December. His farthest training run was 20 miles but most of his runs were about 6-10 miles.

With his soccer career having ended, Walter continued to train on his own for the marathon while the Bearcats trained for the spring season. The rest of the team had little doubt that he would do well come race day.

“Ryan is one of the fittest guys I have ever had the pleasure of playing with,” Marts Reid-Warden said. “Every fitness test, he always set the bar high for the rest of the players so I wasn’t surprised at all when I heard he was running a marathon.”

“He pushes himself and excels at everything he does,” Trey Jasenski said. “So I knew he would do well.”

“Every year I was here, he always won the (two-mile) Cooper Test,” Jake Keegan said. “So I figured he was running about 13 Coopers.”

The night before the race, Walter stayed with Jasenski and his family outside out Albany.

“Trey and his family supported me the whole weekend of the race,” Walter said. “They were very gracious and allowed me to stay with them the weekend of the race. They made sure I was well fed and rested. I am very grateful for their hospitality and support.”

Walter clocked a time of 3:12.06 in his marathon debut. Jasenski, meanwhile, figured he would be done in about three hours and had planned to meet him at the finish line. That did not, however, go exactly as planned.

“I dropped him off and then we tried to figure out where the finish line was three hours later,” Jasenski said. “We were holding up signs, running around looking for him and finally found him and he looked…..dead.”

:I was very happy with my time especially it being my first time and a sporadic training schedule,” Walter said. “I was very relieved to cross line. Overall it was a long process and the effort paid off.”

Walter’s hard work at Binghamton paid off in several ways. In addition to being a two-year team captain and two-time, second team all-conference selection, he graduated magna cum laude and landed a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Looking back, Walter has found memories of his years with the Binghamton men’s soccer program.

“BU soccer was a fantastic experience,” he said, “Truthfully, the program has become like family for me. I greatly value all the friends and relationships that have made my time at BU something that I will always look back on with a smile. Coach Marco’s dedication to the team is outstanding. The amount of time and effort he puts into watching film and scouting teams is tremendous. His ability to prepare the team for an opponent is something that I have not had in any other coach.”

As for the current Bearcats, Walter is a teammate who helped them in many ways.

“He always worked for everyone,” Jasenski said. “He always pushed himself and set the standard for everyone else around him.”

“He is one of those guys who is always competitive and always wants to win,” Keegan said. “Everyone can learn from his competitive attitude on the field.”

AD Honor Roll

VESTAL, N.Y.—A record number of Binghamton student-athletes earned a 3.3 or higher grade-point average for the spring semester.

Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott announced Monday that 195 student-athletes met the lofty 3.3 GPA threshold in the spring and have been recognized on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. The number of honorees represents 47 percent of BU’s total student-athlete body - also equaling the highest percentage in the four semesters since the Honor Roll was instituted.

“This long list of worthy individuals further indicates the academic commitment of our student-athletes and shows that their dedication on the playing field is matched with equal achievement in the classroom.” Elliott said.

The list of recipients on the AD Honor Roll includes members of all 21 athletics teams at Binghamton, including 22 members of the men’s track and cross country programs and 20 members of the women’s soccer program. Every sports program had at least five Honor Roll recipients.

The release comes on the heels of another stellar semester for the department, whose student-athletes produced an all-sports GPA of 3.10 - the 15th consecutive semester above a 3.0 and fifth time in the last seven semesters the student-athlete body has reached an even-higher 3.1 mark.

The women’s tennis team captured the department’s Team Academic Cup with a 3.48 GPA.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Former BU pitching ace Murphy Smith has earned another honor as he continues his rise in the professional baseball ranks. For the second straight season, Smith has been selected as an all-star at the Double-A level. He will play in the 77th Annual Texas League All-Star Game, held at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Ark., on June 25.

Smith (5-7, 2.70) leads the Midland RockHounds in wins, WHIP (1.20) and ERA and is second in strikeouts (50). He ranks fifth in the Texas League in ERA and has trimmed that number down to 2.19 as a starter.

He was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week on June 4 for his performance in a pair of starts. Despite splitting decisions, he allowed just one run in 14 innings of work.

The former BU ace and 2009 America East Pitcher of the Year was selected by Oakland in the 13th round of the 2009 draft. Smith is in his second year at the Double-A level and has anchored the RockHounds rotation so far in 2013.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University student-athletes continue to raise the bar for academic achievement. The University’s 417 student-athletes produced a 3.1 grade-point average for the 2013 spring semester.

Additionally, the group eclipsed the 3.0 threshold for the 15th consecutive semester. It also marked the fifth time in the last seven semesters that the student-athletes reached the 3.1 mark.

“We are proud of the academic achievements of our student-athletes during the spring semester,” Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “These accomplishments speak to the their dedication and academic commitment. Additionally, with their meaningful community service and citizenship, our student-athletes truly embrace the vision of ‘excellence with honor.’”

Sixteen teams had a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher, headed by the women’s tennis team (3.48), which captured the department’s Academic Cup for maintaining the highest semester GPA among the 21 teams.

Both of BU’s America East spring championship teams – men’s tennis (3.47) and baseball (3.00) reached the high threshold during their title runs.

Individually, 64 percent of Binghamton student-athletes (268 total) recorded a 3.0 or higher. Forty-seven percent (195) earned a 3.3 or higher and nearly one-third of all student-athletes (128) achieved a 3.5 or higher.

Twenty-one student-athletes spanning 10 different teams earned a perfect semester GPA of 4.0.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott announced on Tuesday that Stephanie Allen has been named the University’s head women’s lacrosse coach. Allen served as the interim coach for the 2013 season and has been with the Bearcats program for six years.

“Stephanie brings a wealth of experience at the Division I level as a coach and also as a former student-athlete,” Elliott said. “She has demonstrated that her vision, knowledge and commitment to student-athlete welfare will guide the women’s lacrosse program as we move forward.”

Allen, a Columbus, Ohio native, took over the head coaching reigns in January and promptly produced BU’s first-ever first team all-conference player and two more all-rookie selections in 2013. Her passionate, mentoring leadership model served to quickly unite the Bearcats, who made significant strides on and off the field. Binghamton knocked off Vermont in a thrilling 9-8 game and came within one win of contending for a postseason berth in the America East. Allen also coached the program’s first-ever Under Armour/IWLCA North-South All-Star, Katherine Hunsberger.

As an assistant coach, Allen recruited an ESPN top-50 recruit and played a key role in the development of Binghamton’s first two-time America East all-conference selection, defender Siobhan Menz in 2009 and 2010. As the program’s academic liaison, Allen steered the 2011 squad to the top GPA in the America East for women’s lacrosse.

“I would like to thank Patrick Elliott and Binghamton University for giving me this opportunity, for which I am incredibly grateful,” Allen said. “I am excited to continue leading this outstanding group of young women and growing our women’s lacrosse program.  I think Pat and the committee saw that my vision for this program parallels the high expectations and standards of our athletics department and this University.  I look forward to what the future holds for Binghamton women’s lacrosse.”

Prior coming to Binghamton in 2007, Allen was the inaugural head coach at Presbyterian College (S.C.), where she built an NCAA Division I program from the ground level in four years at the helm.

She graduated from Limestone College in 2003, earning a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and studio art. Allen then earned her master’s degree in sports management from SUNY Cortland in 2010.

At Limestone, Allen was a captain and four-year starting midfielder.

Allen has been very active throughout campus and in the community. She served as the Director of the Broome County Girls Lacrosse Club and Youth League from 2007-2012 and currently sits on the Section IV Board of Women’s Lacrosse Officials, helping grow the sport throughout the Binghamton area. She is a member of the Women In Sports and Events (WISE) organization and was featured on their website this past September in the Member Spotlight segment. Allen also recently served on the University’s Presidential Yield Task Force Committee and has shared her expertise as a member of the Celebrating Women’s Athletics Committee.

She will welcome back 15 returning players for the 2014 season.

VESTAL, N.Y. – A pair of incoming distance runners continue to make history in their final high school outdoor track campaigns.

Eric Holt, who is a senior at Carmel High School, won the boys’ mile at the New York State Meet this past weekend. Eileen O’Hara, who runs for Webster-Thomas High School, captured the girls’ 1,500 at the same meet. The New York State Outdoor Track Meet encompasses all Class levels.

“We are very excited for Eric and Eileen,” Binghamton head cross country and assistant track coach Annette Acuff said. “What a great accomplishment for each of them. It’s so exciting to have them as Bearcats next year.”

Holt clocked a winning time of 4:07.00, which was the ninth-fastest high school time in New York State history. It is also currently ranked No. 16 in terms of the fastest high school performances in the nation this season. While he did not run the 3,200 at the New York State meet, Holt’s top time of 9:00.20 is ranked No. 37 in the nation this season.

O’Hara, meanwhile, clocked a time of 4:28.94, which is currently the tenth-fastest girl’s time in the nation this season. Earlier in the season, O’Hara clocked a time of 9:42.89 in the 3,000 at the Runnin’ Cadet Classic, which is currently the ninth-fastest time in the nation.

Both Holt and O’Hara will compete at the New Balance National Meet at North Carolina A&T June 14-16. Holt is entered in the boys’ 3,200 while O’Hara is slated to run in the girl’s 1,600 and 3,200.

When they arrive at Binghamton this fall, both Holt and O’Hara will join the cross country and track programs. Last fall, Holt placed third overall at the Nike Cross Country National New York Regional Meet. He was also third at the New York State Class A Championships. O’Hara, meanwhile, was 23rd at the Nike Cross Country National New York Regional Meet in 2012.

Binghamton has now recruited seven New York State distance event champions during its Division I era. At the 2011 NYS Indoor Meet, current sophomores Jesse Garn and Josh Miller won the boys’ 1,000 and 600 respectively. Jeff Martinez won the 3,200 at the 2009 NYS Outdoor Championships, Erik van Ingen won the 800 at the 2007 outdoor meet and Michael Schieck was first in the 1,000 at the 2008 indoor championships.

VESTAL, N.Y.—After yet another championship season that culminated with an NCAA berth, Binghamton men’s tennis has earned a top-10 regional ranking.

The Bearcats were positioned ninth in the year-end ITA Northeast Rankings. It’s the fifth consecutive year that BU has received a top-10 spot. The first eight team positions were held down by members of the Ivy League, headed by top-ranked Harvard.

Additionally, freshman sensation Sid Hazarika was ranked 13th in singles in the Northeast. Hazarika, the region’s Rookie of the Year, put together an exceptional spring season after coming to campus in January. He went 21-4 in singles primarily at the No. 1 position. Hazarika was named the America East Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. He is the top freshman in the regional rankings, which are predominantly held by seniors.

Adam Cohen, the ITA Northeast Coach of the Year, led the Bearcats to a 16-win campaign that produced the program’s sixth straight America East crown. The team then capped its spring with a trip to Athens, Ga. and an NCAA first-round match against the No. 2 Bulldogs.

2013 Schedule

Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton women’s soccer released ts 2013 season on Friday and the Bearcats will open their 17-game slate on August 25.

Head coach Sarah McClellan‘s team will start its schedule on the road at Siena. That away contest is the first of three straight to begin the fall campaign. The Bearcats will play nine non-conference games before beginning its eight-game America East slate in late September.

The schedule features five games against teams from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), two Patriot League opponents, one BIG EAST and one Ivy League foe. Among the conference games is a first Division I meeting with new member UMass Lowell.

“We are very excited about this year’s schedule,” McClellan said. “It’s competitive and our non-conference games will get us ready for the America East Conference season.”

After the Siena opener on August 25, BU will continue to work its way through the MAAC with away games at Manhattan (Aug. 30) and Iona (Sept. 1). Binghamton will then welcome Patriot League member Lafayette to the Bearcats Sports Complex for the team’s home opener on September 6. Two days later, BU will host Niagara before starting a busy three-games-in-six-days stretch that includes an away game at first-year BIG EAST member Temple (Sept. 13), a tough home test against perennial MAAC frontrunner Marist (Sept. 15) and an away tilt at nearby Cornell (Sept. 18). A Monday night game at Army (Sept. 23) finishes up the non-conference portion of the schedule.

“We have several challenging opponents for our team to learn from,” McClellan said. “There are teams we haven’t seen in a while like Manhattan, Iona, Lafayette and Army. We will be tested at Temple and it will be nice to continue our rivalry with Cornell.

“We start off on the road for our first three games and I think this will be a great way to grow and develop as a team right from the get-go.”

The eight-game conference slate begins September 29 at New Hampshire. This year, the Bearcats will host UMBC (Oct. 3), Hartford (Oct. 17), Stony Brook (Oct. 20) and Vermont (Oct. 27) for its four designated home league games. Playing the two 2012 America East finalists at home will be important, as will having the regular-season finale (vs. Vermont) at the Complex.

The 2013 Bearcats will be aiming to qualify for the America East tournament for the eighth time in 10 years. Coming off a productive spring season, McClellan is excited about her team’s chances.

“The spring team showed a lot of development and had a very strong and focused spring season,” she said. “We’re excited to build on the momentum we gained in the spring and look to compete and perform at an even higher level this fall season.”

The team will report to campus in early August.

Hughes earns America East Men’s Sportsmanship Award

America East Release

VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior back Robbie Hughes has been named the male recipient of the 2012-13 America East Sportsmanship Award. The announcement was made at the conference’s annual awards dinner on Tuesday night in Portland, Maine.

To be nominated for the America East Sportsmanship Award, an individual or team must have demonstrated consistently the values of caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity and responsibility in his or her daily participation in intercollegiate athletics. Hughes is now automatically eligible for the NCAA Sportsmanship Award, which the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct will determine in July.

Hughes transferred to Binghamton from Syracuse prior to the 2012 season. He was a starting back and a team leader from the start of preseason.

Hughes led by example with his committed, outspoken personality, which compelled him to pursue good sportsmanship on the field. In his second game with the Bearcats, Hughes was faced with the difficult task with facing his former team. He met the situation with professionalism, greeting his former teammates in a gentlemanly manner while playing his heart out for his new team.

Hughes’ leadership continued to grow during the season and showed with the way he handled his teammates. Hughes paid close attention to the attitudes of each of the members of the team and was able to diffuse several situations.

“What a terrific honor for Robbie to receive this award,” head coach Paul Marco said. “He is a fierce competitor who has tremendous respect for the game and for our opponents.”

Hughes is the second America East Sportsmanship winner from Binghamton since the award was established in 2006. Rachel Laws of the women’s basketball team was the female winner for that inaugural year.

Women’s soccer receives elite NCAA recognition

NCAA Release

Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton women’s soccer has received the highest academic honor from the NCAA, the association announced on Wednesday. The program earned an Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award for the 2011-12 year. The honor is reserved for teams whose multi-year APR is in the top 10 percent across the country within their sport. The team posted an APR score of 997 (out of 1000) during 2011-12.

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-2012 academic years.

“What a tremendous honor for our program,” head coach Sarah McClellan said. “It’s a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes and the strong academic commitment we have at Binghamton.  We truly want our student-athletes to strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom.”

In addition to the NCAA honors, the women’s soccer team had a 3.48 GPA in the 2012 spring semester and earned the department’s Academic Cup, given to the team that holds the highest GPA at Binghamton. The program has eclipsed a 3.0 GPA for 10 straight years.

PING ALL-REGION RELEASE

Contact: Mike Porter (sports1@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, NY—For the second straight year, Binghamton junior golfer Bryce Edmister has been named to the PING All-Region team. PING honored 155 Division I golfers nationally as Edmister joined 24 other student-athletes in the Northeast region. He becomes the first Binghamton golfer to earn back-to-back honors since 2010-11 (Jake Katz).

The junior lefty finished top-20 or better in eight of the 11 tournaments he entered this season; highlighted by a team-high six top-10 finishes. In the fall, he garnered a pair of runner up finishes in consecutive events at the BU Invitational and Philadelphia Big-5 Invite. Edmister shot par or lower in six rounds on his way to a team leading 74.5 scoring average. Edmister joins just one other player from the America Sky conference (Evan Russell, Hartford) on the PING All-Region team.

“Making All-Region for the second year in a row is quite an accomplishment,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “With a lot of hard work, Bryce has established himself as a high caliber player in our region and helped earn the respect of our program across the Northeast.”

Just like he did a season ago, Edmister was heavily relied upon in this his junior season. His scorecard was counted 25-of-27 times in 2012-13 as he guided the Bearcats to three team tournament titles. At this year’s annual department awards show, he was honored with his second straight team MVP award.

Seven other Binghamton players in their Division-I history have been named to the PING All-Northeast Region. They are Adam Fuchs (2002-2003), Joe Kunz (2003-04), Keith Hendrickson (2003-04), Jeff Wolniewicz (2004-07), Kevin Crawford (2006), Zach Vinal (2007-08), Jake Katz (2010-11).

Johnston and Aloizos Selected For NCAA Career in Sports Forum

Contact: Terrence Lollie (tlollie@binghamton.edu)

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA and its Leadership Development Department announced the list of 300 student-athletes that will participate in the Career in Sports Forum (CSF) and recent graduate Taylor Johnston and senior-to-be Kyra Aloizos were among them. The forum, which provides education on career development and potential career opportunities, will take place June 8-11 in Indianapolis.

“We are extremely excited for both Taylor and Kyra to have been selected as participants for this year’s NCAA Career in Sports Forum,” Associate Director of Athletics for Student Services Ed Scott said. “Having facilitated the forum for two years, I know first-hand how valuable this experience will be for both of these talented student-athletes. Their selection to the Career in Sports Forum demonstrates the high caliber student-athletes that Binghamton University recruits.”

Johnston, a four-year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team, recently graduated in May with a degree in economics and is now enrolled in Binghamton’s MBA program. Aloizos, a member of the women’s basketball team, is a dual English and studio art major and will conclude her undergraduate work next year.

A committee of administrators from member institutions, conference offices and affiliate member organizations decided on the final group which encompasses student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III. Johnston and Aloizos were selected from a pool of over 1,000 nominations and more than 700 applicants, becoming the second and third Binghamton student-athletes to participate in the four-day event. In 2011, former volleyball player Julie Chambers enjoyed the opportunity to explore and be educated on careers in sports, with a primary focus on intercollegiate athletics.

The CSF brings career leaders together to discuss their professional career paths and to enlighten student-athletes on career choices and future decision they’ll need to consider. Some of the session topics include discussion on skills sets needed to perform at the highest level, non-traditional careers in athletics, best practices in athletics administration, personal and professional branding, resources for applying to graduate school and human resources hiring processes.

