Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Being an All-American is a great accomplishment for any college athlete.
But how about earning multiple All-American honors, in the same school year?
That’s exactly what Binghamton University runner Erik van Ingen did.
And why he’s our sports overtime college athlete of the year.
It was a banner year for Binghamton University senior and Marathon native Erik van Ingen.
First he earned All-American in the indoor mile.
He was also named the America East’s Most Outstanding Men’s Indoor Track Athlete as well as the Northeast Region men’s indoor track athlete of the year.
His success brought his coach to tears.
“I was happy no doubt but at the same time, I wasn’t shell shocked or anything I guess. Going in, my goal was to finish where my seed was or ahead of that. I was able to do that so statistically, on paper, I performed as I should have,” he says.
But that wasn’t all.
Later in the year, van Ingen earned his second All-American honors in one school year.
This time he received the honor in the outdoor 1500.
“Before this year ‘almost’ was a word I’d use to describe my career. It was getting to the point where it was very frustrating even though I knew what I was capable of,” he said.
