VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton men’s basketball freshman Ben Dickinson has been selected as the America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Dickinson, a 6-foot-9 forward, becomes the first BU freshman to receive the weekly honor since the 2009-10 season.
He enjoyed a stellar collegiate debut, pouring in a game-high 27 points (7-of-13 FG, 11-of-14 FT), including 15 in the second half when the Bearcats were mounting a charge against Colgate. Dickinson set a program record for points scored by a freshman in a collegiate debut. After a strong preseason, he earned the start against Colgate and played a team-high 38 minutes. Dickinson also contributed a game-high three steals and a game-high six offensive rebounds (seven total). He drilled pair of three-pointers including one from the top of key with 1:25 that cut the team’s deficit to five.
Dickinson’s 27 points were the most of any America East player during the week, as were his six offensive boards. His point total more than doubled the previous team record for scoring in a collegiate debut, shared by Troy Hailey (12 vs. St. Mary’s, Calif., Nov. 21, 2003) and Joel Casseus (12 vs. Lafayette, Nov. 23, 2002). Dickinson’s total also eclipsed the record for “Most points in a game by a freshman,” previously shared by Dylan Talley (25 vs. UMBC, Feb. 21, 2010) and Lazar Trifunovic (25 vs. Alcorn State, Dec. 29, 2006).
“Ben’s maturity is not his age ... it’s his game,” third-year head coach Mark Macon said after the game. “He understands how to play the game and we knew he could do that.”
Dickinson and the Bearcats face Cornell Monday night at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena.
