America East Release
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Senior attack Ali Castiglie was named America East Player of the Week as announced by the conference, Monday afternoon. Castiglie led the Bearcats to a thrilling 14-13 victory over Vermont at the Bearcats Sports Complex, last Saturday. Castiglie netted a career-best six goals against the Catamounts, tying the school’s single game record. Binghamton moved to 3-9 on the season with the win and 1-1 in conference play.
“Ali (Castiglie) did a nice job of identifying when and where she could get to the goal and executing our offensive game plan,” head coach Tony Zostant said. “I’m very excited for her and as a senior, she is most deserving of the honor.”
Versus Vermont, Castiglie scored the game winner with 56 seconds left after junior Lis Zuern secured a vital draw control following a Catamount goal. Castiglie finished the game with seven points, adding an assist midway through the first half. On the assist, Castiglie broke BU’s all-time points record set by Lauren Wetherell (2003-06). She surpassed the previous mark of 144 and now has a total of 149 (99 goals, 50 assists) points in her career.
Earlier in the week, Castiglie had a solid game in loss at Colgate with two goals and three ground balls. Castiglie went 3-3 on free position shots during the week.
Binghamton’s leading goal scorer with 26 on the year, Castiglie ranks third in the America East in goals per game (2.36) and sixth in points per game (2.91). Castiglie has seven helpers on the season, giving her a total of 33 points in 2011.
The AE Player of the Week honor is the first-ever earned by a Binghamton women’s lacrosse player. Five Bearcats have been named Rookie of the Week and one named Defender of the Week, but none since 2008. Castiglie, the 2010 America East Fan’s Choice Player of the Year, was named AE Rookie of the Week in February of 2008.
The Bearcats are back in action Saturday, April 9, as they travel to Stony Brook, N.Y. to take on the Seawolves. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. from Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