The dual track forum has attracted past presenters like former University of Notre Dame and University of Washington head football coach Tyrone Willingham and ESPN Columnist/Television personality Jemele Hill. Student-athletes can either be educated on a coaching or administrator track.

Johnston and Aloizos are continuing a lineage of Binghamton representatives at the national and regional Career in Sports Forums. Associate Director of Athletics for Student Services Ed Scott was a facilitator at the forum in 2010 and 2011, while Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Development Linda Reynolds participated in the regional forum in Pittsburgh in the fall of 2011. Also attending the regional forum with Reynolds were Binghamton graduates Cazal Arnett and Chris Veney.

RALEIGH, N.C. – RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 23 Ole Miss snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the seventh inning and the SEC-member Rebels (38-23) went on to beat Binghamton 8-4 win in an NCAA elimination game at the Raleigh Regional. The America East champion Bearcats (30-25), who played host and seventh-ranked NC State tight in an opening-round loss, concluded their third 30-win season in the last seven years.

After Binghamton tied the game against All-American pitcher Bobby Wahl (10-0) with a run in the bottom of the sixth, Ole Miss responded with two runs on three singles and a stolen base in the pivotal seventh. The Rebels, making their 18th NCAA appearance, then broke the game open with four runs in the eighth inning – the final two unearned after an infield error. Binghamton, which nearly matched their nationally-ranked foe in hits (13-10), completed the scoring with two unearned runs in the eighth.

The loss overshadowed a gutsy performance from senior starter Jake Lambert (7-3), who went 6.1 innings and kept the Rebels off balance with eight strikeouts and no walks. After giving up two runs in the first frame, Lambert pitched five scoreless until running out of gas in the seventh.

Even after falling behind 4-2, BU didn’t go away quietly, putting two runners on in the bottom of the seventh to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Sophomore outfielder Zach Blanden continued his exceptional showing at the Regional with a one-out single. After a lineout to second, Thomas walked, sending up clean-up hitter Nevares, who flew out to center to end the threat.

But the wheels came off in the eighth as Ole Miss sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs on just two hits.

The Bearcats still kept grinding in the eighth inning, loading the bases with no out and scoring two unearned runs to tighten the score and bring the tying run to the on-deck circle. One of the team’s two hits in the inning came off the bat of Blanden, who finished off an incredible two-game regional with his fourth hit of the game and seventh of the tournament. The Bearcats brought seven men to the plate but stranded two with a called third strike to end their final threat.

The Rebels struck for two runs in the first inning, cashing in on three singles and a Lambert wild pitch. Lambert fanned two in the frame, including the final batter with a runner on base. The runs snapped a 23-inning streak spanning five starts when he didn’t allow an earned run.

Blanden took the first pitch he saw from Wahl, the ERA leader in the powerful SEC (1.99) and sent it past the bag at first for a leadoff single. But back-to-back fielder’s choice groundouts and an infield pop-up left one stranded in the first.

Lambert began to settle in after the first, and he got out of a two-on, no-out jam in the third with some exceptional pitching. With runners on second and third, Lambert got back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to escape unscathed. Lambert struck out seven in the first four innings.

After stranding two runners in the second, BU got on the board in the third. Blanden led off with a ground rule double just inside the right field line. Two batters later, leading hitter Jake Thomas came through with an RBI single to center, plating Blanden and cutting BU’s deficit in half, 2-1.

Much like Friday’s opener, BU put runners on base early but lacked the timely hit. The team’s leadoff hitter reached in each of the first four innings but BU left five stranded in that stretch and 10 for the game.
Thomas and sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella teamed up to end the Ole Miss fifth inning with a flare. The Rebels used a two-out single and stolen base to put a runner on second before Thomas charged to field the ensuing single to left and fired a bullet to the plate, where Pancerella applied the tag to keep the score at 2-1.

After Lambert set down the side in order in the sixth, Nevares opened the bottom of the frame with a sharp single through the left side on a 3-2 pitch. Junior Shaun McGraw dropped down a good sacrifice bunt and classmate Brian Ruby followed with a single to shallow center, putting runners on first and third. Senior DH Jordon Smucker hit a two-strike pitch to left center, scoring Nevares with the sacrifice fly and tying the game at 2-2.

NOTES
Blanden went 7-for-9 in the two games and was selected to the all-region team … Thomas threw out two baserunners from left field – one at the plate in the fifth inning and another at second in the ninth … Pancerella threw out a baserunner in the ninth for his third caught stealing of the regional … Binghamton collected 18 hits in its two games at the regional and its pitchers fanned 16 batters ... The Bearcats were playing in the NCAA Regional for the second time in five years - both times in the state of North Carolina … Binghamton is slated to return all nine position players who led the team’s run to the America East championship.

The hosts withstood a solid showing from the Bearcats, who strung together eight hits and came within a showcase diving catch of grabbing a lead midway through the game. Binghamton put its leadoff runner on base in six of the first seven innings and just lacked a few two-out hits. The Bearcats stranded seven in the first seven innings and had another baserunner thrown out trying to steal home. The Bearcats had eight of their first 21 batters reach base but had 12 of their final 14 retired to end the game.

Junior starter Jack Rogalla (5-5) went 6 2/3 innings and scattered eight hits and four runs. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter before giving way to freshman Jake Cryts, who went the final 1 1/3.

“I’m very proud of our guys and the way we competed tonight against an outstanding North Carolina State ballclub that arguably could’ve been a national seed,” head coach Tim Sinicki said. “I thought our guys looked comfortable out there and we challenged them for the entire nine innings.”

Sophomore Zach Blanden, who went 3-for-4, started the game with a single but after classmate Jake Thomas sent a fly ball to the warning track in right, Blanden was forced out at second to end the first. Blanden punchd a 2-2 pitch to right field for BU’s first hit. After a strikeout, Thomas just missed sending it out of the park, jumping on an off-speed delivery and giving it a ride to deep eight field.

The Bearcats got on the board in the second inning after putting their leadoff hitter on for the second straight frame. Junior designated hitter Shaun McGraw singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch and went to third on a single to right field by classmate Brian Ruby. McGraw then scored in a 4-6-3 double-play grounder off the bat of junior shortstop John Howell to cut BU’s deficit in half, 2-1.

Binghamton moved another runner into scoring position in the third after Blanden singled and moved to second on a groundout. Thomas hit the ball on the nose for a second-straight at-bat but his liner was caught by the Wolfpack first baseman to end the inning.

Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella threw out an NC State baserunner to end the bottom of the third. After Rogalla got the first two hitters out, an infield single put a runner on but Pancerella erased him on a great throw to the bag at second. Pancerella also threw out another baserunner in the sixth.

The Bearcats nearly plated two runs in the fourth after a leadoff single by junior second baseman Daniel Nevares and a walk by Howell. Pancerella sliced a shot that was headed toward the corner in right field before the Wolfpack outfielder made an incredible full-out, highlight-reel diving catch to end the inning and preserve a 2-1 lead.

Binghamton loaded the bases in the fifth after two hits and a walk but a fly out to left ended the threat.

Rogalla was cruising along, having retired 12 of 14 before NC State’s All-American shortstop deposited a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left to lead off the sixth and extend the hosts’ lead to 3-1. Rogalla struck out the clean-up hitter to escape further damage.

The Bearcats’ final threat was squashed in the seventh when junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz was caught trying to steal home. Bereszniewicz led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball and to third on a roundout. But with the leading hitter in the America East at the plate in Thomas (.382), Bereszniewicz tried to catch the Wolfpack pitcher napping before his delivery but was thrown out easily at the plate.

NC State added a final run in the seventh on a two-out, two-strike RBI single to left field. Cryts stranded two in the frame with a strikeout and added another inning-ending strikeout in the eighth.
Cryts struck out three and allowed just one hit in his relief showing.

Six different Bearcats registered hits, led by Blanden (3-for-4), who recorded his 19th multi-hit game of the season.

Bryan Goodman named assistant men’s basketball coach

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men’s basketball program has announced the hiring of Bryan Goodman as an assistant coach. He brings over a decade of Division I coaching and administrative experience with three successful programs.

In addition, current assistant coach Ben Luber has been elevated to the position of associate head coach. At 28, he is the youngest current men’s basketball associate head coach at the NCAA Division I level.

Goodman and Luber are part of a coaching staff that also includes second-year head coach Tommy Dempsey, assistant coach Lazarus Sims and Director of Basketball Operations Herb Courtney. Goodman replaces former assistant coach Andrew Wilson.

Goodman has been the Associate Head Coach at CSU-Bakersfield the past two seasons. While there, he was actively involved in a program that recorded its first winning season at the Division I level in 2011-12 and earned a bid to the post-season CIT.

Prior to his stint at Cal-State Bakersfield, Goodman was at Oklahoma for six seasons. He was the Director of Basketball Operations from 2006-10 and was an assistant coach during the 2010-11 campaign. The Sooners advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. While at Oklahoma, Goodman helped coach current NBA standout Blake Griffin.

From 2000-06, Goodman was an assistant coach at Bucknell University. The Bison won the Patriot League title in 2005 and 2006 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006.

A 1996 graduate of Barat College, Goodman got his start in coaching at his alma mater as an assistant coach from 1996-98. He then became an assistant coach at Susquehanna University from 1998-00. It was in his second year at Susquehanna that Dempsey was also an assistant coach on the staff.

“I am excited that Bryan is coming to Binghamton,” Dempsey said. “We coached together as young assistants and we have remained close for many years. He is a talented coach and he has helped build successful programs in his career. Bryan will be a great addition to our staff as we continue to grow our program.”

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball learned its draw in the NCAA Regional Monday afternoon and the America East champion Bearcats will be headed to Raleigh, N.C. and will face ninth-ranked NC State (44-14) in the opening game Friday night. The other two teams at the double-elimination regional are 21st-ranked Ole Miss (37-22) and Colonial Athletic Association member William & Mary (37-22).

“We knew whoever we would face would be a good challenge,” 21st-year head coach Tim Sinicki said. “NC State has had a good program for years and they play in one of the premier conferences in the country. They are a host school out of the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) ... that’s really all you need to know. But we had a great week of baseball and feel good about who we are. This team never gives up and feels it can hang with anyone. The way we battled through the conditions and won the conference tournament ... that can have momentum as we move forward. We’re excited and ready for the challenge.”

The Bearcats (30-23) captured the program’s second conference title in the last five years with a 4-0 win over top-seeded Maine in Sunday’s deciding game of the America East championship. Binghamton went 3-1 at the tournament, which began in Lowell, Mass. and ended in Kingston, R.I.

With Sunday’s win, BU reached the 30-win plateau for the third time in the last seven years.

Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, May 31, to Monday, June 3 (if necessary). Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on www.NCAA.com/cws, Monday, June 3 at approximately 11 p.m. (ET).

KINGSTON, R.I.—Senior ace and tournament MVP Jake Lambert fired eight shutout innings and Binghamton (30-23) defeated Maine (37-22) 4-0 in the deciding game of the America East Championship at Bill Beck Field on the campus of University of Rhode Island. The Bearcats won their second conference title in five years and will advance to the NCAA tournament, which begins on Friday. The NCAA will release its 64-team bracket Monday at noon on ESPNU and the team will gather to watch the announcement in the Events Center.

Lambert, working on three days rest after his two-hit shutout in the tournament opener on Wednesday, was brilliant, logging 120 pitches and scattering five hits before turning it over to BU’s bullpen, which sidestepped a dicey ninth to preserve the win. Lambert (7-2) struck out seven and walked one and was an easy choice for MVP honors after pitching 17 scoreless innings in two starts.

The Black Bears brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth before sophomore reliever Mike Urbanski got a huge swinging strikeout and a line-out to center to close it. It was Urbanski’s second save of the season.

Binghamton scored one run in the first, third, sixth and ninth innings and outhit Maine 11-6.

For the second straight game, Maine rolled out an all-conference starter on just one day’s rest and BU jumped out of the gate with a run in the top of the first frame. Leadoff hitter Zach Blanden worked a 3-2 walk and went to second on a one-out groundout. With two outs, junior second baseman Daniel Nevares pulled a single through the left side and after Maine’s shortstop grabbed it, Blanden caught him by surprise as he rounded third and charged toward home and the throw to the plate was up the first base line.

In the third inning, BU struck again with a run on two hits and a walk. Freshman third baseman David Schanz drilled a one-out stand-up double into the left field corner and sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas was walked, putting runners on first and second. Nevares flied out to center but with two out, McGraw laced the first pitch he saw through the left side scoring a sliding Schanz with BU’s second run.

The Bearcats put runners on base in every inning and came within a hit or two of blowing it open early.

In the sixth, BU took advantage of back-to-back hit batters to open the frame. In an an apparent sacrifice situation and with Maine infielders charging, Pancerella slashed an RBI single through the right side scoring Ruby to make it 3-0. The Bearcats had runners on second and third with one out but couldn’t do further damage.

Lambert retired the side on strikeouts in the first, working around an infield single. He then retired the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings and sent down 10 straight before Maine led off the bottom of the fifth with a soft single through the right side. A great stab by Schanz at third started a 5-4-3 double play to get BU out of the fifth and then Lambert stranded a runner at second in the bottom of the frame with his seventh strikeout of the game.

Schanz did it again in the seventh, smothering a short-hop and starting another 5-4-3 twin killing. Earlier in the inning, Nevares charged a slow roller and made a great glove-flip to get the leadoff hitter.

Binghamton added a final run in the ninth inning for more breathing room. With two outs, Thomas doubled over the bag at third and Nevares delivered an RBI single just over the glove of the Maine second baseman.

Schanz and Nevares joined Lambert and McGraw on the all-championship team. McGraw (2-for-5, RBI) had a team-high eight hits in the tournament and Schanz (7 hits) and Nevares (2 RBI) played outstanding defense.

Binghamton’s defense, which entered the tournament with the highest fielding percentage, committed just one error in four tournament games - and that was from the pitcher’s spot.

NOTES
The win allowed BU to reach the 30-win mark for third time in last five years ... the odd weather continued on Sunday with high winds (25+ MPH) mixing with alternating sideways rain and sunshine. The scene was similar to the quirky circumstance in 2009 when weather delays, excess water (rain and sprinklers) and late nights came to define BU’s first conference title… The tournament began in Lowell on Wednesday and featured a suspended game, another soaked game that easily could’ve been suspended and a canceled game. Binghamton and Maine made the 90-minute drive from Lowell to Kingston, R.I. to find both a suitable field and better weather forecast. They barely got the latter requirement as this game had to be halted - albeit briefly - after the driving rain made it difficult to see in the early innings.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore middle distance runner Jesse Garn placed 13th overall in the final round of the men’s 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening. The three-day event is being hosted by North Carolina A&T.

Running in the faster of the two heats, Garn was eighth with a season-best time of 3:43.98. The top five finishers in each of the two heats, plus the next two fastest times advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held at Oregon June 5-8. With the fastest time in the second heat only being 3:47.72, the sixth and seventh-place finishers from Garn’s heat got the final two spots for the NCAA.

The overall first-place finisher was Jeremy Rae of Notre Dame, who clocked a time of 3:39.92. The seventh-place time of 3:42.91 was turned in by Isaac Wendland of Liberty. Of the 12 runners who advanced to the NCAA Championships, only two of them were underclassman.

Garn had been seeded 19th coming into the meet.

This marks the second consecutive year Garn has advanced to the finals of an event at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Last year, he posted the seventh-fastest preliminary time in the men’s 800 but settled for 23rd place in the finals.

LOWELL, Mass.—After conceding to the poor weather in Lowell, Binghamton baseball (29-23) and Maine (37-21) will instead travel 90 minutes south to Kingston, R.I. and play the America East championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday on the campus of University of Rhode Island (Bill Beck Field).

The deciding game of the championship required a change in venues after unrelenting two-day rain made the conditions at LeLacheur Park unplayable. The Bearcats were at the ballpark at noon on Saturday and idled in the clubhouse for two hours while officials made the determination and scheduled an alternate site. After a flurry of phone calls to secure last-minute hotels and alter travel and meal plans, BU is now en route to “The Ocean State,” where they will get in a workout Saturday night and prepare for the winner-take-all game.

Maine forced the tournament’s seventh and deciding game with a 6-1 win over BU Friday night. The Bearcats had opened the championship with back-to-back wins, including a 10-2 win over the Black Bears. The teams, in essence, will play a rubber game to determine the conference champion and NCAA representative.

LOWELL, Mass.—Top-seeded Maine (37-21) scored twice in each of the first two innings and went on to a 6-1 win over second-seeded Binghamton (29-23) in the America East tournament Friday night at soggy LeLacheur Park. The win forced a one-game championship matchup between the two teams, slated for 3 p.m. Saturday with an NCAA berth in the balance. The Bearcats could have captured the title with a victory after starting out the tournament with back-to-back wins. Instead they will look for the program’s second title in five years as the teams play a de facto rubber game in their tournament series.

After plating 19 runs in its first two tournament games, BU’s offense was held in check, though the team hits (11-8 Maine) were closer than the final score would indicate. The Bearcats stranded 10 in the game.

Maine sent out America East Pitcher of the Year Tommy Lawrence on one day’s rest after his 100+ pitch, nine-inning complete game on Wednesday but it was BU’s normally-sound defense that struggled against the conditions Friday night. An error led to a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and several outfield miscues were equally costly as a strong wind and hard rain gave both teams fits.

The Bearcats put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but instead Maine capitalized early.

Maine put three straight balls in play in the first inning and cashed in with two infield singles and a bunt that BU pitcher Jay Lynch threw away trying to get the force at third. The resulting error, BU’s first of the tournament, gave Maine a 1-0 lead. A two-strike RBI single just inside the bag at first brought in a second run and gave the Black Bears a 2-0 first-inning lead. The Black Bears kept up the pressure in the second, using a leadoff double, sacrifice and squeeze bunt to extend their lead to 3-0. A two-out RBI triple over the head of sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden made it 4-0.

With the infield showing puddles amid unrelenting rain, BU put two more runners on in the fifth as freshman third baseman David Schanz and sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas reached on singles. After a strikeout, junior DH Shaun McGraw drew a walk, loading the bases with two out. But Lawrence got a groundout to end the threat as the Bearcats saw their left-on-base total swell to nine.

