Huntingdon Valley, PA—The Bearcats made a leap up in the team standings Sunday afternoon at the Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational, finishing in third place after starting the day in seventh. With a team total of 301 at the par 70 Philmont Country Club, BU finished a mere three strokes back of tournament champs Hartford.
Junior Bryce Edmister tallied yet another 73 on Sunday, finishing runner-up for the second consecutive week. In a field of 98 players, Edmister came just one stroke shy of tying Temple’s Brandon Matthews who had the tournament’s low round today at 69 (-1). Playing a consistent final round complete with 11 pars, Edmister rounded out his round with a birdie on the short 135 yard par 3 eighth hole. The lefty has had an excellent fall resume in 2012, finishing in the top-10 four times.
After a challenging start on the back-nine 40 (+5), sophomore Josh Holling worked his way into a top-10 finish by birdying both eight and nine for a 75 Sunday. Holling played the weekend with a two-day total of 151, tying just one other competitor at 10th position. Much like Edmister, he has done a lot of damage this fall with four top-10 finishes and a pair of top-5 places.
Fellow sophomore Jack Sedgewick put up a strong round Sunday, helping the Bearcats register their fourth top-5 team finish of the season. Sedgewick played the day at seven-over par, collecting 10 pars and a pair of birdies, including the 18th and final hole of the day on number nine (par 5, 569 yards). He secured a 35th place finish at day’s end.
Freshman Brandon Smith’s 76 was the final score tallied towards Binghamton’s 301, which was the second best round Sunday, only behind Hartford’s 291.
BU hits the road for San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 22 to play in the Bruce Memorial Tournament hosted by Division II member St. Mary’s. This tournament will be a tune up for the Bearcats who will play their rounds at the Dominion Country Club, host site of the 2013 America Sky Championship.
