GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore middle distance runner Jesse Garn placed 13th overall in the final round of the men’s 1,500 at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening. The three-day event is being hosted by North Carolina A&T.
Running in the faster of the two heats, Garn was eighth with a season-best time of 3:43.98. The top five finishers in each of the two heats, plus the next two fastest times advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held at Oregon June 5-8. With the fastest time in the second heat only being 3:47.72, the sixth and seventh-place finishers from Garn’s heat got the final two spots for the NCAA.
The overall first-place finisher was Jeremy Rae of Notre Dame, who clocked a time of 3:39.92. The seventh-place time of 3:42.91 was turned in by Isaac Wendland of Liberty. Of the 12 runners who advanced to the NCAA Championships, only two of them were underclassman.
Garn had been seeded 19th coming into the meet.
This marks the second consecutive year Garn has advanced to the finals of an event at the NCAA East Regional Meet. Last year, he posted the seventh-fastest preliminary time in the men’s 800 but settled for 23rd place in the finals.
