America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—For the second consecutive year, the Binghamton volleyball program has been chosen as the favorite to win the America East championship. The Bearcats received five of the possible seven first place votes and a total of 33 points, edging out rival Albany by two.

“The players have worked hard to get to this position of competing for the conference title,” head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. “We all know that there are many intangibles, many unknowns and that so much can happen during the course of the season. The level of play in the conference has increased greatly over the past few years and we expect it will be a tough fight all the way to the end.”

Albany, who won the three championships in between Binghamton’s two (2005, 2009), earned a first-place vote, finishing with 31 total points. America East semi-finalist, UMBC received the final first-place vote and finished with 24 points, followed by New Hampshire, Stony Brook, Hartford and conference newcomer, Providence.

A three-time finalist, Binghamton (15-16 overall record, 5-5 America East record in 2009), seeks to secure back to back titles in 2010. The top returners for BU include all-conference selections Michelle McDonough (3.83 kills per game), Anna Lejina (3.80 kills per game), all-rookie choice, Alex Roland (0.70 blocks per game) and 2009 tournament Most Outstanding Player, Lindsey Mueller, who finished second in the America East with 9.94 asissts per game.

Binghamton opens the 2010 season against Loyola (Md.) at the Rocket Volleyball Classic in Toledo, Ohio on Friday, August 27.