The game was halted moments later with one out in the bottom of the fifth after another routine pop-up dropped in for a weather-aided hit. After a 36-minute delay, Maine tacked on a sixth run on a two-out RBI double that sailed over the head of junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz.

Binghamton got on the board with a run in the sixth but an inning-ending double play took the fizz out of a would-be rally. Junior shortstop John Howell singled, sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella walked and both runners moved up on a groundout. Blanden drove in Howell with a single through the left side. But after Lawrence was removed (119 pitches, 223 in 3 days), Maine got a comebacker and ensuing 1-6-3 double play.

Lynch gave a solid performance with 8.0 innings. He scattered 11 hits and four earned runs, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. Lynch (6-5) returned to the hill after the rain delay and his 117-pitch outing kept BU’s bullpen intact for Saturdays finale.

Thomas went 2-for-3 and Schanz went 2-for-5 to pace the offense.

NOTES
Schanz had a beautiful over-the-railing grab of a foul ball in the fourth inning and Howell had a pair of dive-and-throw-out plays up the middle to highlight the eighth inning.

Women’s Lacrosse Teams Up With Magic Paintbrush Project

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton University athletics and the Magic Paintbrush Project combined forces once again to provide an elementary school class with a day of fun and excitement through the creative and innovative ‘Paint with the Players’ workshop. The women’s lacrosse team visited the special education class of the displaced Owego Elementary at Union-Endicott’s Thomas J. Watson elementary school during the final week of classes.

Spearheaded by senior captain Kristin Pennino, who interned with the Magic Paintbrush Project, the women’s lacrosse team was determined to find a class to conduct a ‘Paint with the Players’ workshop with before the semester was over. When Magic Paintbrush Workshop Coordinator Maureen Yacyncych suggested Trish O’Neill’s special education class at Owego Elementary, who was displaced because of the 2011 flood, a perfect match was created.

“The Magic Paintbrush Project is something that we’ve tried to stay involved with,” interim head coach Stephanie Allen said. “It’s been really close to Kristin’s heart and ours as well, so given the opportunity to come out here before the semester ended was pretty exciting.”

Typically, the two groups would travel to the Magic Paintbrush Project’s home office inside the Oakdale Mall in nearby Johnson City. However, since the 2011 flood that devastated the Southern Tier, Owego Elementary has called Thomas J. Watson home for the past two school years and with a tight bus schedule it made more sense for the players and the Project to go to the students.

“To have the two groups come out to the school, which isn’t typical, was awesome,” Owego Elementary special education teacher Trish O’Neill said. “Just for the kids to talk to new faces and share their stories in a fun and creative way is incredible. We’ve done the workshop the past couple years and for the kids to get attention from Division I student-athletes is really something else.”

The women’s lacrosse team and the Magic Paintbrush Project held a pair of sessions inside Owego’s special education classroom for about 20 students. Players and students teamed up and worked on their communication and social skills while telling stories and squirting paint. By the end, the majority of the participants were covered in paint, which was easily cleaned off the tile floor by both groups.

“I love seeing my team interacting with the kids and working together,” Pennino said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with the Magic Paintbrush Project because it’s such a positive atmosphere…and it’s always a really fun time.”

The Magic Paintbrush Project provides facilitated workshops for thousands of individuals, infants through geriatrics, diagnosed with a developmental disability. The Project presents unique programs that are designed to meet the needs and goals of the individuals and their families and caregivers. The Project serves an average of 4,500 participants each year throughout the Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania, including 16 school districts in New York.

Recap of Wednesday's win over Albany

Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

LOWELL, Mass.—After waiting more than 15 hours, Binghamton baseball (29-22) closed out top-seeded Maine (35-21) 10-2 to advance to the America East championship game. The Bearcats, 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament, need one more win to earn the program’s second-ever conference title and accompanying NCAA berth. Binghamton will face Maine again at 8 p.m. Friday night. The Black Bears held off Stony Brook 3-1 in Friday’s elimination game. If Maine beats BU, the “if necessary” game would be played on Saturday.

The Bearcats led 8-2 when Thursday night’s game was suspended due to rain just before midnight. The two teams returned to the field Friday at 2 p.m. and BU reliever Greg Ostner finished what Jack Rogalla (W, 5-4) had started 15 hours earlier. Ostner, a sophomore, stranded two Maine runners in the top of the eighth and the Bearcats tacked on their final two runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits. Ostner used a double-play grounder to end the game.

Spanning the two days, BU collected 16 hits and scored the final 10 runs of the game against a Black Bears team that had only surrendered double-digit runs twice in its previous 55 games. Meanwhile, Binghamton’s pitching has allowed just two runs in 18 innings of tournament play (1.00 ERA).

On Thursday night, after the start time was delayed until 9 p.m. when an hour rain delay slowed the opening game, the teams played through some misty rain in the middle innings before it got heavier in the sixth. The game was halted at 11:12 p.m. with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a BU runner on second. It was called 33 minutes later.

The suspension was the worst case scenario for the Bearcats, who were six outs away from closing out the win but scored three runs in the seventh and were still batting in support of Rogalla, who had put up six straight scoreless frames. Rogalla, who had already topped the 100-pitch mark, will likely be finished for the tournament. Binghamton collected 12 hits at the plate, including three in the seventh before the game was halted.

Binghamton snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth - all after two were out. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella laced a single to center and junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz was issued a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden then drilled an 0-1 pitch to the wall in left center, scoring both runners. Freshman third baseman David Schanz followed with a grounder to short that the Maine shortstop charged but couldn’t field cleanly and the error brought around Blanden from second and made it 5-2.

The Bearcats tacked on three more runs - all with clutch two-out hitting. Junior DH Shaun McGraw led off with a single and after a walk to junior first baseman Brian Ruby, junior shortstop John Howell moved them up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch made it 6-2 and B&B combo of Bereszniewicz and Blanden struck again with run-scoring hits. Bereszniewicz lashed an RBI single through the left side to push BU’s lead to 7-2 and Blanden followed with an RBI double into the right field corner.

Through the first seven innings, the Bearcats hit 7-of-14 with two outs.

Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a one-out two-run homer over the right field wall.

The Bearcats cut their margin in half in the second inning. Ruby led off with a single into right field. After a strikeout and groundout moved Ruby to second, Bereszniewicz drilled a hard shot just past the Black Bears’ second baseman and Ruby came around to score on the RBI single.

One inning later, BU tied it with two hits. Schanz opened with a single to center and went to third on a single by sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares then pushed a two-strike grounder to the right side, enabling Schanz to score and even the score at 2-2.

Schanz made a stellar play to end the top of the fourth. After Maine used a dribbler to the pitcher to put a runner on first with one out, Schanz gobbled up a sizzling drive to his left and started a 5-4-3 double play.

Maine loaded the bases in the top of the fifth on two singles and a walk, but Rogalla got leading hitter Troy Black to pop out to short to strand three. Earlier in the inning, Schanz charged a bunt and made a nice play to get the second out. One inning later as a steady rain began to fall, Rogalla gave up a one-out double to the wall but got a shallow fly to center and a strikeout to escape damage.

Rogalla stranded another runner in the seventh, thanks in part to a pair of defensive gems. Howell ranged up the middle to snare a hard grounder and throw out the Maine hitter to open the inning. After a walk, Schanz stopped threw out the runner at second from his knees for the second out. And then after Rogalla thought he had the inning-ending fly out, a balk was called and the runner was advanced to second. But on his 100th pitch of the game, Rogalla got the groundout as Schanz fielded a well-hit grounder and made the accurate throw across the diamond.

With the suspension, Rogalla’s line was complete. He allowed six hits and two runs, struck out five and walked two. He retired Maine in order in the second and third innings, and got a double play to get out of the fourth unscathed. Rogalla scattered two hits in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Blanden went 2-for-5 with three RBI, Schanz and Thomas had three hits apiece and Bereszniewicz went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. McGraw and Ruby also had two hits apiece.

NOTES
The team that starts 2-0 has won the last 11 America East titles… The only other time BU started 2-0 was the 2009 championship, which the top-seeded Bearcats won at Union-Endicott High School… Only twice since 2002 has the emerging team from the loser’s bracket forced an “if necessary” final game and each time the winner’s bracket team has prevailed… Senior RHP Jay Lynch will start the 8 p.m. championship game.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore middle distance runner Jesse Garn has advanced to the final round of the men’s 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships on Thursday evening. The three-day meet is being hosted by North Carolina A&T.

Entered in the first of four 12-runner heats, Garn was fourth in a time of 3:50.36. The top five finishers in each heat, plus the next four fastest times, advanced to Saturday’s final round, which starts at 6:45 p.m.

Robby Creese of Penn State won Garn’s heat in a time of 3:49.43. The top overall time in the event was 3:43.33, which was turned in by Jeremy Rae of Notre Dame.

Based on his time and place, Garn finished the preliminary round ranked No. 16 overall. He entered the meet seeded No. 19.

There will be two heats of 12 runners in Saturday’s final round. The top four finishers in each heat, plus the next four fastest times, advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held at Oregon. Also advancing to the NCAA outdoor meet will be the top 12 finishers from the West Regional Meet, which is currently taking placing at Texas.

This marks the second consecutive year Garn has advanced to the finals of an event at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Last year, he posted the seventh-fastest preliminary time in the men’s 800 but settled for 23rd place in the finals.

Also on Thursday, senior sprinter Jessica Hennig was seventh in her heat of the women’s 400 (55.40). She was ranked No. 43 in the final standings. Heading into the meet, Hennig was ranked No. 46. This marked her first time competing at the NCAA East Regional Meet.

VESTAL, NY—Binghamton University men’s lacrosse player Tyler Perrelle has been selected to compete in the prestigious United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/LaxWorld North-South Game. Perrelle, a senior midfielder from Mahopac, NY, joins 2012 graduate Ben Waldron as the only other BU player to have participated in this senior showcase event. Perrelle will represent the North All-Stars this Friday, May 24 at Edith Robb Dixon Field on the campus of Cabrini College.

The event is in its 72nd year of existence, and will lead up to a big weekend in collegiate lacrosse, beginning with the National Semifinals held in Philadelphia on Saturday. The games feature the top senior lacrosse talent across the country; spanning all three collegiate divisions. Perrelle will line up with and against some of the top lacrosse talent in Division I lacrosse and that is a feat he is certainly proud of.

“It’s a great honor to be selected to the North-South Game,” Perrelle said. “I’m thankful I get a chance to end my career in a fun way, representing Binghamton University, my teammates and coaches at this all-star game. I look forward to competing with and against some of the best players in Division I lacrosse.”

The four-year letterwinner played an integral role as a midfielder with the Bearcats. He holds the program record for assists with 55 and was the first player to eclipse the 100-point mark in this his senior campaign. His name is plastered across nearly all the program charts, including shots (2nd), points (2nd), games played (T-4th) and goals (6th).  Since arriving here in 2009, Perrelle has seen action in each and every game.

“It’s a deserving honor and also an exciting way to cap his career,” head coach Scott Nelson said. “Tyler’s a heck of a lacrosse player who plays the game the right way. Not only is he a gifted lacrosse player, but he’s a terrific kid. He will represent Binghamton University well amongst the nation’s elite senior lacrosse class.”

Tyler played in 14 games in 2013, dishing out the second most assists on the team with 11. He scored nine goals, including the game-winner on the road at Delaware back on March 9. A senior captain, Perrelle tallied a point in 11 out of 14 contests.

A year ago, Perrelle won team MVP honors after a 42-point season from the midfield. He is one of four players to have a 40-plus point season at Binghamton. He was an America East All-Tournament team selection in 2011 and was named to the All-Rookie team after recording 10 goals and 11 assists as a newcomer in 2010.

“My four years at Binghamton have really shaped me into not only a better overall lacrosse player but a better person. I couldn’t have received this accomplishment without the help of my teammates and coaches who have really helped me along the way.”

The game time is set for 5:30 pm on Friday in Radnor, PA. Tickets for the event can be purchased on site the day of the event.

LOWELL, Mass.—Binghamton baseball (28-22) scored seven unearned runs and senior starter Jake Lambert (6-2) shut down Albany with a complete-game two-hit shutout as the Bearcats advanced in the winner’s bracket of the America East tournament with a 9-0 win over the Great Danes (23-24-1) Thursday night at LeLacheur Park. Binghamton will face top-seeded Maine in Thursday night’s 8 p.m. game. The Black Bears defeated Stony Brook 7-0 in the opening game of the day.

After the teams waited out a 54-minute rain delay to start, Albany faltered in the field and the Bearcats took advantage of seven errors to gain a postseason win over their SUNY rivals for a second straight year. While the Great Danes struggled on the slick field, BU played an error-free game.

In one of the finest postseason pitching performances in school history, Lambert surrendered two infield hits and struck out six in the complete game - the first time he has gone 9.0 innings in his two-year BU career. Lambert retired the side in order in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings and got a double play in the ninth before a fly ball to center finished off his gem.

The Bearcats opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second inning. Junior DH Shaun McGraw hit a one-out double just inside third base and raced around to third as the left fielder misplayed the ball. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby plated McGraw with a sacrifice fly.

One inning later, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz drew a one-out walk and after a double from sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden, Bereszniewicz scored when the Albany outfielder overran the ball.

Binghamton piled on three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings as the Great Danes compounded their trouble with five errors in the two frames. In the fourth, Blanden and freshman third baseman David Schanz were each hit by pitches with the bases loaded and those runs made it 5-0. In the fifth, McGraw notched another hit and Ruby followed with an RBI single. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella brought in the seventh run with a sacrifice fly and Ruby scored on an infield scoring error to make it 8-0.

The Bearcats put their ninth and final run on the board in the sixth. Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas was pelted in the back to start the inning and junior second baseman Daniel Nevares ripped an RBI double down the left field line.

McGraw went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Ruby drove in two and scored twice.

NOTES
The nine-run winning margin was BU’s largest since beating Albany 16-6 in the championship game of the 2009 tournament… Lambert’s two-hitter matched the fewest hits he’s allowed in two seasons. On April 20, he gave up two hits in eight innings of work against UMBC. His complete-game shutout was just the second solo shutout in BU’s eight-year America East tournament history. Mike Augliera, who pitched on the same mound with the Lowell Spinners (Red Sox Class A team) last spring, tossed a shutout to beat Maine 6-0 in the 2010 tournament. In 2008, Murphy Smith (8 inn.) and Greg Lane (1 inn.) combined for BU’s other shutout - a 4-0 win over Vermont. The Bearcats, who lead the conference in fielding percentage (.974), improved to 18-4 when committing fewer errors than their opponent… Binghamton has won seven of its last 10 games… the Bearcats won the postgame coin flip with Maine and will be the home team for Thursday night’s game.

LOWELL, Mass.—On the eve of its baseball championship, the America East unveiled its all-conference teams and Binghamton was well represented with five honorees and a league-high four academic selections. Earning accolades from the conference coaches were first-team choices Jake Thomas, Daniel Nevares, Jay Lynch and Shaun McGraw as well as second team selection Jake Lambert. Freshman David Schanz made the All-Rookie team and a quartet of Bearcats made the All-Academic Team: Thomas, Jordon Smucker, Brian Ruby and Nick Pancerella.

The four first-team selections are the most since Binghamton put five on the top team in 2010.

“It’s a well-deserved honor for all the guys,” head coach Tim Sinicki said. “I’m glad the conference coaches recognized their hard work and performance. We’re very proud of their leadership and contributions to our 2013 season. Also, to have four players selected to the All-Academic team is a testament to how well-rounded these student-athletes are. They embody all that is good about college athletics and it’s a pleasure coaching them and the rest of their teammates, who all work so hard day-in and day-out.”

Thomas, who drew strong consideration for Player of the Year in his sophomore season, was a unanimous selection at one of the three outfield spots. He currently ranks second in the entire nation in on-base percentage (.524). He also leads the America East in batting average (.374), slugging (.542) and walks (41) and is second in home runs (5) and third in both RBI (36) and runs scored (39). Thomas was an all-rookie choice in 2012 and is two hits shy of 100 midway through his collegiate career.

Nevares, a second-team all-conference pick last spring, earned the nod as the top second baseman in his junior year. Batting clean-up, Nevares ranks second in the America East in doubles (17), fifth in slugging (.462), sixth in average (.325) and seventh in RBI (30). He ranks 33rd in the country in doubles per game and is two shy of matching the school single-season record. Nevares is hitting .360 with 14 RBI in his last 14 games.

Lynch, a senior, earned his second all-conference honor after opening his career with all-rookie laurels. He was a second team choice in 2011 and this spring, was deemed one of the top-four starting pitchers. He has a team-high six wins and ranks fourth in the conference with a 2.81 ERA. He went 5-3 with a 2.28 ERA in league play and twice earned America East Pitcher of the Week accolades.

McGraw was the top pick at designated hitter after belting four home runs in the regular season. The junior outfielder/DH had eight multi-hit games and an eight-game hit streak en route to his first all-conference selection.

Lambert, the team’s No. 1 pitcher in the rotation, earned his second straight all-conference honors. He is 5-2 with a 3.59 ERA and ranks fifth in the America East in strikeouts (63). Lambert has allowed just three earned runs in his last 18 innings and compiled a pair of Pitcher of the Week accolades. He will get the ball in BU’s opener against Albany after not allowing an earned run in 11 innings of work against the Great Danes during the regular season.

Schanz was rewarded after hitting .293 (third on team) during the regular season after taking over the starting spot at third base. He is hitting .364 in his last nine games and provided the dramatics in a crucial 4-3 home win over Maine in the second-to-last weekend with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Smucker, who has played in 137 career games, paced the academic team with his third consecutive honor. The senior has a 3.42 GPA in management, leadership and consulting. Ruby, a junior first baseman, carries a 3.53 in biology. Thomas backed up his performance on the field with Dean’s List honors in the School of Management. The sophomore has a 3.35 GPA and is the only player to earn both first team all-conference and all-academic honors this year. Pancerella, BU’s starting catcher, also earned the academic team selection with a 3.60 GPA in management.

The Bearcats open the double-elimination tournament against Albany at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Holt and O'Hara's NLI Release

VESTAL, N.Y.—Eric Holt and Eileen O’Hara, each of whom has signed an NLI with the Binghamton track and cross country programs, are currently two of the top-ranked high school distance runners in the nation.

