Golf Hosts Second Annual Binghamton Collegiate Invitational

Junior Jack Sedgewick

Apalachin, N.Y.—Binghamton University golf will be the home team this weekend as they get set to host their second annual Binghamton Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and Monday at the Links at Hiawatha Landing. The Bearcats are one of 13 teams competing in Apalachin, complete with 71 student-athletes in action over the course of the 36-hole event. BU hosted the very same tournament a season ago, finishing 5th out of 16 schools.

Binghamton’s home course is a challenging links style setup that spans just over 7,100 yards at the championship tees. Conveniently just 15 miles west of Binghamton, the Links at Hiawatha Landing is a par 72 that was rated the third best public access golf course in New York State by Golfweek magazine in 2008.

In 2012, Laval University was victorious at the first-ever Binghamton Collegiate, winning by 12 shots over Saint Peter’s College and Hofstra. Laval is in the tournament field once again, as is Hofstra who shot a 36-hole team total of 598. Binghamton was 14 shots off the leaders with a two-day score of 600, but the highlight of their tournament was the runner-up finish from now-senior Bryce Edmister. Edmister was even par for the tournament (144), four shots off individual medalist Ujo Coussaud of Laval.

So far in 2013, the Bearcats have looked sharp in their opening three tournaments. BU has recorded three top-5 team finishes, including a victory at the Colgate Invtiational back on Sept. 8. In their last outing, Binghamton fell just short of capturing their fifth straight win at Cornell, sliding to 5th at tournament’s end. Senior Bryce Edmister turned in the team’s best performance once again, tallying a 218 (+5). Edmister has three top-5 individual finishes in 2013, and has an impressive team-leading scoring average of 71.7.

Freshman Kyle Wambold has also been a key factor for Binghamton’s early success, grabbing a pair of top-10 finishes to begin his first collegiate season. Wambold is second on the squad with a scoring average of 73.8 and has shot three rounds of under-par. Junior Josh Holling has a top-10 finish this season, that came in Binghamton’s win at Colgate last month. He will be joined by classmates Jack Sedgewick and Stephen Mincone in the Bearcats lineup this weekend.

Play at the Links at Hiawatha Landing will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, with BU teeing off from 9:54 through 10:30. All 13 teams will play 18 holes on Sunday and then wrap things up with the final round on Monday. Final round tee times will be announced after first round action, and play will begin at 8:30 a.m. from Apalachin.
