VESTAL, N.Y.—Freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee has been named the America East Softball Rookie of the Week. It marks the first time in her career that she has earned the conference’s weekly accolade.
Chaffee hit .421 with a team-best two home runs and nine RBI in leading Binghamton to a 4-1 week, including a series sweep over UMBC. She also finished the week with a .442 on-base percentage and .842 slugging percentage. Chaffee hit safely in all five games and had three multiple-hit performances.
“I thought Taylor started to look a lot more comfortable in the box against Syracuse (last Wednesday),” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She kept it up over the weekend against UMBC.”
Currently, Chaffee has a career-high, six-game hitting streak. She is tied for second on the team with four home runs and is third with 19 RBI.
Binghamton has now had a program-best three different players earn America East Rookie of the Week honors this season. Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh was honored on Feb. 18 and freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan got the nod on March 25. In addition, Cadogan was also the America East Player of the Week on March 18.
The Bearcats (15-11, 5-1 AE) head to St. Bonaventure for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