Holt, who is a senior at Carmel (N.Y.) High School, clocked a first-place time of 9:00.20 in the 3,200 at the Northern County Championships on Saturday. That is the second-fastest time this outdoor season in the state of New York and the No. 23 time in the nation.

O’Hara, who is a senior at Webster-Thomas High School, broke the Runnin’ Cadet Classic meet record with a time of 9:42.89 in the 3,000 on May 4. That is the top time in the state of New York this outdoor season as well as the seventh-fastest time in the nation.

Since signing with Binghamton in February, O’Hara placed 12th overall in the mile at the New Balance National Meet on March 10 with a time of 4:57.97. That followed a third-place finish at the New York State indoor meet in the 1,500 two weeks earlier. Her time of 4:39.38 at the state championships was the eighth-fastest time in the nation during the 2013 indoor season.

Holt, meanwhile, placed sixth overall in the boys’ two-mile run at the same New Balance National Meet. His time of 9:07.55 was the eighth-fastest time in the nation during the indoor season.

Hunsberger Selected To North-South All-Star Game

Contact: Terrence Lollie (tlollie@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Katherine Hunsberger has added yet another accolade to her unprecedented final season for the Binghamton women’s lacrosse program. Hunsberger became the first Bearcat in program history to be selected to play in the IWLCA/Under Armour North-South All-Star Game. Hunsberger will join the North All-Star team on Sunday, May 26 at Cabrini College just outside of Philadelphia.

The event, which is being held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship, is intended to highlight women’s lacrosse and its best collegiate seniors. In a year of broken records and firsts for the Binghamton women’s lacrosse program and Hunsberger, her selection to the North All-Star team is meaningful to both herself and the program.

“I would not have been selected to play with the North All-Stars without the guidance and support of my coaches and teammates, past and present. And I’m hoping that this motivates some of the younger players and displays that the Binghamton program is headed in the right direction and will continue to see success in the future.”

The Cortland, N.Y. native became the first Binghamton women’s lacrosse player to be named to the America East All-Conference First-Team after her team-high 35 goals and 76 draw controls. She also garnered her second straight appearance on the America East All-Academic Team after earning a 3.65 GPA while majoring in integrated neuroscience, another first for a Binghamton women’s lacrosse player.

“We are very excited for Katherine and the opportunity for her to be showcased in the IWLCA/Under Armour North-South All-Star game,” interim head coach Stephanie Allen said. “She works incredibly hard and because of her dedication – has been rewarded with many firsts for herself and this program.”

During her final season in a Binghamton uniform, Hunsberger set the all-time school record for draw controls (152), while breaking her own single-season mark in the same category with 76. In 2013 she also tied her own single-game draw control record of nine twice. Her 83 career goals are fifth all-time in program history.

Hunsberger started all 14 games for the Bearcats and ended the season ranked among the nation’s top 10 in draw controls. She found the back of the net in every game f 2013 and concluded her career on 17-game goal streak dating back to April 2012. The standout midfielder netted seven hat tricks in her final season including four in a row to end the year for a career total of 13.

“Katherine is eager to suit up and compete one more time amidst some of the country’s best talent.  We wish her the best of luck and are proud to have her represent Binghamton on the field one last time.”

“I was really surprised when I found out that I was selected, but definitely honored,” Hunsberger said. “Its going to be a great experience to get to play with some of our opponents’ best players and players that I have idolized for the past four years. It’s truly a privilege to be given one last chance to play with some of the nation’s top players.”

The IWLCA/Under Armour All-Star Weekend will include all-star games for all three NCAA divisions and a reception for the participants on Saturday, May 25. The game time is yet to be determined, but has been tentatively set for 1 p.m.

ALBANY, N.Y.—Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas punctuated his incredible regular season with a pair of two-run home runs to lift visiting Binghamton (27-22, 16-13 AE) to a 10-3 win over Albany (23-23-1, 16-14 AE) in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon. With the win, BU claimed regular-season runnerup honors and will carry the No. 2 seed into the America East tournament.

Thomas, the leading hitter in the America East, was walked twice but still went 3-for-3 with four RBI to pace a 13-hit BU attack. Thomas will carry a .524 on-base percentage (No. 3 in nation) into the postseason and leads the conference with his .374 average.

With the winner of the rubber game earning the No. 2 seed, the Bearcats got on the board immediately courtesy of Thomas. With one out in the first, freshman infielder David Schanz singled and Thomas followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence.

The Great Danes got one run back in the bottom of the frame after a hit batter, sacrifice and single.

But Thomas struck again in the third, following a Schanz one-out walk with another two-run blast - his team-high fifth of the season. His RBI count rose to a team-high 36 with the big day at the plate.

Ahead 4-1, BU added two more runs in the fifth inning. Junior center fielder Billy Bereszniewicz and sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden hit back-to-back singles and after a Schanz bunt moved them 90 feet up, Bereszniewicz scored on a wild pitch to push the Bearcats’ lead to 5-1. After Thomas was intentionally walked, junior third baseman Brian Ruby scored Blanden with an RBI groundout.

Binghamton put it away with four runs in the eighth inning on four hits. Thomas walked to open the inning and stole second. Ruby then hit an RBI double down the right field line, making it 7-1. Senior first baseman Jordon Smucker added a one-out RBI single and Bereszniewicz joined the barrage with a two-out, two-run double.

Albany put up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring.

Senior Jay Lynch (W, 6-4) worked four innings and allowed five hits and one run. He lowered his ERA against conference opponents to 2.28.

Freshman reliever Jake Cryts tossed three scoreless innings in relief, giving up just one hit in a strong showing. Two other BU relievers finished out the game.

Ruby went 2-for-5 with two RBI to continue his hot streak. He has seven RBI in his last 12 games. Bereszniewicz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Blanden also collected two hits. Thomas finished up league play with some big numbers: In 29 league games, he hit .416 and had a .546 on-base percentage with 18 RBI.

NOTES
Binghamton and Albany will play for the fourth time in five days when they meet in Wednesday night’s opening-round 8 p.m. matchup at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. It will be a rematch of last year’s first-round game which saw the third-seeded Bearcats post a 2-1 win over the second-seeded Great Danes. Top-seeded Maine will face defending champion Stony Brook in the 4 p.m. game. The tournament is a double-elimination format with the winner earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. The Bearcats captured the America East title in 2009 and are the only AE team to finish in the regular season top-3 in each of the last seven years.

ITA Award Winners

Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis coach Adam Cohen has been named the ITA/Wilson Northeast Region Coach of the Year after guiding his Bearcats to a sixth straight NCAA tournament berth in 2013. It’s the second time in the last four years that Cohen has earned the top honor in the 39-team region, which spans 11 different conferences.

Under Cohen’s leadership, the Bearcats (16-10) won 11 of their last 12 matches before facing No. 2 Georgia in the NCAA tournament. With a powerful recruiting class in place, Cohen put two freshmen in his top two singles positions and only had one upperclassman in his singles lineup, yet still produced 16 wins and the program’s ninth NCAA berth in the last 11 years. In 2010, Cohen was also selected by his Northeast Region peers after his Bearcats went 25-2 and were ranked as high as No. 43 in the country.

Additionally, freshman standout Sid Hazarika was selected as the ITA/Wilson Northeast Region Rookie of the Year. Hazarika put together an exceptional spring season after coming to campus in January. He went 21-4 in singles, occupying the No. 1 position, and was named the America East Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. It’s the first time that a BU player has earned the region’s top rookie honor in the program’s 12-year Division I tenure.

“I am happy for Sid to receive Rookie of the Year honors for our region,” Cohen said. “He began his career for us in the spring, which is never an easy starting point for anyone as you only have about one week of formal practice with the team and then we begin our spring season.  I had Sid play lower in the lineup at the beginning as I wanted him to get some matches under his belt to gain some confidence and get used to college tennis.  As he kept winning his matches I kept moving him up until he took over our top spot towards the end of March right before we went on spring break.  To have an overall spring season record of 21-4 is a great accomplishment and I look forward to having Sid continue to improve his level next season and the years to come here at Binghamton University.”

“Jesse has a good shot at making it to the NCAA Championships while Jessica will try to improve her school record and break 54 seconds,” Thompson said.

At the 2012 East Regional Meet, Garn had the seventh-fastest time in the 800 preliminaries (1:48.85) but dipped to 23rd in the finals (1:51.60). Earlier that season, he was third in the 1,500 at the America East Outdoor Championships.

Garn’s appearance marks the third straight year the Bearcat men’s program will have an entry in the 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Erik van Ingen, advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships in the same event the previous two years.

Hennig continues her prolific career with her first trip to the NCAA East Regional Meet. She has won three conference indoor titles in the 400 during her career and also captured the individual title at the 2012 America East Outdoor Meet.

This past weekend at the ECAC Championships, Hennig joined with juniors Kathleen Klein and Erika Kisel and sophomore Ivory Taussig to smash the Binghamton program’s 4x400 record. Their time of 3:44.26 shaved a full three seconds off the previous 2007 mark of 3:47.47.

NOTE: Hennig’s time of 54.35 at the America East Outdoor Championships is the current school record.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton baseball (26-22, 15-13 AE) split a doubleheader with host Albany (23-22-1, 16-13 AE) Friday afternoon with the Bearcats taking the opener in extra innings, 3-2 (9) and the Great Danes earning the split with a 5-4 win in the seven-inning nightcap.

The split, combined with a split in the Hartford-Stony Brook games, means that BU and Albany are assured the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds for the upcoming America East tournament, with the winner in Saturday’s rubber game taking the No. 2 spot. Regardless, the teams will now square off in the first game of the tournament next Wednesday in Lowell, Mass. It will be the second straight year the Bearcats and Great Danes will meet in the opening round.

In the opener, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off the ninth inning with a single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scampered home with the deciding run on a two-out wild pitch. Sophomore reliever Greg Ostner (W, 2-1), worked around a single in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. Ostner pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in a brilliant relief effort. He kept the Bearcats alive by inducing a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play in the eighth frame and scattered five hits in the longest outing of his career.

The Bearcats trailed 2-0 before scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings of the scheduled seven-inning game. Once the game extended to the ninth inning, Game 2 was re-set for seven innings.

Albany scored two unearned runs on just one hit in the first inning against senior starter Jake Lambert (4.0 IP, 3 hits, 0 ER), whose single and hit batter were compounded by an infield throwing error. But Lambert allowed nothing further before being removed in the fifth to keep fresh for the upcoming conference tournament.

After leaving four runners stranded in the first four innings, BU got on the board in the fifth. With two out, sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden and freshman third baseman David Schanz hit back-to-back singles and sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas plated Blanden with an RBI single up the middle. One inning later, the Bearcats evened the score with another two-out rally. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby singled with one out and went to second on a walk. With two outs, Bereszniewicz delivered an RBI single to left field, scoring Ruby.

Schanz led off the seventh with a single but was stuck on the bases - BU left 11 stranded in the game and 19 for the day.

In the eighth, Ostner allowed a leadoff single and the Great Danes had the winning run at second after a sacrifice bunt. But BU’s strategy of intentionally walking the next batter worked to perfection as Ostner got the ensuing double play to get out of the inning and set up the deciding run in BU’s next at-bat.

Bereszniewicz went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Blanden, Schanz and Ruby each went 2-for-4.

In Game 2, Albany snapped a 4-4 tie with the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning - thanks to a leadoff walk, balk and RBI single. The game featured four lead changes.

Binghamton took a 1-0 lead on a Ruby RBI single in the third before Albany scored three runs (two unearned) on three hits in the bottom of the inning. The Bearcats got one back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Mike Danaher, who was making his first appearance since March 30 after an injury sidelined him for 24 games. Then BU took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the fifth inning. Ruby ripped an RBI double down the left field line and later scored on an infield throwing error. But Albany countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at 4 and won it an inning later.

Ruby went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior first baseman Jordon Smucker went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior starter Jack Rogalla scattered seven hits and two earned runs in 5.0 innings. He struck out four and walked none in a no-decision. Sophomore reliever Mike Urbanski (L, 2-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after working the sixth inning.

NOTES
Thomas reached base five times in the two games to bump his on-base percentage up to .512, which ranks in the nation’s top-5… The winner of the Stony Brook-Hartford game on Saturday gets the final spot in the four-team championship, which will be held next Wednesday through Saturday, May 22-25, at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. That winner will play regular season champion Maine in the other first-round game on Wednesday.

Earning honors were junior Ruben Haggai and sophomores Robin Lesage, Ismael Dinia and Florian van Kann.

Haggai, the Most Outstanding Player at the championship, is a repeat selection from 2012. He went 22-9 in singles and finished the year on a 14-match win streak. Haggai holds down a 3.7 GPA in the School of Management.

Lesage ha a 3.91 GPA in management. He won 20 singles matches and added 16 doubles wins. Lesage was a first team all-conference selection playing at No. 3 singles and doubles.

Women’s Tennis Earns Pair of All-Academic Selections

Sophomores Missy Edelblum and Katya Medianik earn academic nods

Women’s Tennis Earns Pair of All-Academic Selections

Cambridge, Mass.—A pair of Binghamton sophomores have landed a spot on the America East All-Academic squad as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning. Katya Medianik, who also was a first-team singles selection, receives this academic honor in her first year eligible. Joining Medianik is fellow classmate Missy Edelblum who had a team-high 3.448 GPA in English, Literature and Rhetoric.

“Both Katya (Medianik) and Missy (Edelblum) certainly are deserving of this honor,” head coach Libby McGovern said. “They do a terrific job of balancing both their work as an athlete and as a student in the classroom.”

Medianik wrapped up her sophomore campaign with a dual record of 3-17 in singles and 4-16 in doubles all from the top of the lineup. She recorded wins at first singles over Hartford and UMBC in straight sets late in the season. In the classroom, she carries a 3.425 GPA as a English, Literature and Rhetoric major and has been a member of the America East Academic Honor Roll each and every semester at Binghamton.

Edelblum went 3-12 overall and 2-9 in dual matches playing at the back end of BU’s singles lineup. The Roslyn, NY native collected five wins playing third doubles in 2013. She has 17 career doubles wins since joining the program last season. In addition to having the team’s highest GPA, Missy was also active this school year, working for the student newspaper and television groups on campus.

Since 2006, the Bearcats have had 10 selections to the All-Academic team. Last season, ’12 graduate Marina Bykovskaya became the first BU women’s tennis player to be named to the squad three consecutive seasons (both Medianik and Edelblum have opportunity with two more years of eligibility left). All honorees on the all-academic team must accumulate a GPA of 3.30 or higher and participate in over 50 percent of the team’s contests, all the while having a strong contributing role to the team.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Maine (31-19, 18-8 AE) squandered a 5-1 lead in the late innings but batted around in the 10th and scored eight runs en route to a 13-7 win over Binghamton (25-21, 14-12 AE) in the second game of a twinbill Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The visiting Black Bears took the opener 4-3 and won two of the three games in the hotly-contested series, which featured a pair of one-run games and an extra-inning affair.

Despite the two losses, BU clinched its seventh straight postseason berth. The Bearcats assured themselves of a top-4 finish in the America East standings heading into next weekend’s three-game set at Albany. Because the two teams directly behind them in the standings (Stony Brook and Hartford) play each other in the final series, BU will maintain a higher win percentage regardless of that series outcome.

The two games on Sunday were tightly contested with Maine hanging on to beat BU in the opener and then going to extra innings to win the nightcap, which featured a combined 28 hits, 20 runs and nine pitchers. In game 2, Binghamton erased a 5-1 deficit with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to force extra innings. The Bearcats scored twice in their final at-bat and came within a foot of winning the game in the bottom of the ninth when sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas hit a liner that was snared by the Maine first baseman with the winning run set to score from third. Before that, BU tied the game on an RBI single from freshman third baseman David Schanz and a wild pitch.

But Maine sent 13 men to the plate in the 10th and rapped seven hits, including three doubles that went to the wall in dead center. Binghamton plated two in their half of the 10th on a Scott Musin double but it wasn’t enough.

A long way back in the nearly four-hour game, Maine hit back-to-back solo home runs to open up the second inning and build an early lead. Black Bears starter Shaun Coughlin limited BU to four hits - just one after the third inning - in 7.0 innings. Binghamton cut its margin in half when junior second baseman Daniel Nevares belted a solo shot over the right field wall in the bottom of the second. Nevares took the first offering and sent it over the right field wall for his second home run of the season. A weak double-play grounder ended the frame and stranded a runner.

The Black Bears countered with two more runs in the third - both scoring with two out. A walk, stolen base and hard-hit grounder that caromed off starter Jay Lynch scored the first run. Then with runners on first and third, Lynch appeared to have both runners picked off but couldn’t pull the trigger on the throw, and his ensuing 0-2 pitch turned into an RBI single and a 4-1 Maine cushion. Lynch got a groundout to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

The Bearcats threatened in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases with two out. Nevares jumped on an 0-2 pitch and came with a few feet of a grand slam when his shot carried just foul in the left field corner. Nevares then popped out to center on a 3-2 pitch to stall the threat.

Freshman Jake Cryts worked 3.2 solid innings in relief of starter Jay Lynch (4 runs in 4.1 IP) and stemmed the tide by allowing just two hits and a run. Cryts came in with a runner on second in the fifth and after a stolen base, worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. He retired seven straight and nine of his first 10 batters before a wind-aided double and single gave Maine an insurance run, up 5-1.

Binghamton plated two in the eighth courtesy of a Nevares two-run double and then forced extra innings with a dramatic ninth.

Nevares wound up 2-for-4 with three RBI. Schanz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Thomas went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the opener, Maine snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning. Number six hitter Brian Doran hit Jack Rogalla’s 2-1 offering over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season.

The Bearcats put their leadoff runner on in the bottom of the seventh when Nevares drew a walk. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt but a groundout and fly out ended the game.

Binghamton built a 3-1 lead but missed a few chances to stretch the lead in the early innings and the Black Bears scored runs in three straight frames to complete the comeback win.

The Bearcats opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Junior shortstop John Howell walked with one out and BU then strung together three straight singles. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella started by lining a 3-2 pitch into left field. With runners on first and second, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz laced a 3-2 pitch to left center, scoring Howell with the game’s first run. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden followed with an RBI single to center field. Maine avoided further damage when its right fielder made a diving catch on a sinking liner from Schanz.

The Black Bears got on the board in the fourth with a one-out double, stolen base and sacrifice fly.

