VESTAL, N.Y.—Former BU pitching ace Murphy Smith has earned another honor as he continues his rise in the professional baseball ranks. For the second straight season, Smith has been selected as an all-star at the Double-A level. He will play in the 77th Annual Texas League All-Star Game, held at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Ark., on June 25.
Smith (5-7, 2.70) leads the Midland RockHounds in wins, WHIP (1.20) and ERA and is second in strikeouts (50). He ranks fifth in the Texas League in ERA and has trimmed that number down to 2.19 as a starter.
He was named Texas League Pitcher of the Week on June 4 for his performance in a pair of starts. Despite splitting decisions, he allowed just one run in 14 innings of work.
The former BU ace and 2009 America East Pitcher of the Year was selected by Oakland in the 13th round of the 2009 draft. Smith is in his second year at the Double-A level and has anchored the RockHounds rotation so far in 2013.
