VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior first baseman Stephanie DeLuca of the BU softball team has been honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. A ceremony was held last week at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.
The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, created in 1997, honors State University of New York (SUNY) students who have best demonstrated and been recognized for their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, which may include leadership, athletics, career achievement, community service or creative and performing arts. The minimum GPA required for consideration is a 3.25.
The ceremony included all 64 SUNY campuses. There were 260 students who received the award out of over 500,000 students who attend schools in the SUNY program.
“I am very happy for Stephanie to have received the Chancellor’s award,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She is so deserving and sets such a great example for those around her. She has brought so much to the Binghamton campus and community and we will miss her next year.”
DeLuca is a three-year starter and first-year co-captain for the Bearcats. She currently ranks second on the squad with a .328 batting average and has homered twice in the past four games. Against Siena on April 6, she belted her first career grand slam. Binghamton is currently 13-11 overall and 4-2 in the America East Conference.
In April 2009, DeLuca was inducted into the National College Athlete Honors Society. The following year, she was named to the America East Conference All-Academic Team. DeLuca has also been named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll (minimum 3.5 GPA) every semester she has been at Binghamton.
Besides her role with the softball team, DeLuca has been extensively involved around the Binghamton campus. As a biology major, she is the current Academic Vice President for the Neuroscience Club. In the athletic department, she has been involved in both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Student-Athlete Leadership Institute (SALI) since her freshman year.
Furthermore, DeLuca has been actively involved in the greater Binghamton community during her undergraduate career. She helped organize the softball team’s effort in the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk the past two years. In the fall of 2010, the softball team was the third highest group to take part in the walk, in terms of the amount of money it raised for the cause. DeLuca has also helped out with the Send Santa to the Troop organization, the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, the Letters to a Fallen Hero organization, the St. Jude’s Research Hospital Fundraiser and the CHOW Food Drive.
Since her freshman year, DeLuca has been both a math and science tutor for high school students in the local Binghamton area. In addition, she was a Softball Instructor for the Diamond Dolls U-12 Softball Team during the past winter.