But BU struck again in the bottom of the frame. Howell opened with a double just inside the bag at third. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Pancerella, Howell scored when Bereszniewicz drilled a hot shot up the middle. That hit chased Maine’s starting pitcher. Binghamton was denied more when Blanden’s hard hit to short turned into a double play.

Maine tied it with two runs on three hits in the fifth. The Black Bears stole two bases in the inning - the second of which kept them out of what could’ve been an inning-ending double play - and used a bloop single and an RBI groundout to even the score.

The Bearcats loaded the bases on two singles and a walk in the fifth but a foul fly to right ended the threat. Binghamton then put two runners on with two out in the sixth but a strikeout stranded both.

Binghamton outhit Maine 11-9 but left 10 runners stranded in seven innings.

Bereszniewicz went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Blanden went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nevares went 2-for-3.

Rogalla (L, 4-4) scattered nine hits and four runs in 7.0 innings. He had three strikeouts and walked two.

NOTES
Maine (18-8) has clinched the regular season title. Albany (15-12) moved a half-game ahead of BU and into second place and also clinched a postseason berth. Stony Brook (13-14) and Hartford (12-15) will battle it out for the other playoff spot with essentially the winner of their three-game series earning the berth. The 2-4 positions are still up for grabs heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The America East Championship will be held May 22-25 in Lowell, Mass… Thomas hit .455 in the series (5-for-11) and kept his sizzling on-base percentage above .500 (.510, top-5 in NCAA)... Nevares had two extra-base hits and three RBI in the series… Blanden had five hits and three RBI.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Freshman third baseman David Schanz singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Binghamton baseball a 4-3 win over visiting Maine Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win, coupled with an Albany loss, moved the Bearcats (25-19, 14-10 AE) into second place in the America East standings, just two games behind Maine (29-19, 16-8 AE). The teams will finish up their three-game set with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.

In the 10th, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off with a sharp single through the right side. Then after fouling off two bunt attempts, sophomore right fielder and lead-off hitter Zach Blanden instead ripped a single through the left side, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Maine was expecting a bunt and began an infield shift, which Schanz promptly spoiled by drilling the first offering into right center for an RBI single. The speedy Bereszniewicz came home from second with the winning run.

The Bearcats trailed 3-1 in the seventh inning before three straight two-out hits tied the score. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella began the rally with a single through the left side. Bereszniewicz followed with single to right field. Blanden delivered the big hit with a two-run double to the corner in left field. Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares nearly gave BU the lead when his first-pitch drive in the bottom of the eighth stalled at the wall in left field as the wind disappeared.

Sophomore Mike Urbanski (2-0) earned the win after entering in the top of the 10th and stranding Maine’s go-ahead runner on second. Urbanski came all the way back from a 3-0 count to strike out the Black Bears’ dangerous designated hitter and then got the final out of the frame on a line-out to Schanz at third. Urbanski came in for sophomore Greg Ostner, who pitched 3.2 strong innings of middle relief. Ostner entered the game on a moment’s notice after reliever Anthony Grillini left suddenly with an injury after facing just three batters in the sixth. He scattered three hits and a run and struck out three. Ostner pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and then worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth amid steady rain. With runners on first and second, he got the Black Bears’ cleanup hitter to ground out to first, preserving the tie.

The Black Bears accumulated nine hits in the first five innings and used single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats cut their deficit in half with a run in the fourth. Binghamton loaded the bases with one out and junior shortstop John Howell brought in sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas with an RBI groundout. Thomas had opened the inning with an infield single. Bearcats’ starter Jake Lambert escaped a dicey fifth inning when Maine loaded the bases with two infield singles and a walk. But Lambert induced a comebacker on a 3-2 pitch to strand three on base. He departed after allowing two runs in 5.0 innings.

Maine made it 3-1 with a one-out solo home run in the top of the seventh.

Blanden went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Schanz had two hits and the game-winning RBI and Thomas and Bereszniewicz had two hits apiece. Thomas reached base in three of four plate appearances to raise his league-leading on-base percentage to .513 - one of the top-5 marks in the nation.

The Black Bears, who lead the America East with a .299 team batting average, outhit BU 12-10 but stranded 11 runners. With the two runs in the seventh, BU knocked out Maine starter Tommy Lawrence, who was bidding for his ninth straight win.

NOTES
Maine (16-8) still sits atop the America East standings, followed by Binghamton (14-10), Albany (14-11), Stony Brook (12-13) and Hartford (11-15). The top four teams at the end of next weekend’s play (final 3 games) advance to the conference tournament, held May 22-25 in Lowell, Mass. Binghamton would clinch a playoff spot with one more win or one more Hartford loss.

Thursday's Recap

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton’s most successful softball season in nearly two decades came to an end on Friday afternoon with a pair of losses on the second day of the America East Tournament. The Bearcats (30-17) fell 4-2 to top-seeded Albany in the winners’ bracket before being eliminated 9-0 by Stony Brook later in the day. The three-day event, which is being held at the Bearcats Sports Complex, will conclude on Saturday when Albany and Stony Brook meet in the championship round.

“It’s disappointing to end our season like this,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “I told our players that this is something we will learn from for next year. We came out and played well against Albany but we didn’t do a good job in the elimination game.”

In the first game, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Lisa Cadogan in the top of the first inning. The Great Danes, however, tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Annie Johnson.

Kylie Apostolina put Albany up 2-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning but freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh matched her in the top of the third inning. It was a two-run home run by Charlise Castro in the bottom of the third inning, however, that was the decisive blow of the game.

The Bearcats left two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Brittany MacFawn improved to 28-7 with the win while junior pitcher Demi Laney fell to 15-7 with the loss.

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh and junior second baseman Jessica Bump each finished with a pair of hits. Harbaugh scored on Cadogan’s single in the first inning.

In the elimination game, things unraveled quickly for the Bearcats as the Seawolves scored five time in the top of the first inning. With the Bearcats committing a pair of errors, Stony Brook needed only two hits in that frame. The big blow was a three-run triple by Gina Bianculli.

The Bearcats settled down over the next two innings before Stony Brook plated four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Olivia Mintun drilled a three-run home run and Shayla Giosa scored the final run on a fielding error.

Allison Cukrov tossed a one-hit shutout to improve to 13-15 on the season. It marked the first and only time that the Bearcats were shut out all season. Laney took the loss again in the elimination game. Six of the Seawolves’ runs were unearned.

Harbaugh led the Bearcats with a .429 average during the tournament, going 3-for-7 at the plate. Bump and senior outfielder Jessica Phillips each finished 3-for-8 (.375). Phillips was the only Bearcat player to hit safely in all three games.

Binghamton finishes the season with their highest win total since recording a program-record 37-8 mark during the 1995 season. In addition, Binghamton’s .293 final team batting average is its highest mark since moving up to the NCAA Division I level in 2002.

NOTES: Harbaugh and Phillips were both named to the America East All-Tournament Team.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Host Binghamton (30-15) scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 7-1 win over Hartford (21-33) in an America East Tournament first-round game on Thursday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats advance to the winners’ bracket in the double-elimination tournament and will face Albany on Friday at 11 a.m.

Binghamton had been held to just two hits through the first five innings against the Hawks. That all changed in their final offensive inning of the game, as the Bearcats stroked a pair of doubles and three singles to break open the game.

“I thought we kept our composure during the game,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “We came out tight but were finally able to approach our at-bats a lot better later in the game.”

Sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead when she doubled home junior third baseman Mikala King. Melani Maxwell, however, tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with her third home run of the season.

King got the sixth inning started with a one-out double. Two batters later, she was singled home by freshman pinch hitter Griffin McIver.

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh made 3-1 when she drew a bases-loaded walk. After a RBI single by freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh stretch the lead to 4-1, fellow freshman Lisa Cadogan drove in another run on a sacrifice fly. Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips then finished the scoring with a two-run double.

Senior pitcher Kate Price improved to 6-4 with the win while Zuzana Kudernatschova took the loss and is now 14-13. Starting pitch Demi Laney went the first five innings, scattering one run on five hits and striking out four batters.

Phillips now has 122 career RBI. That ties her for first place all time in program history with Deannie Plemon (2008-11).

Binghamton has reached the 30-win total for just the second time in school history and the first time during its 12-year NCAA Division I era. Back in 1995, the then Colonials went 37-8.

Earlier in the day, Albany defeated Stony Brook 4-0 in the other first-round game. The Seawolves and Hawks will square off in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. The losers of the first two games tomorrow will then meet in another elimination game at 4 p.m.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis departed from campus Wednesday afternoon en route to Athens, Ga. and the NCAA Regionals. The Bearcats (16-9) will face University of Georgia (22-4) at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Wake Forest and Northwestern play in the opening match at 10 a.m. The host Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in the nation and will be highest-ranked opponent BU has faced in its Division I history.

“We have prepared for Georgia the way we have for any other match,” said head coach Adam Cohen, five-time America East Coach of the Year. “They are obviously very good at every spot on the lineup. We will need to come out and play smart, with energy and leave it all on the court. Their facility is a great setting for college tennis and we’re excited to be there. We will need to start playing well from the very first point in doubles and make them feel it will be a dogfight. Our guys have to be ready mentally and play every point like it’s the last point. The guys are confident and we expect to play hard and give them the best match we can.”

Binghamton earned its sixth straight NCAA berth after capturing another America East title. The Bearcats will be making their ninth NCAA appearance in the last 11 years.

The Bearcats are led by two freshmen at the top of the singles lineup. First-year standout Sid Hazarika (21-3) was crowned the America East Player and Rookie of the Year after producing a remarkable spring season. Hazarika beat two top-10 regional players and went 10-1 after taking over the top singles position in late March. He also plays at the top doubles spot alongside the team’s lone senior, Bastian Bornkessel.

The rest of BU’s starting lineup includes freshman No. 2 Alexander Maisin (18-15), sophomore No. 3 Robin Lesage (20-11), sophomore No. 4 Ismael Dinia (17-13), junior No. 5 Ruben Haggai (22-9) and sophomore No. 6 Florian van Kann (11-9).

Haggai, the Most Outstanding Player at the America East Championship, has rattled off 14 consecutive wins. He pairs with freshman Eliott Hureau at the No. 2 doubles spot and Lesage and Dinia form BU’s third doubles team. Dinia is a team-best 18-11 in doubles this season.

Georgia, the reigning SEC champions, has won 13 matches in a row and 17 of its last 18. The team is making its 35th overall appearance in the tournament and 30th straight. Georgia reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2012, and has reached the finals in three of the last seven seasons. In all, the Bulldogs own six NCAA championships, most recently winning in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08.

But the hosts took a hit on Wednesday with the announcement that the team’s top player, senior KU Singh, has left the team in the eve of the NCAA tournament. Singh was the nation’s fourth-ranked singles player. His departure means that everyone bumps up in the Bulldogs’ lineup, which still boasts three ranked singles players and two ranked doubles tandems.

America East Tournament Media Day Interviews

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton’s banner year on the softball field has resulted in a record number of annual honors from the America East Conference.

Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan has been named the conference’s Rookie of the Year while head coach Michelle Burrell was tabbed as the Coach of the Year. The Bearcats earned a conference-best and program-best five first-team selections. They also led the America East with six total all-conference selections, four all-rookie selections and four all-academic selections.

“I think all of our players are very deserving of the awards and I am glad they have received the recognition,” Burrell said. “Our success so far this season has been a true team effort, from starters to players coming off the bench either in a pinch hit, pinch run or relief pitching situation.”

Joining Cadogan on the first team is junior second baseman Jessica Bump, freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh, freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh and junior pitcher Demi Laney. Senior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller was named to the second team.

Cadogan, Harbaugh and McIntosh were joined by freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee on the All-Rookie Team. Bump and Marsteller were joined by senior outfielder Jessica Phillips and junior third baseman Mikala King on the All-Academic Team.

Cadogan currently ranks sixth in the America East with a .343 batting average, is fourth with eight home runs and is tied for third with 36 RBI. She was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week on March 11 and March 25 and was tabbed the Player of the Week on March 18. Cadogan is the second Binghamton player to be named the America East Rookie of the Year. Phillips won the award in 2010.

Burrell is in her fourth year as the head coach of the Bearcats. She has an overall record of 98-86 and has led the Bearcats to four straight seasons of at least 22 victories. During that stretch, Binghamton has qualified for the America East Tournament twice.

Bump ranks fifth in the America East in batting (.348), second with 10 home runs and is also tied for third with 36 RBI. In addition, she leads the conference with 45 runs, five triples, an on-base percentage of .480 and a slugging percentage of .681. Bump was named the America East Player of the Week on April 22. Two years ago, she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team.

Laney finished the regular season with a 15-6 record. In the process, she broke the program’s single-season record with 164 strikeouts. She recorded a career-high five shutouts and was the America East Pitcher of the Week on April 15. Laney is the first Binghamton pitcher since Michelle Weeks in 2003 to be named first-team all-conference.

Harbaugh ranks eighth in the conference with a .314 batting average and is third with 25 stolen bases. She was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Feb. 18.

McIntosh is tied for fifth in the America East with seven home runs and ranks seventh with 33 RBI. She homered twice this past weekend in the series against Albany.

Marsteller is currently 9-5 and has tossed a career-high four shutouts this season. In 2010, she was named to the America East All-Rookie Team.

Chaffee currently ranks third in the conference with nine home runs and is sixth with 34 RBI. She was named the America East Rookie of the Week on April 8, April 15 and April 29.

To be eligible for America East All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA, and have appeared in at least 50 percent of the team’s games. Bump and Phillips are repeat selections from 2012. King and Marsteller each finished the regular season with three home runs and 21 RBI.

Binghamton (29-15) is the host school for the upcoming America East Tournament which runs May 9-11 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats open up the double-elimination event against Hartford at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

NOTES: Cadogan, Harbaugh and McIntosh are the first three Binghamton freshmen ever to have earned first-team all-conference honors from the America East … prior to this season, the most first-team all-conference selection the Bearcats had was two, on three separate occasions. Most recently, Phillips and Deannie Plemon were named to the 2011 first team … the six America East all-conference selections and four all-rookie picks are also program records. The Bearcats have had four all-conference picks four times. Most recently, Plemon, Phillips, current junior infielder Lisa Cutrona and Meghan Tucker were tabbed in 2011. VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball program will welcome four new additions to campus this fall for the 2013 season, head coach Glenn Kiriyama announced Wednesday. After capturing their third America East title last November, the Bearcats will look to defend its title with freshmen Bianca Anderson, Allison Hovie, Kelly Leach and Bailey Walker. Binghamton, a relatively young team in 2012, will lose just three seniors to graduation in May, Alex Roland, Iva Partaleva and Jordyn Suhr.

Arriving to Binghamton in August will be Bianca Anderson (Columbus, Ohio), Allison Hovie (Neenah, Wis.), Kelly Leach (Sayville, N.Y.) and Bailey Walker (Bayport, N.Y.). The four incoming freshmen will join seniors Xiomara Ortiz and Grace Vickers, juniors Amanda Dettmann, Kristin Hovie and Alexa Zbytniewski and sophomores Megan Burgess and Shannon Kirkpatrick. Junior-transfer Meghan Kraus will also join the Bearcats for the 2013 season after arriving at Binghamton last fall and playing with the team during the spring season.

“Our 2013 recruiting class has a nice mixture of volleyball experience,” Kiriyama said. “Bailey and Kelly have solid all-around ball control skills and will be great benefit to our service reception and back row defense. Allison and Bianca are gifted athletes and will be immediate contributors to our offense this coming year.  We are glad to have them join our team and looking forward to have their drive and enthusiasm permeates our gym.”

Bianca Anderson (Middle Hitter/Outside Hitter) won three letters at Westland High School in Columbus, Ohio. The 6-foot-1 middle hitter was a team captain her senior season and led her squad in kills, blocks and attack percentage. She was named a second-team Ohio Captial all-conference selection and her team’s MVP last fall. As a junior Anderson led Westland in kills, blocks and points garnering All-OCC honorable mention honors.

Allison Hovie (Outside Hitter) is a three-year letterwinner for Neenah High School and is the younger sister of current Binghamton sophomore Kristin Hovie. The 5-foot-9 outside hitter is a three-time All-Conference selection including an All-State selection as a senior. She helped lead her team to a fifth place finish in WIAA Division I State Tournament and led Neenah to the Fox Valley Association title. The school’s all-time record holder for aces with 167 also compiled 872 kills and 837 digs during her three-year career. Hovie played her club ball with the Wisconsin Volleyball Academy.

Kelly Leach (Oustide Hitter/Defensive Specialist) is a four-year letterwinner at Sayville High School. The senior captain was a two-time All-Suffolk County selection and earned national honors from the AVCA as the Player of the Week for New York last September. Leach was also named to the Suffolk County All-Tournament team as a junior and a senior. Leach, a three-time scholar-athlete, also competed in basketball and lacrosse.

Bailey Walker (Libero/Defensive Specialist) is a five-year letterwinner for Bayport Blue Point High School. The two-year captain was named All-League in 2009 and 2011 and All-Conference in 2010 and 2012. The 5-foot-5 libero was named the League VII Player of the Year after leading her team to the best record in the conference. Walker is also a four-time All-League and two-time All-State selection for the track and field team. She helped her 4x400 team capture the 2012 New York State title while earning the Section XI Sportsmanship award. Walker is a member of the Long Island Volleyball Academy.

Binghamton will seek back-to-back America East titles when they begin camp in August. The Bearcats return three starters from their championship squad including reigning Co-Setter of the Year Amanda Dettmann and tournament Most Outstanding Player Grace Vickers.

Bryce Edmister Garners Team MVP Honors in 2013

Contact: Mike Porter (sports1@binghamton.edu)

Vestal, NY—Junior golfer Bryce Edmister was recently picked as the Team MVP at the 66th Annual Varisty Awards Program last week by head coach Bernie Herceg. This is the second straight MVP award for Edmister who just finished 10th out of 60 individuals competing at the America Sky conference tournament.

In total, Edmister had six top-10 finishes in 2012-13 to pace the Bearcats. The junior lefty posted back-to-back runner-up finishes this fall, taking a second-place standing at Binghamton’s home event and at the Philadelphia Big-5 Invitational just days afterwards. At the Big-5, Edmister came up just one stroke shy of winning his first event with a 36-hole total of 146 (+6). Additionally, he held a narrow lead after two rounds at the season-ending America Sky Championships, but fell to 10th after a final round 77. His second round lead was the first time a BU player has held a share or outright lead at the event since the Bearcats’ inception into the league back in 2007.

