VESTAL, N.Y.—Freshman Jesse Garn has been named the America East Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. He earns the honor by virtue of his record-setting performance at this weekend’s Bucknell Outdoor Challenge.
Garn won the 800 in a school-record time of 1:49.17. It is the fastest time clocked by an America East Conference runner this outdoor season and eclipses the school record of 1:49.80 set by senior teammate Erik van Ingen last year. van Ingen was second behind Garn on Saturday with a time of 1:49.18.
“I’m so happy to see Jesse’s hard work pay off,” Binghamton assistant track coach Annette Acuff said. “He is a special talent and this performance created a new vision for him.”
As of Sunday, Garn’s time is the 13th-fastest mark recorded in the NCAA East Region. The top 48 runners in each event will advance to the NCAA East Regional Championships, which will be held May 24-26 at the University of North Florida. van Ingen’s mark represents the 14th-fastest effort.
After struggling through and injury-plagued cross country season, Garn bounced back with a solid performance during the ensuing indoor track season. He earned all-conference honors as a member of the winning distance medley relay team at the America East Championships in February. He was also sixth overall in the mile at that meet with a time of time of 4:10.40. Two weeks later, he was seventh at the IC4A Championships in the mile with a time of 4:09.92.
Binghamton is in action this weekend at the Upstate Challenge at the University of Buffalo. Garn and several of the top distance runners, however, will head to the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University.
