Chambers and Ortiz earn America East honors

America East release

VESTAL, N.Y.—Junior setter Julie Chambers and freshman libero Xiomara Ortiz both earned conference honors Monday, as announced by the America East. Chambers was named Setter of the Week for the third time this season while Ortiz garnered her first Rookie of the Week award.

“Julie continues to improve each week through great effort and dedication to the team,” head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. “Xiomara has been a mainstay for us in the backrow all season long and has been a pleasure to coach.”

Chambers and Ortiz led the Bearcats (10-12, 5-2 AE) to a sweep of Albany last Friday night and were as effective in a disappointing five set loss to the Great Danes Sunday evening. After their home-and-home series, Binghamton and Albany are still tied atop the America East, both owning 5-2 conference records.

In BU’s first game against Albany since last year’s championship, Chambers quaterbacked the Bearcats to the tune of 51 assists. Her defense was equally impressive, picking up 10 digs in just three sets. In Sunday’s highly competitive five set match, Chambers eclipsed 50 assists for the third time this season, finishing the match with 51. She put together yet another solid defensive performance collecting 13 digs.

Ortiz had her two best matches of the season over the weekend chasing down 57 total digs (7.12 d/s). Against Albany last Friday, she had a game-high 27 digs, an average of nine per set. Her 27 digs was the most by an America East player in a three-set conference match since 2005. Sunday, Ortiz again led everyone with 30 digs, for an average of six per set. She is now averaging 4.19 digs per set, second in the America East.

Friday’s victory by the Bearcats is the first regular season win over Albany since 2006, the all-time series is now 16-6 in favor of the Great Danes.