In back-to-back years, Edmister has held the team low for scoring average. This season, he carried a 74.5 mark in 11 tournaments played. He had six rounds of par or lower this calendar year and the Bearcats used his score over 92 percent of his rounds played towards their team score. In three seasons with the program, Edmister has ten top-10 finishes dating back to 2010.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares has been selected as the America East Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

In four games during the week, Nevares hit .500 (7-for-14) with a home run and seven RBI. He keyed a three-game sweep of America East foe Hartford with three extra-base hits and seven RBI.

Nevares belted a three-run home run to pace BU to an 8-2 win over Hartford in the series finale. He also raised his team-best doubles total to 16 with a two-bagger to the wall, and is just three short of tying the single-season school record. With BU up 2-0, Nevares smoked an RBI double to the wall in left center to key a two-run sixth inning and then delivered his first homer of the season one inning later. With one out and runners on second and third, Nevares jumped on a 1-0 pitch and sent it into BU’s bullpen beyond the left field wall, extending the Bearcats’ lead to 8-0.

He also was perfect defensively at second base.

Nevares ranks second in the conference in doubles, third in hits (51), fourth in slugging (.452) and fifth in average (.329)

VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares went 2-for-3 with a double and a three-run home run and Binghamton baseball (24-19, 13-10 AE) completed a three-game sweep of visiting Hartford (14-31, 11-13 AE) with an 8-2 win Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The win moved BU to within a half-game of second-place Albany in the America East standings and kept the Bearcats 2.5 games clear of fifth place as teams battle for a top-4 playoff position in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Up 2-0, Nevares smoked an RBI double to the wall in left center to key a two-run sixth inning and then delivered his first homer of the season one inning later. With one out and runners on second and third, Nevares jumped on a 1-0 pitch and sent it into BU’s bullpen beyond the left field wall, extending the Bearcats’ lead to 8-0.

Hartford tallied two runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.

Senior right-hander Jay Lynch (5-4, 2.48 ERA) stifled the Hawks over eight shutout innings before departing in the ninth. Lynch wound up scattering seven hits and two runs and struck out five. He didn’t walk a batter. Sophomore Mike Urbanski got the final three outs.

Hartford threatened to go ahead in the first inning when the visitors hit Lynch’s first offering for a single and moved the runner to second on a sacrifice. But on the ensuing single to center, junior outfielder Bill Bereszniewicz threw out the runner at the plate and Lynch stranded the remaining runner with a fly out.

Binghamton struck for a run in the second on a leadoff double to the wall in left center by junior DH Shaun McGraw and an RBI single just inside the bag at first by junior first baseman Brian Ruby. In the fourth, BU doubled its lead with two hits and two walks. Nevares walked and McGraw laced a single to right center. Ruby walked to load the bases with one out and junior shortstop John Howell hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Nevares and making it 2-0.

Lynch worked out of a jam in the sixth when Hartford put together back-to-back singles with one out . But Lynch got an infield pop-up and a foul pop-up to third to strand two and keep the shutout.

In the sixth, sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas led off with his second hit of the game and Nevares plated him with his team-high 16th double of the season. After McGraw’s infield single, Ruby ripped a shot up the middle to score Nevares and make it 4-0.

Bereszniewicz (single) and sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden (walk) opened the seventh by getting on base and freshman third baseman David Schanz dropped down a sacrifice fly, that was promptly thrown away at first by the Hawks pitcher, allowing BU’s fifth run to score. After an out, Nevares then sent his shot over the wall to cap the Bearcats’ outburst. Nevares then added a defensive gem to his game highlights. In the Hartford eighth, Nevares ranged up the middle to snare a grounder, spun and fired to first for the putout.

Binghamton outhit Hartford 11-7.

McGraw went 3-for-4 and Ruby went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI to compliment Nevares’ big day.

Binghamton will complete its 17-game homestand with a big three-game weekend series against first-place Maine next Saturday and Sunday. The teams will open with a twinbill Saturday at noon.

NOTES
With six regular-season games remaining, Maine (16-7) is in first place in the America East standings, followed by Albany (14-10) and BU (13-10). Hartford (11-13) and Stony Brook (11-13) are tied for fourth - the final playoff spot. After the Maine series, Binghamton finishes up with a three-game set at Albany… Nevares hit .444 with seven RBI in the three-game series… Thomas hit .545 (6-for-11) in the series.

The Great Danes clinch the conference’s regular-season title with the victory while the Bearcats settle for the No. 2 seed.

Binghamton starting pitcher Demi Laney held the Great Danes scoreless through the first 5.1 innings. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning however, Charlise Castro reached on a single to left field. One batter later, Alcorn delivered her decisive blow, which landed just inside the left field foul pole.

MacFawn improved to 26-7. She held the Bearcats to just two hits, struck out 10 batters and did not issue a walk. Laney’s record drops to 15-6.

“I thought we played really well defensively,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Unfortunately, we just did not put together good at-bats today. We will look to make an adjustment and have a better approach in the box for the tournament.”

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s track & field team earned a program-best runner-up finish at the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which concluded on Sunday afternoon at the East Gym Track. The Bearcat men’s squad was fourth out of eight teams but sophomore Jesse Garn won the 1,500.

Head coach Mike Thompson and his staff of Annette Acuff, Natilee Dawkins and Gabe Fletcher was named the America East Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time. The quartet was previously named the men’s top staff in the conference following the 2011 America East Indoor Meet and the 2012 outdoor championships.

After placing a close third at last year’s outdoor meet and this year’s indoor championships, the Binghamton women finally claimed their first America East runner-up trophy. With Albany cruising to a repeat team title with 245 points, the Bearcats were able to outdistance third-place Vermont 136-109.5.

“I am so proud of our women’s team,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “They have come a long way. It took a near-perfect effort to get second place this weekend and nearly everyone we were counting on stepped up.”

Junior Alexis Murray placed second in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 39-8 ¾. Including yesterday’s second-place finish in the long jump and third-place finish in the javelin, she finished the meet with a team-best 22 points.

Also in that relay group were junior Erika Kisel, who was eighth in the 400 (57.32), sophomore Ivory Taussig, who was fifth in both the 100 (12.23) and 200 (25.02) and junior Kathleen Klein. Taussig, Klein, Kisel and junior Alexx Baum were also third in the 4x100 relay (47.24).

Freshman Kierra Arthur was third in the 100 hurdles (14.76).

Garn, meanwhile, won his first conference title with a time of 3:44.76.  Later in the meet, he anchored the second-place 4x800 relay team, which included juniors Chris Fernandez, Raul Avalos and Ben Snodgrass with a time of 7:34.98. The men’s 4x400 team of seniors Mike Jennings and Casey Gilbert, sophomore Zaid Al-Doori and freshman Max Linden also placed second (3:16.40).

Elsewhere on the men’s side, senior Jeff Martinez was second in the 5,000 (14:54.16) and freshman Cameron Black was third in the 110 hurdles (14.92).

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis swept the major awards after capturing the program’s sixth straight America East championship. Head coach Adam Cohen was tabbed by his peers as conference Coach of the Year and freshman phenom Sid Hazarika was a unanimous choice for both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

In his seventh year at Binghamton, Cohen garnered his fourth straight Coach of the Year award and fifth overall (2008, 2010-13). He guided the Bearcats to a 16-9 overall mark and a sixth straight conference crown. Binghamton extended one of the America East’s longest current title streaks with a 4-0 win over host UMBC on April 28. The Bearcats now head to Athens, Ga. to face second-ranked Georgia in the NCAA first round on May 10.

Hazarika came to campus in January and proceeded to steamroll to a 21-3 overall record, including a 10-1 mark up at the top singles spot. He knocked off two top-10 regionally ranked foes and also added 11 doubles wins playing at No. 1.

Joining Hazarika on the all-conference first team were junior Ruben Haggai, Robin Lesage and Alexander Maisin. Hazarika and his partner, senior Bastian Bornkessel, were selected first team in doubles, as were Lesage and his partner, sophomore Ismael Dinia.

Dinia earned second team all-conference recognition, as did the doubles tandem of Haggai and freshman Eliott Hureau.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella delivered a one-out walk-off infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Binghamton baseball (23-19, 12-10 AE) a dramatic 6-5 win over Hartford (14-30, 11-12 AE) and a sweep of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. Binghamton won the seven-inning opener 3-2.

With the bases loaded and one run already in, Pancerella hit a smash to the left side of the infield that the Hartford third baseman couldn’t flag down. Junior Daniel Nevares raced home with the winning run, setting off a celebration at the plate and at first around Pancerella. The Bearcats trailed 5-4 entering their final at-bat in the tenth inning before rallying.

Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas (3-for-4, RBI) got things started with a crisp single up the middle on the very first pitch of the inning. He moved to second on a wild pick-off throw and Nevares drew a walk. Freshman pinch hitter Reed Gamache dropped down a perfect bunt and the Hawks pitcher tried to get the force at third but Thomas was on the bag safe. Junior first baseman Brian Ruby plated Thomas with the tying run on a sacrifice fly to right. Junior shortstop John Howell was then intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up Pancerella’s winning hit.

Sophomore reliever Anthony Grillini (4-0, 3.81) earned the win with 5.2 innings of strong work. Grillini allowed just two hits and a run in relief of junior starter Jack Rogalla. Grillini struck out seven and walked one.

Hartford outhit BU 10-3 and built a 4-1 cushion before the Bearcats scratched out three unearned runs on just one hit in the seventh. After being shut down on one hit through six innings by Hartford starter Brian Hunter, BU took advantage of the pitching change. The seventh inning included a hit batter, walk, botched play on a bunt and wild pitch before freshman third baseman David Schanz made it 4-3 on a sacrifice fly. With two outs and the tying run on third, Thomas delivered in the clutch, ripping a 1-1 pitch up the middle for an RBI single and a 4-4 tie.

After scoreless eighth and ninth innings, Hartford plated the go-ahead run in the 10th on a one-out double and a two-out RBI single into shallow right center that resulted in a disputed play at the plate.

But the Bearcats struck for the deciding runs off the Hawks’ closer in the bottom of the frame.

In the opener, BU trailed 2-0 before a bases-clearing double off the bat of Nevares turned the tide in the fifth inning. Senior ace Jake Lambert went the distance and scattered six hits and one earned run. Lambert (5-2, 3.80) retired the side in order in four of seven innings and stranded the potential tying run on second in the seventh to close it out.

The Bearcats put runners on in every inning but stranded five before cashing in on the Nevares hit in the pivotal fifth. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off and reached after getting hit. After a line-out, Schanz dropped a perfect bunt down toward third, putting runners on first and second. Thomas then hit a sharp shot to deep short and reached with the infield single to load the bases. Nevares then lashed a 1-1 pitch to the wall in right center, clearing the bases.

Hartford put its leadoff runner on in the sixth but Lambert got a shot to third that Schanz snared and fired back to first to complete the double play. In the seventh, Lambert got his fifth strikeout and after the two-out double, Lambert forced a fly out to right to end it.

Nevares went 2-for-3 with the three RBI and Schanz went 3-for-3.

NOTES
Maine (15-7) and Albany (14-9) split their doubleheader to retain the top two positions in the America East standings. The Bearcats (12-10) jumped ahead of Hartford (11-12) into third place. Stony Brook (10-13) and UMBC (6-17) split their twinbill, leaving BU 2.5 games clear of Stony Brook for a top-four tournament position. There are seven conference games remaining for each team.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh homered twice and junior pitcher Demi Laney won her 15th game of the season as Binghamton (29-14, 14-3 AE) split a doubleheader against Albany (34-13, 14-2)  in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats won the opener 3-1 but fell short in the nightcap 3-2. Sunday’s noon game, therefore, will determine the conference’s regular-season champion.

Binghamton’s 29 wins is its most since going 29-12 during the 1999 season. In addition, the victory in the first game extended the Bearcats’ win streak to a season-high nine games.

Laney, who improved to 15-5, has now recorded the highest win total by a Binghamton pitcher since Margaret Yerdon also won 15 games during the 1999 season. Against the Great Danes in the opener, Laney scattered one run on four hits and struck out eight batters.

McIntosh jump started the offense with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Three innings later, junior third baseman Mikala King made it 3-0 with a solo home run.

Alexa Toole broke the shutout with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. Laney, however, retired four of the final six batters to preserve the victory.

The loss was tagged to Brittany MacFawn, but she would start off the second game with a vengeance. She had a no hitter through three innings and held Binghamton to just four hits in the nightcap.

Offensively, Maggie Cocks was credits with a pair of RBI on a fielder’s choice in the top of the third inning, giving Albany a 2-0 lead. One inning later, Lindsey Stout made it 3-0 with a RBI single.

McIntosh struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two run home run. The Bearcats, however, left two men on base at the end of the inning. From there, MacFawn retired six of the last seven batters, raising her record to 25-7.

The loss was tagged to Rhoda Marsteller, who is now 9-5.

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh hit a team-best .500 during the doubleheader. She went 2-for-4 with a walk. McIntosh and senior outfielder Jessica Phillips both went 2-for-5 (.400).

Women’s Tennis Garners Three All-Conference Selections

America East Release

Cambridge, Mass—Three Binghamton University women’s tennis players were named to the all-conference squad as announced by the America East on Friday morning. Sophomore Katya Medianik was a first-team singles player, while freshmen Sara Kohtz and Alexis Tashiro rounded out the second-team for BU. Conference champions Stony Brook swept the major awards, winning Player of the Year (Nini Lagvilava), Rookie of the Year (Jackie Altansarnai) and Coaching Staff of the Year.

“I’m very happy for all three of our girls for making the all-conference team,” head coach Libby McGovern said. “It’s an awesome honor and shows just how impressed coaches around the league felt of their play. Having not one, but three underclassmen on this list just shows how bright our future can be and I am definitely looking forward to watching us grow as a program.”

Medianik, a sophomore from Brooklyn, NY played atop the Bearcats lineup all season for third-year head coach Libby McGovern. As a team leader, Medianik won three dual matches at singles this 2013 campaign, two coming against Hartford and UMBC’s top singles player. She has 18 career singles wins over her short career and was recently named team MVP at the annual Varsity Awards Banquet.

Kohtz performed solidly in her first season with BU by way of Chicago, Illinois. She won a team-best 14 singles matches, including a record of 10-8 in dual matches. She went a combined 10-4 from the second and third singles positions, claiming four straight wins to close out her freshman season at third singles.

Tashiro played anywhere from 2-4 in BU’s singles lineup this season; performing exceedingly well as a newcomer. The Jamaica, NY native carried a record of 6-14 in dual play this season. Her best play came at second singles where she had a 3-7 mark this spring. In a 4-0 win over Hartford in the America East Quarterfinals, Tashiro won on both the singles and doubles court to secure the Bearcats their 12th straight trip to the conference semis.

Hunsberger Named To America East All-Conference First Team

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Katherine Hunsberger made history today, becoming the first-ever Binghamton women’s lacrosse player to be named to the America East all-conference first team and back-to-back All-Academic teams, as announced by the conference Thursday evening at the annual awards reception held on the campus of Stony Brook University, the site of the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Freshmen Allie Rodgers and Erin McNulty also garnered all-conference recognition, each being named to the All-Rookie team.

Hunsberger, a four-year letterwinner, finished her 2013 campaign first or second on the team in almost every major statistical category. The senior captain was first in goals (35), points (36) and draw controls (76) and second in ground balls (20) and caused turnovers (10). Hunsberger completed the year second in the conference in draw controls per game (5.43) and seventh in goals per game (2.50).

“I couldn’t be more proud of Katherine being honored by the America East for both her efforts on the field and in the classroom,” interim head coach Stephanie Allen said. “Her relentless dedication to reaching her goals as a student-athlete is unparalleled.  Her contributions to this program are immense and she is incredibly deserving of these accolades.”

Hunsberger started all 14 games for the Bearcats and ended the season ranked among the nation’s top 10 in draw controls. She found the back of the net in every game of 2013 and concluded her career on a 17-game goal streak dating back to April 2012. The standout midfielder netted seven hat tricks including four in a row to end the year for a career total of 13.

During her final season as a Bearcat the Cortland, N.Y. native etched her name in the Binghamton record books setting the all-time program record for draw controls with 152. Hunsberger surpassed Lauren Wetherell’s (2003-06) total of 135. Her 76 draw controls broke her own single-season school record of 51, which she set last year. Hunsberger also finished her illustrious career fifth all-time in program history with 83 goals.

As dynamic as she is on the field, Hunsberger was just as prolific off being named to her second straight America East All-Academic Team. Hunsberger maintains a 3.65 GPA as a integrated neuroscience major and is a three-time America East Honor Roll selection. She is just the third Bearcat to be named to the All-Academic team and the first to earn the honor twice.

Binghamton placed a pair of newcomers on the America East All-Rookie team for the second time in program history. McNulty and Rodgers join Ali Castiglie and Lisa Illig (2008) as the second Bearcat duo to earn all-conference recognition in their first year of eligibility. The pair of rookies are the 10th and 11th Binghamton freshman to garner the honor.

McNulty started 10 games in goal for the Bearcats finishing the season with 96 saves. The highly touted freshman from Holbrook, N.Y. led Binghamton with 22 ground balls while causing five turnovers out of net. McNulty was named Rookie of the Week on March 25 after helping the Bearcats halt a 14-game losing streak with a 10-7 win over Siena.

Rodgers played in all 14 games for the Bearcats, getting 10 starts. The first-year player from Baldwin, N.Y. scored 10 goals and handed out three assists for the fourth highest point total on the team. Rodgers recorded three multi-goal games from her midfield position while picking up eight draw controls, seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.

“Erin and Allie are also very deserving of these honors and I hope there are many more to come for these young ladies,” Allen continued. “Both are tremendously hard workers and will be staples in continuing to build this program. They immediately made an impact on the field for us this year and I’m excited to see them reach their potential as student-athletes here at Binghamton.“

Binghamton finished the season 2-12, but picked up its fourth America East victory since joining the league in 2002 with a 7-6 win over Vermont in late March.

VESTAL, N.Y.—VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton University honored its student-athletes at the 66th Annual Varsity Awards Program Thursday night at the Events Center. More than 400 students, staff, families and supporters were on hand as the department unveiled its 2012-13 award winners. The event was streamed live on BU’s website for the seventh straight year. The evening also included a Senior Recognition Dinner and culminated with the annual highlight video, produced by former soccer player and webmaster Elsan Dzudza ‘98.

