VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore Jesse Garn and senior Jessica Hennig will compete at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Meet, which will be held May 23-25 at North Carolina A&T. The Bearcat duo qualified the meet by being ranked in the top 48 in the East Region in their respective events during the current outdoor campaign.
Garn, who qualified in the 800 last year, is ranked No. 26 in the men’s 1.500 this spring. His top time of 3:44.76 came when he won the America East title on May 5.
Hennig, meanwhile, is ranked No. 46 in the women’s 400. Her top time of 54.35 also came at the America East Championships on May 5, where she was the runner up.
“We are really excited to have Jesse and Jessica at regionals next weekend,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “We knew Jesse was going to get in but Jessica was still up in the air until the final declarations came out.”
The top 12 finishers in each event at the NCAA East Regional Meet will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 5-8 at the University of Oregon. Also advancing to the NCAA Championships will be the top 12 finishers from the West Regional Meet, which will also be held May 23-25 at the University of Texas.
There will be two rounds of each event at the NCAA East Regional Meet. The preliminaries of the men’s 1,500 are May 23 at 6 p.m. The finals, meanwhile, take place May 25 at 6:45 p.m. The women’s 400 preliminaries are May 23 at 7:20 p.m. with the finals taking place the following day at 6 p.m.
“Jesse has a good shot at making it to the NCAA Championships while Jessica will try to improve her school record and break 54 seconds,” Thompson said.
At the 2012 East Regional Meet, Garn had the seventh-fastest time in the 800 preliminaries (1:48.85) but dipped to 23rd in the finals (1:51.60). Earlier that season, he was third in the 1,500 at the America East Outdoor Championships.
Garn’s appearance marks the third straight year the Bearcat men’s program will have an entry in the 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Erik van Ingen, advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships in the same event the previous two years.
Hennig continues her prolific career with her first trip to the NCAA East Regional Meet. She has won three conference indoor titles in the 400 during her career and also captured the individual title at the 2012 America East Outdoor Meet.
This past weekend at the ECAC Championships, Hennig joined with juniors Kathleen Klein and Erika Kisel and sophomore Ivory Taussig to smash the Binghamton program’s 4x400 record. Their time of 3:44.26 shaved a full three seconds off the previous 2007 mark of 3:47.47.
NOTE: Hennig’s time of 54.35 at the America East Outdoor Championships is the current school record.
