ITHACA, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling produced eight placewinners and finished a strong third out of 24 teams at the 2014 New York State Intercollegiate Championship, hosted by Cornell at the Newman Arena. The Big Red won the team title with 207 points, followed by Hofstra (157), Binghamton (139), Army (136.5) and Columbia (134) in the top five.

Junior heavyweight Tyler Deuel led the charge with an individual crown. Deuel went 4-0 with two pins and two technical falls. Deuel posted a 15-0 tech fall over an opponent from Buffalo in the quarterfinals and rolled to a 21-6 tech fall over former Bearcat and current Cortland heavyweight Lance Moore in the semifinals. In the final, Deuel pinned his foe from Niagara CC in 5:36. He is 8-3 this season.

Binghamton also had three wrestlers take third place: freshman 133-pound Nick Tighe, junior 184-pound Caleb Wallace and senior 197-pound Cody Reed. Tighe went 5-1 with a pin, lifting his overall season record to 13-5. He lost in the quarterfinals before rattling off four straight wins in the backdraw. Wallace went 4-1 with two pins and a major decision. He advanced to the semifinals and then his last two consolation matches to grab third. Reed also went 4-1 with a major decision.

Junior 149-pound Joe Bonaldi, junior 125-pound David White and redshirt freshman Dylan Caruana (141 lbs.) each placed fourth. White lost 4-0 to the top-seed and eventual champion, Jamie Franco, in the semifinals, and then gave a medical forfeit in the third-place bout. He and Bonaldi each went 3-1 in the tournament. Caruana continued to impress with five wins - three by pin and another by tech fall. He lost in the quarterfinals before rattling off three straight wins in the backdraw.

Binghamton heads to Hudson Valley CC in Troy next Saturday to compete in the Journeymen Duals. There, BU will face North Carolina, NC State and George Mason.