Four senior student-athletes spoke during the two ceremonies: track athlete Ashley AuPont, soccer player Trey Jasenski, basketball player Taylor Johnston and volleyball player Alex Roland.

Voice of the Bearcats Roger Neel served as master of ceremonies and University President Harvey Stenger and Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott offered remarks.

“You will have incredible memories,” Stenger said in his opening remarks to the senior class. “You will have friends for life … friends you will stay connected to throughout your life. Come back and be part of our tradition moving forward and be proud of what we all have accomplished. Congratulations!”

“This is the culmination of a lot of years of hard work at one of the finest academic institutions in the country,” Elliott said in his welcome. “As you celebrate your academic and athletic accomplishments, make sure you thank those people who helped you get to where you are tonight… We wish you all the best … always be a Bearcat.”

“Leaving home (Texas) was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” senior speaker and volleyball player Alex Roland said, about choosing to come to Binghamton. “Coach Kiriyama pushed me to reach high expectations and the entire athletics department was like a family. My experience taught me how to stay true to myself and I will represent the University forever. I’m just fortunate Binghamton chose me.”

“Cherish what you have here,” soccer player Trey Jasenski said in his comments at the podium. “Make your bonds stronger ... you don’t want to look back and ask ‘What if?’”

The major winners included Athletes of the Year Donnie Vinson (wrestling), Jessica Bump (softball) and Grace Vickers (volleyball). Other seniors earning recognition for their career achievements were soccer player Jake Keegan, Vinson, softball player Jessica Phillips and volleyball player Alex Roland. The full list of award winners is below.

2012-13 Athletes of the Year
MALE – Donnie Vinson (Gr., Wrestling)

Vinson is a repeat winner of the top award. In his final collegiate season, he again rose to the top of his weight class and produced a record-breaking season. Accolades included conference wrestler of the year honors for a second straight year, most outstanding wrestler at the conference championship - another repeat honor, a perfect 17-0 dual match season, a 33-3 overall record, a national ranking as high as No. 3 in the country and four wins and a top-12 showing at the NCAA Championship. Twenty of Vinson’s wins were by pin, technical fall or major decision and he will leave the program as its all-time wins leader.

Co-FEMALE - Jessica Bump (Jr., Softball)
Sharing top honors as Female Athlete of the Year is Bump, a softball standout who has helped lead the program to its best season during its NCAA Division I era. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, she leads the America East Conference in runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and triples. She is also tied for second in home runs and is tied for third in runs batted in. Two weeks ago, she broke the program’s single-season record for runs in a season. This coming weekend, she and the rest of her teammates will battle Albany for the America East regular-season title and the right to host next week’s conference tournament.

Co-FEMALE – Grace Vickers (Jr., Volleyball)
Vickers is a volleyball standout who collected an array of awards during her junior season. The two-year captain helped guide the volleyball team to its third America East title while being named the conference tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. After leading the league in hitting percentage, she was named first team all-conference and was the only America East volleyball player to be named to the All-Conference and All-Academic Teams. Equally impressive off the court, she was named the America East Scholar-Athlete for volleyball and has garnered a place on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll each semester since its inception.

Jake Pitler Award
(career achievement, leadership, given to senior male)
Jake Keegan (Sr., Soccer)

Keegan became the most prolific scorer during the soccer program’s Division I era. With 11 goals this season, he finished his career with 28 goals, the most by a Binghamton Division I men’s soccer player. In addition, his 69 total points are also tops in program history during the Division I era. He is a two-time all-conference selection who was a first-team selection this year.

Jessie A. Godfrey Award
(career achievement, leadership, given to senior female)
Alex Roland (Sr., Volleyball)

Roland is only the second Binghamton female student-athlete to win multiple America East championships during the school’s Division I tenure. She was a four-year starter and three-time all-conference selection who helped lead the volleyball team to America East titles and NCAA appearances in 2009 and 2012. She ranks among the top 10 in program history in blocks, kills and sets played. Off the court, Roland was a four-time member of the America East Honor Roll and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice. She also was one of the school’s 2012-13 NCAA Woman of the Year nominees.

John Bilos Alumni Awards (male and female)
(career performance in athletics)
MALE – Donnie Vinson (Gr., Wrestling)

A four-time NCAA qualifier and 2012 All-American, Vinson will leave the program as its all-time wins leader with 132 wins. He recorded the highest NCAA individual finish of any BU wrestler during the program’s Division I tenure when he placed 3rd at the 2012 national championship. A two-time conference wrestler of the year, he only lost 8 times in 79 career dual matches and was a perfect 17-0 this season in duals.

FEMALE – Jessica Phillips (Sr., Softball)
Phillips has rewritten the softball record books in a stellar career. She ranks first all time in runs, hits, doubles, home runs, walks, slugging percentage and total bases. Shane Warner One Of Five Finalists For YRL ‘Unsung Hero’ Award

Unsung Hero Website

Vestal, NY—Senior men’s lacrosse player Shane Warner has recently been named a finalist for the Yeardley Reynolds Love (“YRL”) Unsung Hero Award. Run by the ‘One Love Foundation’, the award goes to one male and one female Division I collegiate lacrosse student-athlete who is ‘hard-working, humble, honest, kind, and enthusiastic; this individual serves as an inspiration to her/his team both on the field and off’. The award is given in honor of former University of Virginia student-athlete Yeardley Love who was tragically murdered in 2010.

“I would like to thank the Yeardley Love Foundation for considering me in a group of such great players, but even more importantly great people,” Warner said. “If I was able to portray the characteristics of Yeardley during my time here at Binghamton, than I know that I had a positive influence on my teammates.”

Warner joins four other male athletes in the running for the award. The four other finalists joining Shane hail from Cornell, Loyola Univ., North Carolina and Ohio State. The Tomkins Cove, NY native fully demonstrates what the award is all about. A captain and team leader on the Bearcats, Warner has been a student-athlete who exhibits class and integrity both on and off the field. A standout two-way player on the lacrosse field, he also makes the university proud with his contributions in the classroom and the community.

Currently boasting a cumulative 3.80 GPA as a double major in History and Comparative Literature, Warner has made the dean’s list each and every semester at Binghamton. Recently, he was chosen to be part of the America East All-Academic squad and has been inducted into numerous honor societies that include: The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Chi Alpha Omega National College Athlete Honor Society and the Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization.

In the community, Shane has devoted numerous hours to giving back. He’s been both a camp counselor and volunteer coach at numerous lacrosse camps in his spare time over the summer. This past fall, he was a mentor in the College For Every Student program, giving students from West Middle High School in Binghamton, NY the tutoring and encouragement needed to succeed in the classroom.

His biggest contribution may have been this past summer when he visited Uganda for two weeks with the ‘Fields of Growth’ lacrosse program. Warner helped teach youngsters about the game of lacrosse in daily clinics, coached the Ugandan national lacrosse team in training sessions and most importantly volunteered his time to making a difference. Shane and a handful of other student-athletes visited orphanages, schools and towns in need to provide any assistance. He helped continue the construction of the ‘Hopeful School’ in Masaka, which provides education to children in need. Since returning from his trip, he has stayed committed to the cause by giving back. Earlier this semester, he and his Binghamton teammates donated over $600 to the organization in a fundraising effort.

Golf Finishes Seventh In America Sky Championship

Final Team Results

Final Individual Results

San Antonio, TX—Binghamton held put on Wednesday, finishing in seventh place at the America Sky golf conference championships at the Dominion Country Club. With a 54-hole total of 900, the Bearcats fell 29 strokes behind the conference champions from Houston Baptist. Junior Bryce Edmister couldn’t hold on to a second round lead as he finished alone in 10th place with a score of 218 (+2).

BU shot a final round 299 (+11) at the par 72 course in San Antonio; remaining in 7th place the entire duration of the round. The Bearcats bested five schools at tournament’s end, but fell short of qualifying for the NCAA team bid which went to the Huskies of Houston Baptist. The Huskies trailed second round leaders Southern Utah by a mere stroke and rallied on Wednesday besting the conference newcomers by four strokes on the day and three overall. Individual medalist honors went to Sacramento State’s Jordan Weir. Weir stayed a stroke clear of Houston Baptist’s Preston Stanley with a 54-hole total of 213 (-3).

Edmister started the round off in shaky fashion, bogeying the second hole, birdying the third and recording a quadruple bogey on the par 4 fourth hole. The ‘quad’ knocked him from first place to seventh place. The junior went on to play the next 11 holes at one-under, including back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15. Unfortunately, the Webster, NY native was unable to knock down his score any further as he recorded bogeys on two of his last three holes. Despite a 77 on Wednesday, Edmister still racked up his sixth top-10 finish of the season. He finishes 2012-13 with a team-best scoring average of 74.5

Senior David Cellura turned in a good tournament to finish up a successful four-year career at Binghamton.  Cellura shot a 78 on Wednesday, earning a 27th place finish at the Dominion, tying with three others at 226. He ends his career with four top-10 finishes and ten in the top-20.

Sophomore Jack Sedgewick had BU’s best round on Wednesday with a final round 73 (+1). Sedgewick made three birdies on the front on his way to a 35 (-1) and closed out his round with a birdie at the par 5 18th—a hole he recorded a four on two of the three days.

Freshman Jesse Perkins shot a 74 to finish tied in 43rd place with teammate Josh Holling. Perkins played brilliant golf, playing the Dominion at one under through 17. However, on the 18th hole, the freshman failed to stay in red numbers as he took an eight on the par 5 last hole.

The Bearcats had a terrific 2012-13 campaign, winning three events and placing in the top-5 in six. They finished with a team scoring average of 229.8—- good for fourth lowest in program history. Edmister led the way with six top-10 finishes, followed by four from sophomore Josh Holling who was the individual medalist at the Cornell Invite this past fall.

Antinozzi and Bechle headline all-star selections for Men’s Lacrosse

America East Release

Cambridge, Mass.—Junior midfielder Michael Antinozzi and freshman defender Chris Bechle were picked as second-team All-Conference selections as announced by the America East conference on Wednesday evening. In addition, BU had a pair of All-Academic honorees in senior Shane Warner and junior Garrett Augustyn.

“We’re all just really proud of all four of these guys,” second-year head coach Scott Nelson said. “They have put in a ton of time and hard work on the field and all are good guys and student-athletes. It’s nice they get to be recognized for their strong contributions to our team this past season.”

For the third straight season, Michael Antinozzi has been honored by the conference with his second-team selection in 2013. The junior midfielder made the All-Rookie team in 2011 and was one of two BU players to make the first-team a season ago. Antinozzi finished second on the team with 20 goals this spring, and also added five assists for the Bearcats who wrapped up the season at 5-9 and 1-4 in conference games. The Fallston, Maryland native had a pair of hat tricks this season out of the midfield and recorded a point in each and every game. At season’s end, he also finds himself near the top of nearly all offensive program records. He ranks first in shots (299), tied for second in goals (66), is second in hat tricks (9) and lastly fourth in points (90).

Freshman Chris Bechle becomes the first BU freshman to make an all-conference first or second-team since 2007 (Steve Carlson). Bechle, who also makes the All-Rookie squad as well, started all 14 games for head coach Scott Nelson. The newcomer from Fairport, NY finished second on the team in caused turnovers (13) and picked up 14 ground balls on the backline. He helped guide Binghamton to the lowest Goals Against Average (10.18) in the conference—a full goal lower than Stony Brook.

Senior midfielder Shane Warner headlines the All-Academic team for the Bearcats. The four-year letterwinner played in all 14 games, making 10 starts as a key component on both offense and defense for BU. He scored a pair of goals and added two assists in 2013, and finished fourth on the team in ground balls with 26. Shane has the second highest GPA on the all-academic squad with a 3.79 GPA double majoring in History and Comparative Literature.

Defender Garrett Augustyn joins Warner on the All-Academic squad in 2013. Augustyn made 11 starts, appearing in all 14 games as a long stick midfielder for the Bearcats. He led the team in caused turnovers with 18 and was third on Binghamton with 29 ground balls. With a cumulative GPA of 3.39 in Geography/Urban Planning, the three-year starter becomes the 14th BU player to receive such an honor.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Siena (20-24) jumped out of the gate with seven runs in the first two innings and went on to a 10-3 win over Binghamton (21-19) in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats outhit Siena 11-6 but the Saints used two home runs to pin a third-straight loss on BU.

Siena assembled three walks, a wild pitch and dropped infield pop-up to score four unearned runs in the first inning - with a bases-clearing double doing the primary damage. One inning later, Siena went to the long ball. After back-to-back singles up the middle, a three-run home run over the wall in left field stretched the Saints’ lead to 7-0.

Binghamton threatened throughout the game but couldn’t mount a strong rally. The Bearcats loaded the bases in three different innings but left nine runners stranded in the first six frames and had two more erased on double plays. The hosts got on the board with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning but left the bases loaded. Siena got another run in the seventh and two more in the ninth courtesy of a two-run home run. Each team used six pitchers as they conserved arms for their respective stretch runs in conference play.

In BU’s sixth, junior third baseman Brian Ruby got things going with a two-out walk. Senior first baseman Jordon Smucker followed with a single to center and running hard, Ruby took third with some aggressive running. Smucker moved to second on the throw. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Ruby with BU’s first run. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz then hit an RBI single through the left side scoring Smucker. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden drew a walk to load the bases and freshman shortstop David Schanz hit a sharp liner that appeared headed for a run-scoring hit but the Siena right fielder made a diving catch to save two runs.

The Bearcats loaded the bases again in the eighth but produced just one run. Ruby led off with a single, Pancerella hit a one-out single and after a Bereszniewicz walk, Blanden plated Ruby with a sacrifice fly to center field. An infield pop-up left two more stuck on the bases. Binghamton had 12 left on base for the game.

Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares went 3-for-5 to pace the offense. Pancerella went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smucker also went 2-for-4. Sophomore Greg Ostner and freshman Mike Bunal keyed a solid middle-inning pitching performance as four different hurlers allowed no earned runs over six middle innings. Ostner yielded just one hit in his two-inning stint and Bunal didn’t allow a hit in his two innings.

Binghamton faces a key three-game home series with Hartford this weekend. The teams are separated by a half-game in the standings with the Hawks (11-10) clinging to third place and BU (10-10) giving chase and looking to fend off Stony Brook (9-12) in the process. The top four teams advance to the America East tournament.

Final Team Stats

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior pitchers Rhoda Masteller and Kate Price as well as junior pitcher Demi Laney combined to throw a pair of shutouts, leading Binghamton (28-13) to a 7-0, 1-0 sweep over Cornell (21-29) on Wednesday afternoon. With the wins, the Bearcats tie their season high with eight straight victories.

Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Binghamton has its most wins in a season since going 29-18 in 1999. The Bearcats have now won 26 of their last 32 games.

Marsteller scattered three hits and struck out 10 batters and did not allow a walk in the nightcap to record her second straight complete-game shutout. Her record improves to 9-4 on the season, which includes a career-high four shutouts.

Laney tossed the first five innings of the opener and improved her record to 14-5. She allowed three hits, issued just one walk and struck out nine batters. Laney now has 150 strikeouts for the season, which breaks the single-season mark set by Michelle Weeks in 2003.

Price, meanwhile, finished the first game with a pair of scoreless innings.

Cornell, which came into the day with a .294 team batting average, was held to a .160 mark by Laney, Price and Marsteller.

“Cornell is a good offensive team,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Demi, Rhoda and Kate did a great job with their hitters. We played good defense behind them as well.”

Freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan finished the day a team-best .571 (4-for-7). Freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh and junior outfielder Colleen Dougherty each hit .500.

Binghamton broke open a scoreless first game with three runs in the top of the second inning. Junior third baseman Mikala King singled home the first run and scored one batter later on a two-run home run by sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis.

Freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee keyed a four-run third inning with a two-run double. McIntosh and King each added RBI singles.

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh stole her 24th base of the season during the third inning of the first game. That sets the Binghamton program single-season record. The old mark of 23 stolen bases was set by Michelle Thorton in 1995.

Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips, meanwhile, clubbed her 45th career double in the second inning of the first game. That sets the Binghamton program’s all-time record. The previous mark of 44 doubles was set by Jami Pier (1997-00).

Meg Parker took the loss for Cornell in the first game, dropping her record to 3-7.

The Bearcats could only muster three hits in the second game but McIntosh got the one that mattered in the top of the sixth inning. She singled home Dougherty to break open a scoreless tie.

From there, Marsteller retired the final six batters of the game. Despite not giving up an earned run, Alyson Onyon was tagged with the loss. Her record is now 15-17.

Binghamton now heads into a three-game home series against Albany, which will determine the America East regular-season champion. The Great Danes are currently 13-1 in conference play while the Bearcats are 13-2. Whichever team wins at least two games will host the conference tournament May 9-11.

The Bearcats and Great Danes will play a doubleheader at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game at noon on Sunday.

NOTES: Laney’s 14 wins is the highest total by a Binghamton pitcher since Kristen Emerling finished the 2010 campaign with a 14-5 record … Marsteller’s 10 strikeouts represents her season high.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s tennis (16-9) has drawn third-ranked Georgia (22-4) in the first round of the NCAA tournament. After winning the program’s sixth consecutive America East title, BU’s prize was a first-time trip to Athens to face the reigning SEC champion Bulldogs.

“We knew it would be a tough team whoever we drew ... but we didn’t think it would be the third-ranked team in the country,” said head coach Adam Cohen, whose team watched the NCAA Selection Show in the Events Center TAU Bearcat Room. “It is what it is and we will have to prepare over the next week and a half to be ready for Georgia. We look forward to the challenge and will come out with a lot of energy and give it all we have.”

The Bearcats will be making their ninth trip to the NCAA tournament in the last 11 years. The team, which features two freshmen in the top singles positions and just one senior, earned their bid with a 4-0 victory over UMBC in Sunday’s America East Championship. Binghamton beat the host Retrievers for the fourth straight year in the finals.

“It’s an honor to play such a high seed,” senior Bastian Bornkessel said of the NCAA matchup with Georgia. “You go for a reason ... so we will be ready and will give it our best.”

Georgia has four nationally-ranked singles players in its starting lineup, including the sixth-ranked player in the nation. They are coming off a 4-0 win over seventh-ranked Tennessee in the SEC championship match. It was Georgia’s second straight conference title. The Bulldogs will be making their 35th overall appearance in the tournament and 30th straight. Georgia reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2012, and has reached the finals in three of the last seven seasons. In all, the Bulldogs own six NCAA championships, most recently winning in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08.

Edmister Second Round Leader At America Sky Golf Championships

Second Round Results

Third Round Live Stats

San Antonio, TX—Junior Bryce Edmister fired a second round 71 (-1) to take sole possession of the individual lead at the America Sky Golf Conference championship at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. Binghamton dropped a pair of spots on the day with a team score of 303 (+15) and currently hold a seventh place position in the 12-school event. Southern Utah fired a second round 285 (-3) to take the team lead, a slight one-stroke advantage over first round leaders Houston Baptist.

Edmister, who entered Tuesday in third place after an opening round 70, had yet another eventful front nine at the Dominion Country Club. In his first five holes, BU’s top player recorded two birdies and a pair of bogeys to begin the day. Just two holes later, he took advantage of the par 5 seventh with an eagle on the 528 yard hole. Edmister went on to record 10 pars and one bogey the remainder of the round to jump into the first place spot with a 36-hole total of 148 (-3). He holds the one stoke lead over Jordan Herzog of Webster State and Jordan Weir of Sacramento State who both are two under par.

Senior David Cellura continues to play well in San Antonio, recording a 73 (+1) in round two. Cellura had a nice start on Tuesday, making birdies on the pair of par fives that wrap up the 3400 yard front nine (7th and 9th hole). After a birdie on 10 and four straight pars, he gave a few strokes back after three bogeys on the remaining four holes at the Dominion. Cellura firmly sits in 18th place, tied with four others at 148 (+4).

Sophomore Jack Sedgewick followed up an opening round 77 with a 79 on Tuesday. The Ontario native made just one birdie on the afternoon, but it came at the right time as he recorded a 4 on the par 5 18th and final hole of the day. Sedgewick made 11 pars Tuesday, but was hurt by a pair of double bogeys in the second round. Freshman Jesse Perkins rounded out the Binghamton lineup on Tuesday with an 80 (+8).

As a team, the Bearcats have a 36-hole total of 601 (+25) and trail tournament leaders Southern Utah who have a two-day total of 581 (+5). Binghamton is 12 strokes behind fifth place Utah Valley entering Tuesday as they are in search of their seventh top-5 team finish of the season.

The final round will take place tomorrow as BU tees off beginning at 8 am with Perkins. Edmister starts his day at 8:32 and is in search of his first individual tournament championship as a Bearcat. Follow live final round results here

Baseball loses to Marist 9-2

Box Score

Contact: John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Marist (22-17-1) snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fourth inning and the Red Foxes tacked on two more in each of the fifth and sixth frames to defeat Binghamton (21-18) 9-2 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Marist outhit BU 12-7 and benefited from five extra-base hits, including a two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning. The Bearcats, who have dropped four of their last five, were held to four hits over their final six scoreless innings.

Down 2-0 after the Red Foxes scored a pair on three singles in the first, BU loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but an attempted bunt single resulted in an inning-ending putout with three stranded. After leaving another runner at second in the second, BU struck for the tying runs in the third.

Junior DH Shaun McGraw ripped a 3-2 fastball into the Bearcats’ bullpen in left field to make it 2-1. After junior first baseman Brian Ruby drove a pitch to the gap in left center for a double, junior shortstop John Howell followed with an RBI single to center, plating Ruby with the tying run.

But Marist opened the fourth inning with a double and RBI triple and before it was over, the visitors had plated three runs on three hits and led 5-2. A walk, hit batter and two hits produced two more runs in the fifth and the Red Foxes finished the scoring with two more runs in the sixth courtesy of the inside-the-park home run, which banged off the wall in left center, eluding two BU outfielders.

Howell went 2-for-4 with an RBI, the lone BU player with more than one hit. McGraw’s home run was his team-high fourth of the season.

Freshman Jake Cryts (3.1 IP) took the loss. Classmate Tsuyoshi Horibata tossed the final four innings and allowed two runs on three hits.

Chaffee named America East Softball Rookie of the Week for Third Time

America East Conference Release

Freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee has been named the America East Softball Rookie of the Week. It marks the third time this season that she has earned the conference’s weekly accolade.

Chaffee hit .375 with a team-high two home runs and six RBI in leading Binghamton to a 5-0 week. She belted a three-run home run against Colgate on April 23 and followed up with a 3-for-9 performance (.333) in the series against Stony Brook this past weekend.

Chaffee drove in two of the three runs in the Bearcats’ 3-2, eight-inning win in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Seawolves. That includes the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. For the week, Chaffee recorded an on-base percentage of .444 and a slugging percentage of .750.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, Chaffee ranks ninth in the America East in batting (.319), is tied for second with nine home runs and is sixth with 32 RBI. She also ranks second in slugging percentage (.646).

NOTES: Binghamton has now had six of the 11 America East Rookie of the Week selections during the current softball season. Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh got the nod on Feb. 18 while freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan was honored on both March 4 and March 18. Cadogan was also the Player of the Week on March 11.

Live Scoring

San Antonio, TX—Binghamton shot an opening round 298 (+10) on Monday’s first round of the America Sky Championship. The Bearcats head to tomorrow’s second round in fifth place; 16 strokes behind leaders Houston Baptist who shot a team-low 282 (-6). Junior Bryce Edmister had his best round of the spring, making a team-high six birdies on his way to a 70 at the par 72 Dominion Country Club.

BU came out the gate strong on the front nine, firing a combined score of even par as a team. After bogeying the opening hole, Bryce Edmister tore up the remainder of the front. He recorded birdie on four of his next eight holes, including a four on the short par 5 ninth at the Dominion. Three Binghamton players shot a 37 (+1) and all recorded birdie on the ninth hole.

On the back, the Bearcats had an up-and-down finish. Edmister birdied the 11th hole and sat at four under all the way up until the 15th hole where he had a slight hiccup. The junior lefty double bogeyed 15 and bogeyed the following hole, but regained his balance after a birdie on the long par 5 18th. His two-under performance is the lowest round a BU player has recorded at the America Sky Championship since 2007 (Zach Vinal-70). In a field of 60 players, he is tied for 3rd place and just two shots off Utah Valley’s Brayden Eriksen.

Senior David Cellura was steady on Monday, making a team-best 12 pars in round one. His two birdies came on the 9th and 18th holes (both par 5’s). With a first round of 75, he sits in a tie with one other player in 19th place. Sophomores Josh Holling and Jack Sedgewick shot 76 and 77, respectively. Holling made four birdies in the opening round, three coming on par 4’s. Despite a rocky finish, Sedgewick relied upon three birdies on the front to shoot a 77.

Round two will begin tomorrow morning at the Dominion Country Club as Binghamton looks to climb back into closer contention. They are just five shots off a third place standing and eight off second place as the field looks to chase Houston Baptist on Tuesday.

BALTIMORE, Md.—Binghamton men’s tennis continued its command of America East tennis with a 4-0 win over host and second-seeded UMBC in the championship match Sunday afternoon from the Retrievers Tennis Complex. The conference title was BU’s sixth straight and ninth in the last 11 years and advances the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament. It is one of the longest current title streaks of any team in any sport in the America East.

Head Coach Adam Cohen’s squad, which had two freshmen at the top of the lineup and five underclassmen playing singles, overcame its youth and a home-court Retrievers advantage that threatened to even the playing field. But the Bearcats came out and immediately put the pedal to the metal and grabbed the opening doubles point with two lopsided matches at first and second doubles. It was more of the same in singles as BU finished off UMBC in the first three completed matches.

“We came out with a lot of energy today from the first doubles point on,” Cohen said. “Our doubles play was probably the best its looked all season and from there we really put pressure on them, winning the first set in five of the six matches at singles. Every year is really so special and its just a testament to all the hard work these guys put in. We have a really young squad this season, so for guys like Sid (Hazarika), Alex (Maisin) and Elliot (Hureau) to step up at the top of our lineup has been really huge.”

Senior Bastian Bornkessel, the team’s lone senior who has seen nothing but titles in his four-year collegiate career, paired with freshman phenom Sid Hazarika for an 8-3 win at the top spot. The win was Bornkessel’s 70th career doubles victory, which ranks fourth in program history.

Junior Ruben Haggai and freshman Eliott Hureau combined for an 8-3 win at second doubles, beating their teammates at No. 3 to the wire to clinch the point and end doubles play. The third tandem of sophomores Robin Lesage and Ismael Dinia were up 6-4 when their match was halted.

In singles, Haggai polished off a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 to make it 2-0. Dinia won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3 and Hazarika finished off the win with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at first singles. Haggai, who stretched his win streak to 14 matches, was named the Most Outstanding Player. He went 2-0 in singles at the tournament and also posted a doubles win in the final to join his brother Alex Haggai as back-to-back Most Outstanding Players. The elder Haggai, a volunteer assistant this year while working toward his MBA at Binghamton, won the top honor last spring.

“Ruben deserved the award,” Cohen said. “He was our first guy off the court in singles today and before that, had a strong doubles match. He’s had a good run of late (14 straight wins) and was an important part of our championship run this weekend.”

Binghamton will gather Tuesday, April 30 to watch the unveiling of the 64-team NCAA Championship bracket and see where they will be headed. The team will meet the media and fans in the Events Center TAU Bearcat Room at 5 p.m. for the viewing on ncaa.com.

“We’re excited to learn where we will be headed for NCAAs and very happy to keep our season going,” Cohen said.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Visiting Stony Brook (17-28, 9-12 AE) belted a three-run home run, built an 8-0 lead and defeated Binghamton 8-4 in the rubber game of the three-game set Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss dropped Binghamton (21-17, 10-10 AE) into fourth place in the conference standings, just 1.5 games ahead of the Seawolves for the final playoff spot with nine league games remaining.

Stony Brook took advantage of a rare off-outing from senior right hander Jay Lynch, who surrendered nine hits and four runs in five innings. Lynch (4-4, 2.51 ERA) entered the day having allowed just one earned run in his previous 21 innings but Stony Brook got to him for two runs in the first and two more in the third. The Seawolves broke the game wide open with four runs in the sixth - three courtesy of a three-run home run from first baseman Kevin Courtney, who also hit a grand slam on Saturday.

Down 8-0, BU had a chance to take a chunk out of that deficit in the bottom of the sixth when they strung together three hits and loaded the bases. But after a two-out RBI single by junior shortstop John Howell, the Bearcats left the bases full and still trailed 8-1.

Binghamton was limited to the one run on three hits until putting three on the board in the ninth and forcing the Seawolves to dip into their bullpen twice. A leadoff walk to junior first baseman Brian Ruby and a double by Howell put runners on first and second. After a shallow pop-up ate up the first out, junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz walked to load the bases. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden then ripped a two-run double to the wall in right center, giving BU life. Down 8-3, freshman third baseman David Schanz brought in the fourth run on a groundout before a comebacker stranded Blanden and ended the game.

Howell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Blanden moved his RBI count to 20 with the two knocked in.

Stony Brook outhit BU 12-6.

Binghamton plays the first of two non-conference home games this week when BU hosts Marist at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Softball wins 5-2 at Stony Brook to sweep weekend series

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Visiting Binghamton (26-13, 13-2 AE) scored all of its runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 win over Stony Brook (25-22, 7-8 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at University Field. With the win, the Bearcats sweep the three-game weekend series and set up a first-place showdown with Albany (30-11, 13-1 AE) next weekend at the Bearcats Sports Complex for the America East regular-season title.

The Bearcats have now won six straight games and have recorded their highest win total in America East Conference games in a season.  They have swept all five conference series this year and have gone 8-1 on the road during that span.

For the first four innings on Sunday, both teams were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances. The Bearcats left six runners on base during that stretch while the Seawolves left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning.

Finally, the floodgates opened in the top of the fifth inning. Junior second baseman Jessica Bump scored the first run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis followed with a RBI single and freshman designated hitter Griffin McIver wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single.

Stony Brook got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shayla Giosa scored on a sacrifice fly and Alexandria Pisciotta singled home the second run.

Junior pitcher Demi Laney tossed four shutout innings to improve to 13-5 on the season. Senior pitcher Kate Price finished off the final three innings to record her third save of the year. Allison Cukrov was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 9-13.

“I thought we stayed composed and in control even though some things didn’t go our way early in the game,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “Demi again got us out of some tough spots and pitched very well. Jess (Phillips) also made a great catch in the sixth inning.”

Friis finished the game 2-for-4. For the series, she hit a team-best .444 (4-for-9).

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh went 4-for-11 (.364) during the weekend while Chaffee was 3-for-9 (.333) and Bump was 3-for-10 (.300). On the mound, Binghamton held Stony Brook to a .241 batting average and recorded an ERA of just 0.64.

Before its series with the Great Danes next weekend, Binghamton heads to Cornell on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

NOTES: Laney now has 141 strikeouts this season, which is just two behind the program’s single-season record of 143, set by Michelle Weeks in 2003. Cyrilla Suker struck out 142 batters in 2007 … Binghamton won 11 America East games in 2002, back when conference series were four games as opposed to three games.

Baltimore, MD—Freshman Pat Young’s goal with 1:18 left in the game was the difference as UMBC held on for a 10-9 win over Binghamton Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium in an America East conference game.  Young scored four goals on the game, lifting the Retrievers to a conference tournament berth and eliminating the Bearcats from postseason play. Junior Matt Springer scored four goals in the loss as Binghamton ends their season 5-9 and 1-4 in conference play.

Binghamton went up 8-6 with just 18 seconds left in the third quarter before UMBC started to turn the tide. The Retrievers scored with just one second left on the clock and continued their comeback in the fourth. A goal from Young and later a score from senior Matt Gregoire at the 8:55 mark gave the hosts a one goal lead. In what was a very competitive game defensively, Binghamton bought its time in their attempt to tie the score as sophomore Emmett O’Hara stepped up big late. The second-line midfielder ended the 3-0 drought with a top shelf finish with just under three and a half minutes left. After an empty offensive possession for the Bearcats, UMBC capitalized with Young’s long range heroics. The talented freshman fired from beyond 10 yards out to put UMBC ahead for good as they held on for the win and their 10th consecutive tournament appearance.

“This game was back-and-forth all afternoon,” head coach Scott Nelson said afterwards. “We fought hard and were there down the stretch, but didn’t make the necessary plays. It all comes down to them executing down the stretch and unfortunately we didn’t.”

The two teams had eight ties and lead changes during the 60 minutes of action Saturday. Both junior goalie Max Schefler and UMBC goalie Wes DeRito made 12 saves apiece to headline the defense. On offense, Springer had a team-high four goals and finished up the season with 36, which is now a new program mark. O’Hara had a career-high two goals against the Retrievers as the Bearcats were outshot 34-27 on the afternoon.

In the first half, the bench put the Bearcats on the board first. In Emmett O’Hara’s first shift with the second midfield, he beat a defender off the dodge and lined a shot from the left side about five yards out.  After a Retrievers goal, junior Brandon Planck put the visitors up one with his 19th goal of the season. However, UMBC rebounded with a goal of their own to even things up at two after one quarter of play.

After a tripping call, BU moved the ball effortlessly on the man-up early in the second, opening the door for Springer to do damage. The red shirt junior ripped a shoe lace shot that grounded past Wes DiRito for BU’s third goal of the game. With 2:16 remaining in the half, Springer scored again on a similar low skipping shot, this time on the assist from Tucker Nelson. The Bearcats defense in the first half was tremendous, holding the Retrievers to just three goals on 14 shots. As a team, BU won 5-of-9 faceoffs and held a 17-15 groundball advantage heading into intermission.  Schefler made five saves in goal to pace BU.

UMBC opened up the scoring in the second half, tying things up at four on the Pat Young score. Almost at the halfway point, Springer deposited a rocket past Dirito for his third goal of the game and a 5-4 lead. After a quick answer from UMBC, Binghamton relied once again on its second midfield unit. Junior Kelly Donigan sprinted left and fired a one hop shot into the back of the cage at the 6:16 mark. Donigan’s goal was his 10th of the season, giving the Bearcats a one goal cushion.

Later in the quarter, the Bearcats used some good fortune to take a 7-6 lead. Sophomore JT Hauck’s shot attempt was deflected off a player and bounced up high in the air, leaving junior Michael Antinozzi just one play on the rebound. The Fallston, Maryland native snatched the ball in mid-air and fired a shot all in one motion for a highlight reel score.  The Bearcats upped their lead to 8-6 on a caused turnover from Shane Warner. Defender Shawn Needham hustled for the ground ball and found Springer for his fourth goal of the game and the 8-6 lead.

The Binghamton offense managed just one goal in the fourth quarter as they were unable to secure their first playoff berth since 2011. BU graduates just four players and returns a host of key players for 2014. Antinozzi, Springer and Nelson all return on the offensive side having all scored 25 points or more this season. Both Tucker Nelson and Matt Springer broke single season records this season. Nelson with his 27 assists sits atop the charts for a season and Springer now holds the record for goals in a season (36), career goals (94) and points (111).

Stony Brook moves past Women’s Tennis 4-0 In AE Semifinals

Baltimore, MD- Binghamton fell to number one seeded Stony Brook 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the America East semifinals held at the UMBC Tennis Complex. The Seawolves bested BU on Saturday, winning their 11th dual match of the season and second over the Bearcats in 2013. SBU captured the doubles point and powered their way to their second straight America East finals appearance with wins from first, second and fifth singles.

Despite a huge performance out of Katherine Medianik and Agatha Ambrozy at first singles, SBU took the first two doubles decisions, 8-2 and 8-4, respectively, jumping ahead 1-0.  Medianik and Ambrozy held a narrow 8-7 lead over reigning AE Player of the Year Nini Lagvilava and Polina Movchan before the Seawolves ended play with their 8-4 triumph over Alexis Tashiro and Shea Brodsky.

Lagvilava took down Medianik in straight sets and freshmen Alexis Tashiro and Agatha Ambrozy suffered tough two set losses, giving the Seawolves the 4-0 decision. Brodsky won her first set at the fourth spot and Missy Edelblum was ahead in the second set at sixth singles.

The Bearcats wrapped up the season with a 5-17 record in 2013. They will return six players next season, only losing one player to graduation (Jessie Rubin).
